Background
A stationary camera shows a static background with a subject changing position in successive exposures. Muybridge's motion studies, in contrast, simulate a moving camera and show an effectively stationary subject against a moving background. These may be displayed as a polyptych or combined into multiple exposures on a single frame.
The goal was to capture the motion of the scene: contestants moving around the stage with a rapidly changing yo-yo. This solution selected three images with approximately the same facial orientation then oriented them for maximal facial congruity before stacking. This has the effect of making the face clear while the remainder of the image becomes a blur of overlapped scenes. It brought to mind the focus of the competitors, blocking out the noisy distractions of the bustling venue.

A moving camera (me, walking) introduced parallax between successive images. Warping to align the seated couple caused them to be dark while other objects became colorful (due to poor registration in those regions).

I am working through the free trial of DXO Photolab 2017, looking at archived images. Filmpack 3 has a few more simulated films, allowing quick and pleasing contrast enhancement. The Adox CMS20 preset is extremely dark but, on increasing exposure by 1ev, allows separation of low and midtones while brightening highlights acceptably.
A piece in a series called 'Art Dealer." Small collages in baggies, which are intended to be sold at parties for $20 a piece.

I was observing pigeons through my camera when a youngster unexpectedly dashed through the frame, scattering them.

Photographed in available light, using automatic white balance. The intent was to capture motion, rather than test the limits of image stabilization. This 100% zoomed image was taken from the same vantage as the other 22.

I like the look of old Polaroid rollfilm images. I constructed this image from a modern shot of a hiking trip. I used the border and defects (from uneven spreading the developer) from a found Polaroid image. As framed, the shot looked much like an original Polaroid snapshot of a group traversing the upper rim of Valea Cerbului (The Cerbului Valley). I hated to clip two remaining hikers, so I left them walking into the frame. (Europe)

This 2019 image of a person walking past the varsity theater suddenly seems nostalgic. On the Marquee is "Charlie Doesn't Surf," a Minneapolis based punk trio. Their bandcamp page offers one song recorded during this performance: Travis - Live at the Varsity.

Things that move and other differences between three more-or-less sequential photos are emphasized while static features turn black. Passing shadows, from (relatively moving) trees, become colorful abstract patterns on the sidewalk.

This composite is from a sequence of photos taken at a Walker art center. I imagined viewing an installation through the 'ghosts' of passing people, as generated by the Harris shutter effect, might express the liminal experience of people interacting with the art.

Tamagawa University Taiko and Dance corps (Tamagawa Taiko) performance 4/14/2014 at Ursinus College. Women are permitted to play a small variety of drums while appearing in feminine garb. Larger set pieces with players dressed in traditionally masculine costume can have women participating, but they are not given the same prominence as the males (no solos to attract attention, not positioned in most visible front rank, not providing the occasional yell that punctuates the physical routine).
I was revisiting older images during a free trial of Topaz clarity and found this portrait. I neglected to make it public but Flickr's camera roll helped me discover and remedy that. The "portrait 1" preset in clarity was used to enhance contrast.

Thursday morning began rainy and dreary. A camera wrapped in a plastic bag allowed soggy photos.
You could take your raincoat but, no, get a ride home instead.
A Kodak sport 800 disposable camera was employed on a rainy day. Despite the high ISO the dim light made most images severely underexposed.

Technical trivia
A polarizing filter was used.
The original image had distracting yellow railings and trash cans, causing the eye to wander around. The Polaroid 669 preset in DXO filmpack 3 reduced this problem and made it more dramatic. (Europe)
This leafy twig was the only foreground object near the creek bend. The faint highlight near the water seems to result from pulling back an overexposed image.

