Wayne from Vancouver Daily Photo was visiting Seattle today, and we took a ride to the Chinese Room observation deck in historic Smith Tower (which you've seen here and here). This was one of the operators of the cool old elevators with their grilled gates and all brass fixtures.

It's a synthesizer. It's a DAW controller. It's a hardware sequencer.

It has four knobs, a mini synth keyboard, and DAW transport controls. It features eight synthesizer models, eight samplers, and effects; analog audio I/O, microphone, speaker, FM radio, and MP3-encoder; accelerometer, USB 2.0 port, Li-Ion-battery, 1GB of memory, and a 320x160 OLED color display.

And, alas, it's still only a prototype. To be frank, I don't think this is even a functional prototype yet, because, if you look closely at the image, you'll note that the buttons are not fully cut out.

So, it came as no surprise that the good folks at the Teenage Engineering booth kept this device under a glass panel that protected the prototype from too many fingerprints and too much overly-eager fiddling-around. The OLED display did work, however, and a sound-demo was offered via headphones.

Those demo sounds clearly targeted the techno'esque and DJ crowd, and they had a whacky lo-fi charme, but they also promised a very decent synth engine underneath the hood, and I sincerely hope that the Operator-1 will ship eventually.

According to TE, a beta run of 100 pre-release units should be ready within about a year. Til then, you can read up on the Operator-1 on its product page, which also offers a few sound examples.

With the phone mounted on the wall, short people had to stand on tiptoes.

Anyone remember the inside of our wireless cabin, single story next to the control tower? I'm on the ATC circuit where flight plans were transmitted on this circuit and actual time of departure (ATD), was sent to all the other route stations as the wheels of the aircraft left the ground. Notice all the labels indicating circuit names are turned away from the camera - just our contribution to the cold war security. We almost always had interference from Russian wireless stations which operated on the same frequency.

However the wireless operator fraternity were sympathetic to each other, there was more than one occasion when life was threatened, a message had to get through requesting an aircraft for medivac, or taking a mayday from ship grounded on the tip of the island (World Jury), I asked the Russian w/op operator to stop transmitting while I sent an urgent message, HM...HM…HM..de MRQ PSE QRT AS AR seem to stop them giving me QRM (interference from their transmission).

I don’t think the CO liked us talking to our opposite number in Russia, using the ‘Q’ code and international universal abbreviations as well as the military 'Z' code, (which they shouldn't know anything about), you could develop a reasonable conversation with any other w/op, whether or not they could understand the english language!!!

International morse code for 'Emergency Silence' is HM in morse . . . . _ _ sent three times before station identifier, all stations on frequency will always stop transmitting and start listening, even those at war... well cold war anyway.

I and other enthusiasts also operated as VS9OC from the Masirah Radio Shack, the very nicely painted sign depicting a transmitting Antenna Tower and the Callsign were expertly painted by SAC John (or Keith) Taylor.

J/T John Bleazard and I 'found' a 1509 transmitter, John being the expert, installed and maintained it, as well as operating from the same callsign, we used an old HRO receiver for listening on both W/T and R/T reception, see the Radio Shack on John's Link -

About the World Jury - an Extract from

www.rquirk.com/med/244sqn/244news/244newsn04.pdf

Monsoons and shallow waters have brought a virtual graveyard of wrecks around the island. The most spectacular probably being the tanker "World Jury", which ran aground off the southern tip of the island in 1961.

Difficulties with the monsoon and looting plagued the salvage efforts. The vessel eventually broke in two and was abandoned. A near neighbour of mine told me that he worked as catering staff in Masirah in the early fifties. He helped with work on a wreck, and was surprised and delighted to receive a substantial cheque from the salvage authorities!

Local independent Mairs Thistle went into liquidation in September as confirmed at the Traffic Commissioner hearing where the operators license was revoked.

The firm which had been based at Dyce has run into financial difficulty earlier in the year which has led to control pass to the Booth family who also owned Gordon Travel, formerly of Portlethen and now of Peterculter.

The firm was also hit by a major fire in August which destroyed a number of vehicles and led to much of the staff leaving the firm.

The Scottish Traffic Commissioner was unhappy at the way both Mairs Thistle and Gordons Travel were being run by the Booth family and revoked both operators licenses on the 24th September.

This would appear to be the very last photo I took of a Mairs Thistle/Gordons Travel vehicle, Tawe Coachbuilders bodied Mercedes Sprinter PO12 DUU seen operating at Offshore Europe 2013 a few weeks before the license was revoked.

This Cotton Gin is just a few miles from my home. I remember going there as a boy in the early '70's when my family raised cotton. I rode right by it today on my ATV and peeked inside. I was surprised to see that all of the equipment is still there and intact. I asked for and got permission to shoot it. All but the scale operator shots are HDR's.

Using the technique of defect smoothing, researchers planarize tiny particles and pits to render a nearly perfect surface for masks used in extreme ultraviolet lithography, a process developed to produce computer chips that are faster and have more memory.
