Bob was a camera operator in a Naval Swordfish biplane flying over enemy positions and making films for intelligence, no mean task.

A TRIBUTE TO H.A.R. THOMSON, Camera operator British Film Industry.

Bob Thomson September 1910 to July 2003

Bob Thomson was my father in law and I wanted to pay tribute to him and the work he did in the British Film Industry as a camera operator. Bob was born on September 30th 1910 in London and worked as a freelance and was well known in the industry from the fifties to the late seventies. The list I have here is quite extensive and as you can see many of the films are very well known. It stops in 1975 with One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing which I remember Bob being away working on, it was the year I joined the police force and Bob’s daughter Elyse and I were engaged. However, he worked on other films after this and I remember Elyse and I in about 1977 walking up to Bristol Cathedral with our newly born daughter Elizabeth to meet him on the set of The Medusa Touch which starred Richard Burton. We were shown around the set and fed from the film catering van parked on College Green, it was a good experience.

Bob came from a huge East End family and the second world war led him into the Royal Navy. He had already had training in the film industry and had worked as a film camera operator so was quickly commissioned as an RNVR officer and ended up flying very dangerous missions over enemy territory, hanging out over the side of a Swordfish biplane making films of German positions. After the war he went back into the film industry and then met and married Jean, later on baby Elyse arrived on the scene. They led an interesting and exciting life, travelling the world often with Elyse in tow and in later years as a teenager she was lucky enough to visit the sets of some amazing movies and meet the stars.

Bob was not a physically big man but he had a big presence and did not suffer fools lightly, he was a good man to have on your side, full of natural intelligence and easy wit. On a Parkinson show one night we watched Dirk Bogart talking about his life and he recounted a story about when he first went in front of the cameras, having been a stage actor he got it all wrong and by the time lunch break came he thought he had made the wrong move in his career and was despairing. Bob came out front behind the camera and told him he was “Bloody useless.” and then spent the next hour teaching Dirk to act for the camera. On the Parkinson show Dirk recounted this episode in his life and then said, “I expect he’s dead by now.” Bob sent a Christmas card to Dirks home in France a month or so later saying. “I’m not dead you cheeky bugger.” He must have been nearly 80 then and they corresponded from then on.

Bob knew them all and was friends with many. He spoke with great affection about people like the lovely Jack Hawkins, Richard Burton, the crew from the Doctor Films including the marvellous James Robertson-Justice, John Mills, Hayley Mills, Kenneth Moore, Donald Sinden, Stanley Baker, the Carry On crowd…. The list was endless and many of these stars of the screen were regular correspondents. He travelled the world and was an incredible source of fascinating stories about the industry. One I particularly loved was about the set of Where Eagles Dare, one of my absolute favourites with Richard Burton, Richard Wydmark, Clint Eastwood among others. They travelled to Austria for the filming and arrived to one of the warmest winters on record and there was little snow which sort of spoiled things for the script. In desperation they bought every ounce of Epson salts they could find and spread it around the countryside in truck loads and very effective snow it made. The only trouble was that for about two weeks, everyone in the area had the trots as it had dissolved and got into the water system!

Bob died suddenly of a heart attack in July 2003 while shopping with Jean in a supermarket in Taunton. I think it was an ok way to go for him, he was on his feet doing something most 92 year olds would struggle with. He was an incredibly kind man and loved his family, my son and daughter were the lights in his later years. It was a priviledge to have known him and I am glad to be able to share these lovely photographs and make this small tribute to him. I have to thank my daughter and Jean for allowing me to reproduce them here and hopefully some of you out there will be able to add information to that I have provided. I’m sure there will be small bits I’ve got wrong and I will attempt to correct them as the family put me straight.

Desert Hawk is a portable UAV surveillance system which provides aerial video reconnaissance. It has a flight time of approximately one hour, and can fly anywhere within a 10km radius of its ground control station. It has both day and night time (thermal imaging) capability. The equipment can be used for a variety of tasks, such as force protection for convoys and patrols, route clearance, base security, reconnaissance or target tracking.

The operator is able to view and record data in real time and act upon any hostile activity that the UAV encounters.

One of my kids has been working on a DNA strand project. For some reason this just reminds me of the strands (probably because this curbs like dna). It's incredible how efficient our DNA molecules operate.