Contrast enhanced by partial palette replacement (Topaz Restyle) using a cross-processed image I admire as a model.
One day in Washington, D.C., I photographed examples of protests/activism that I came across. I saw a well-funded interest group at work, No-Nukes folks commemorating terrorism, an agenda resembling hate speech, and foreign nationals peacefully protesting. For context, the prominent issue was healthcare reform and the ongoing wars were largely ignored. On one entertainment channel minor factions gained prominent airplay for ideas ranging from traditional to ridiculous, but supporters were not evident today.
The largest and noisiest demonstration had nothing to do with any issue visible on TV or in newspapers - human rights in Egypt.
I took a short walk uptown after the largest gatherings had dispersed. I am interested in seeing these artworks in context, before the plywood is removed.
I took several frames of scooter riders in Dinkytown.

I thought the colors of a green stone would go nicely with red tomatoes, then (re-)discovered the problems of imaging a shiny object.

This is the first white bee I've seen up close. It seems these mining bees, from the genus Andrena, are widespread and common but solitary. This fellow was nibbling pollen and quite unconcerned with the close approach of my camera.

The camera and the artist (set) about the relationship between photographic images and those painted. I hope to use examples from my own practice where photography has been used in both photo-realistic work as well as illustration and other art-forms.
I have used a number of artists whose work I have studied and look at the way photography informed and influenced their visual expression.
As I have scanned a lot of my old work I'm well aware that photography has played and still plays a significant role for me as an artist, indeed in recent years these two practices have overlapped and are no longer distinct paths.
There is a path I regularly walk at the Audubon sanctuary in Oaks, PA, USA. My gaze is normally on the path, to watch my footing, so much of the undergrowth went unnoticed for quite a while. Only after seeing a bloom of cinnabar red chanterelles did I take a closer look. Several species were visible in only a 60 meter stretch through the forest and included polypores (shelf like fungi), cup-like fungi, puffballs, coral fungi and several other species. There was also a slime mold and a parasitic flowering plant which has no chlorophyll.
These orange fellows, ranging from 1cm to only a few cm in height, appear to be cinnabar-red chanterelles (Cantharellus cinnabarinus). But don't stake your life on that assignment. This image is slightly overexposed - caps are a vibrant orange with no white.
The Walker Art Center has an installation by Allora & Calzadilla called "Chalk". A gallery was transformed into a large blackboard with human sized pieces of chalk for guests to graphically transform the space as they wish.

All the Halloween decor in the neighborhood has me thinking along grotesque lines.

This is Geri's first tat. She's starting with a small piece in the center of her back which will be expanded a section at a time by Hippie. Geri's using her original art work which Hippie will ink using carbon transfer to her skin.

(Gateway Diner 1939-2006)
The Gateway Diner was exemplary of the intimate art deco style structures built by the Fodero Dining Car Co. A business this size relies more on the passion of the owner than business savvy. Doug of Al's Breakfast in Minneapolis, a fourteen seat operation with a line of customers often stretching out the door, once said to me (Me! an anonymous customer), "I told my wife I'll never get rich doing this, but I will always be doing what I enjoy. Good thing she's got a job [too]." The Gateway diner was run for the last quarter century of business by Joe Phillips. He maintained a loyal customer base that, in later years, turned the parking lot into a classic car show every Tuesday night. But he was approaching 80 near the turn of the century and the workload became a bit much. His grandson took over management, promising to keep it running as long as he lived - nearly a decade longer. You can read more in the mini biographies published posthumously in the local paper and on the American Roadside website.
The listing in the Diner directory still shows a tiny photo from its operational era.
Gouache and charcoal on paper
Following my trip to Aix en Provence last month (February 2010). Have made a series of charcoal/ink and gouache studies after a number of Cezanne's paintings. I have not paid note of the colour of these works, which would be a study in itself, rather I've concentrated on the dynamic surfaces and forms. at present I'm working on a series of landscape paintings and hope to incorporate some of these ideas into my own work.
Throughout my life I have made copies after paintings and find they are a great way to stimulate one's own imaginative life and creativity. Once recorded in a digital way further work is also possible.
