I was taking Topaz Clarity for a free test drive, looking at images I cannot re-scan to see if they might be improved. This image from a lab-scanned roll of APS film is from a rainy day bus ride in Fukuoka, Japan (circa 1998). We were surprised to find ourselves passing a group readying for a festival. A group of people wearing Fundoshi breechcloths always draws attention. I recall being surprised to see young girls dressed similarly and participating. A Chinese friend explained, "In China, maybe here too, boys and girls are treated the same. Until (age) twelve there is no difference."
Here, Clarity has enhanced the view through the window that previously was washed out by inadvertently fired flash. It isn't a great shot, but I must admit Topaz brought this memory back to life.

「美は残酷で、おっかないもんだぜ」とドストエフスキーは書いた。おそらく本音だろう。
「顔は成形外科手術で変えることができる。現在の美容外科は、歯医者並みの気安さだ」と某書に書いてあった。
顔はオリジナルが消えつつある。造りものの顔でも、個人が満足すれいいじゃないか、という一般説も成り立つ。
では、脚はどうか。知る範囲では、脚の美容形成外科手術は、存在しないようだ。おそらく、これからも無理だろう。
もちろん先天後天の障害除去や歩行機能回復の手術は、当然に可能である。
美しい脚を、外科的手術で作ろうとしても、部位の大きさ、微妙なラインの変化、大きな負荷のかかる運動能力その他の要因で、困難であろう。脚は自然で天然な、その人固有の肉体的価値である。

While walking past a park bench I noticed someone had spilled several glass beads, each a tiny fortune-teller's crystal ball, smashing some to shards.
Utata's Weekend Project: "Heart Songs" (May 19th - June 2nd) asks for compositions built around a song/title. There are several options for "crystal ball" depending on your mood: One by Styx, or Keane, or Pink, or Peter Tosh. I was happy to discover one by the English band Felt. I missed them completely in their heyday and now have the pleasure of digging through a deep catalog of interesting tracks.

Utata's Iron Photographer Challenge 285 wants:
1. something which is entirely a primary colour (yellow)
2. something which is entirely a secondary colour (orangish)
3. Lens flare (stopped down to make a star)
Peeling paint, on a table near the lake, was photographed on a cloudy day. Lightening the table while leaving the water dark emphasized the boundary between textures.
Like fireflies flickering through the night
a momentary blaze sets her face alight.
Lost in the flow and feeling the heat
it's easy to glide to that summer beat.

A dusting of snow made the morning walk to school more exciting. Slow shutter speed was used to accentuate falling snow and blur people's faces. At this resolution blurry faces seem more attractive than almost sharp, and the subjects retain privacy from face-scanning image searches.
Utata's Big summer project 2014 invites us to take photos with a mobile device (phone, tablet). My interpretation is to do more with less, along the lines of DigitalRev's Pro photographer, Cheap camera challenge. This day I had a 0.3 MP cell phone camera to attempt a portrait.
Strategy:
Low MP photo is easier to view if there are fewer simple elements to interpret.

This image was used as an example introducing Utata's weekend project People, Unposed (July 22nd- Aug 4th 2017) so I marked it as my archival entry.
Robert Frost no doubt would have parked and pondered, "why is this swampy spot at the top of a hill?" Or, possibly, "Why have these trees at the top of a hill drowned?"
This brings to mind Inspector Grandpierre in the film Charade, who began an investigation saying, "A man drowned in his bed -- impossible!"

Shadow and Substance
(New paintings and prints)
This new body of work was begun in the wake of my last exhibition of prints. In almost every respect they could not be more different. These landscapes are not populated, barely cultivated and look back to older traditions of British landscape painting. My painting and print of Waterstock done in October was really the beginning of the series, I didn't really have any definite intention of starting a new series so soon after "Journeying."
Journeying (exhibited in October 2007) featured the architecture and people of my old hometown Reading. I felt the need to do revisit other aspects of my art and attempt some more "experimental art" with an allied return to a more traditional type of oil painting; a type I've not attempted for thirty years.
The compositions are built up mainly of blocks of horizontal lines with a distant hill or treeline , or focal point, there are large areas of negative indeterminate space. The colours are earthy and naturalistic, unlike the more Fauve "Waterstock" The surfaces are built of heavy texture contrasted with lighter areas of glazed oil or varnished surfaces. They conciously mimick C19 painters like Corot, Constable Daubigny and of course Millais.
The current exhibition of Millais' work at Tate Britain has had a profound influence upon me. Particularly his late, haunting and bleak, Scottish landscapes; twelve of which were shown in the final gallery being assembled for the first time since 1898. I re-visited many of the actual locations in Scotland in November; see my Perthshire set. I took many photographs and made a number of oil pastel studies whilst staying at Rattray. Since my return I've begun about 25 small scale oils using a similar tonality to Millais palette , the resulting works are influenced by photography, Scotland and Millais' landscape painting. In these works I'm attempting to explore the relationship between photograhy and painting without attempting to paint "photo-relaistic" paintings. I have used different calligraphic marks, glazes and saturated colours built up in layers to push towards something different and new, landscapes (so far without) figurative content. These works are an attempt to re-familiarise myself with landscape painting, to express emotion and to challenge myself technically without the aid of a Mac or computer graphic program, I may eventually then rework these paintings into prints at some point.
This series is very much work in progress, as yet nothing is clarified or finished, as with "Journeying" Exhibition notes I hope to show you something of my working process.
By the way I've called the title of this series "Shadow and Substance" which is the title of a book W. Eugene Smith: Shadow and Substance : The Life and Work of an American Photographer it seemed to sum up what these works were about from my point of view as I didn't want things linked to specific locations as in Journeying, although these landscape is in many cases from specific places in Perthshire, notably Rattray and Tayside.

Utata's weekend project is organized around science fiction.
This image was generated using the in camera multiple exposure function, which requires the second image to be added within one minute of the first or it "forgets". A view of the beach was combined with a macro shot of paint peeling from a nearby picnic table. Adjusting the color palette with Topaz Restyle (bronze desert preset, 70% normal blending mode) strengthened the otherwise washed out figure
