Like a whisper in the night
her song moves softly through the leaves.
A single solitary light
is all that she needs
to bring our focus on her flight
from the square to the trees.

Winter melts into Spring,
Spring heats up into Summer,
and I abide.
Life's ebb and flow
will pass around me
or sweep me along.
And yet, I abide.

The Walker Art Center hosted an exhibition of David Hockney paintings, through which a guard restlessly strolled, here towards the camera. Images were registered/scaled on the moving subject then combined.

Subtractive filter Harris shutter effect (subtractive filter HSE, SFHSE) constructed from three sequential images of traffic on highway 36, during a snow storm.
Details
This modified Harris Shutter Effect image generates colored "ghosts" on a black background. Things that move and other differences between three more-or-less sequential photos are emphasized while static features turn black. Imperfect registration leaves a faint outline of background details. Blowing snow provides 'noise' against dark features like the tree line, making them appear as a collection of streaks on close inspection.

The 3-position aperture on this not-fully-manual camera starts usefully bright when wide (f2.0, 2.8, 8.0) and quickly dims when zoomed (f 4.9, 6.3,18.0). On dark, dull days like this one it is necessary to either be close or think of slowing things down to exploit blur (ISO 100, f 5.6, camera determined 1/30s).
Gouache, pencil and charcoal on paper. The photo here was burnt out in places, so as I often place what I don't see from observation in it rather freed me to work in a new way. The hat is a lovely feature and with hindsight the most appealing pattern in this gouache.

His soft voice spanning time
and distance,
Moments of inspiration
And quiet admiration.
A soft rasp adds texture
Lined by a light tension
Of what brought it.
Years ago, this didn’t happen,
Life. Work. Other excuses.
Lost opportunities.
Now time is short. Life, and Work
Are topics, not excuses
In conversations with my father.

The overarching trees seem rather inviting on a hazy spring morning. The long abandoned hopper cars begin to disappear into the green. Before the leaves come out it seemed rather desolate.

For Utata's Thursday Walk 864 I set out with the intention of making various Harris Shutter Effect images. This is a bus stop, viewed through a safety tunnel at a construction site, that was photographed while the camera moved (me walking). Three successive images were registered on the stationary person before generating a stacked image (integration Signal to Noise Reduction; SNR):

The subtractive filter Harris Shutter Effect (HSE) image was also prepared:
www.flickr.com/photos/7726011@N07/52497107954/in/photostr...
A mask shaped like the end of the tunnel was made then blurred before using it to combine the two images. This restored structure to a part of the image that was largely void after the subtractive filter.
It's not often you find a restored Corvair station wagon puttering by. Only the obscured pickup and asphalt road suggest this is a modern image. Fun fact: the engine is in the rear, under the cargo area floor, thereby necessitating the big air intakes on the side.
Processing note: Bleach bypass simulated by combining color image (DXO photolab deep prime NR, window glare mitigated by local application of clearview) with BW (Silver EFX pro, high structure, smooth setting) at 50% normal blending mode.
The bluish sky was achieved by hue rotation in Viveza2. Jason Odell has a page describing many ways to accomplish the same thing:

The near and far elements had me humming Old McDonald...
1. A growing thing far away (small in frame)
2. The same thing close up (large in frame)
3. A diptych (asymmetric, in this case)
I was interested in the corroding paint can advertisement. The right image meters this better, but the left frames it better.

1980-s era QL17-GIII with stuck shutter and stuck timer serviced by Alex Bonarski (rangefindercamera on ebay). Within three weeks he had fully CLAed (including timer cleaning and battery update) , replaced a defective lens element (for which he had spares to sell) and returned the camera with a one year warranty. Highly recommended!
Utata's Iron photographer challenge 310 requests compositions with:
1. Something with wheels
2. Footwear
3. Grain or Noise (wheat)
(Press 'L' to view in lightbox)
This composite is from a sequence of photos taken with a moving subject and a stationary camera, registered (more or less) on the engine front, then combined for a subtractive filter Harris shutter effect (HSE).

The Detroit airport has an underground tunnel with the most unsettling light show I have ever experienced. A slow shutter speed was used to blur moving objects.
I had initially thought of doing this in B&W but the violet proves important for focusing attention on the distant person while the blue deemphasizes the foreground.

Utata's iron photographer 346 asks for photos with:
1) something round(ish) (some faces seem round to me)
2) something brightly colored
3) blurry
Moving camera blur was obtained with a very slow shutter speed and wait-then-drag camera movement.

I found this image, contrasting a soft circle with harsh angular and linear elements, while porsuing Utata's Iron Photographer challenge #274:
1. Something Fishy (fishing bobber or colloquial cork)
2. Something Fragile (sitting in a bucket of broken glass)
3. Minimalist (not this image, anyway)
Serendipity: This image appeared in Utata's pool shortly after Hyla Levy's picnic tables, which evokes similar abstract structure.
I snapped this as we boogied past the Barge coffee house.
