I normally don't see these guys.

There are still a few warm days for outdoor activity.

Utata Stays Home project: Portrait

There were several times when I had the feeling, "you're not from around here." As a long-haired grad student, who remembers geriatric drivers audibly flicking the automatic door lock as I pass in the crosswalk. As a customer in a Japanese shop when a passing yongster stopped in surprise to point and exclaim, "gaijin da!" As a tourist in Romania when a money changer refused to work within the official exchange booth and, instead, tried to fool me with sleight of hand, substituting a worthless stack of bills. I get that feeling more frequently, now, as many turn a resentful eye on passers by, particularly those wearing a mask, as though assessing a threat.

The scars ... are intentional.

The colors are beautiful.

The pain was delectible.

In stillness and in movement,

The flash of color and line

Captures the eye and

Raises questions unasked.

Autumn scenes and DXO filmpack's cross processing go together nicely.

The six-year-old 69th anniversary shirt looms large in this scene. I used the back of one in this image:

www.flickr.com/photos/7726011@N07/50255644047/

Processing note: Contrast enhanced with DXO filmpack (AGFA Scala preset) yellow filter and a homemade Daidoish adjustment (exposure, contrast, and clear-view increased; blacks increased and whites decreased in curves to clip blacks and highlights).

Experiments in contrast management.

This is cropped from TW 551: Eye contact. I was interested in this part of the image but wanted to manipulate features in both bright light and shadows. Iterations through Topaz Clarity (contrast enhancement), Silver Efex pro (BW conversion), and Topaz Restyle (tone management) got me to a place inaccessible via a Lightroom grad filter and contrast adjustment.

This image reminded me of the nebulously defined aesthetic of Felt Life before its founder and several admins abandoned the group and, in many cases, Flickr. There are now more than 362,000 images in the pool - many of them simply dumped. But if you head back to circa 2007 images (well past page 2900) you can have a glimpse of what was intended.

Utata's weekend project "Night" has me perusing old images for items of interest. This view from a Ferris wheel, of the 2012 Amelia Earhart festival midway, was uploaded then I forgot to make it public.

Technical trivia Distortion was corrected (Olympus Master) then contrast was enhanced using Jeff Masamori's quick method (generate a copy, equalize histogram, then blend with the original).

Please press "L" to view this in the light box.

This composite is from a sequence of photos taken with moving subjects (passing school bus, swaying trees) and a nearly stationary camera, registered on stationary background elements (the road), then combined for a subtractive filter Harris shutter effect (HSE).

Details

This modified Harris Shutter Effect image generates colored "ghosts" on a black background. Displaced background elements are emphasized as ghosts while indistinguishable features turn black.

Relativity - what you see depends on your frame of reference.

Background

A stationary camera shows a static background with a subject changing position in successive exposures. Muybridge's motion studies, in contrast, simulate a moving camera and show an effectively stationary subject against a moving background. These may be displayed as a polyptych or combined into multiple exposures on a single frame. This is a Harris shutter effect variant, turning the moving elements into brightly colored ghosts. The 'normal' multiple exposure is here.

Details

This modified Harris Shutter Effect image generates colored "ghosts" on a black background. Things that move and other differences between three more-or-less sequential photos are emphasized while static features turn black. For this project I warped/scaled the images to maximize biker congruency, allowing the background to lose registration.

Utata's weekend project is Panta rhei (everything flows).

On a dreary, rainy day my gaze was focused on the umbrella and the path. Everyone seems in a hurry to reach a dry place and avoid eye contact to get there faster. I put my camera perpendicular to watch people flow past.

Utata's weekend project is Panta rhei (everything flows).

A few years ago I rediscovered panning shots through Ryo Hirosawa's views of his world: a cyclist, a moped, and a van. Focusing on the vehicle makes it seem the world flows by.

Technical trivia

This meager homage uses a camera with no meaningful manual controls, at maximum zoom and minimum aperture for slow shutter speed. B&W conversion with Google's Nik collection (Silver Efex Pro preset: Full dynamic, harsh) brought out details in the trees.

Utata's summer project 2015 invites breaking rules of composition. This image of morning dew on a spider web is rather cluttered.

Project category:

Discomposure—the rule of thirds? straight horizons? uncluttered backgrounds? Forget about it.

Technical Trivia

Three frames taken hand-held were registered before abstracting red, green, and blue channels from sequential images. Slow shutter speed (1/15 s) was used to enhance blur in nearby vehicles. One frame (the green one) was slightly blurred by camera shake with little ill effect on overall clarity. The color layers recombined to generate this image. Color enhancement involved several steps outlined in (Harris shutter effect) Grizzly Classic hurdler.
