A mystery this one. Bedford YMP Plaxton Paramount 3200 C431 RJR was found on an industrial estate in either King's Lynn or Dereham with Crusader Coaches names. The livery belongs to TM Travel and it is known to have spent two years with operators on Merseyside, one of which traded as Crusader but there was a further owner change at the start of 2005 tying in with this view in May of that year so who had it when I saw it in Norfolk? What I do know is that it was new to Marton, Heathrow, as C809 TLF.

Washington, D.C. Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 president George W. Apperson (below ATU symbol) is shown with the executive board of the union circa 1968 in their offices at 100 Indiana Avenue NW, Suite 400.
Apperson led the union through the tumultuous period in May-June 1968 that resulted in the exact fare system that is used in nearly every transit system across the country.
In the early morning hours of May 17, 1968 four teens boarded a G-2 bus at 20th and P Streets NW. Moments later bus operator John Earl Talley lay mortally wounded after he was shot twice in the head.
The killing rocked the city as DC Transit workers began unauthorized strikes ultimately refusing to carry change at night protesting an epidemic of robberies and Talley’s death.
At the time, bus operators carried change for bills and many were holding hundreds of dollars at any given time during their routes.
The protests, along with a similar killing of a bus operator in Baltimore, resulted in an agreement to implement the first exact fare system in the country that was quickly followed by major transit systems throughout the United States.
Talley, known to carry an unauthorized gun to protect him, evidently pulled his weapon as the young men tried to rob him. Talley’s gun was found unfired beside his dying body.
The four youths were quickly arrested. All ended up pleading guilty to robbery in return for dropping the murder charge. Three received probation while the 17-year-old charged with the actual shooting was held until his 18th birthday.
Bus operators at the Bladensburg garage where Talley worked staged a two-hour wildcat in the early morning hours of May 17th that was ended when Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 officials called for a union meeting.
A number of union meetings followed with a strike motion defeated by a narrow vote at a May 23rd meeting. However the union members voted to refuse to work at night for 10 days and the pay the operators who didn’t work their regular salaries in an attempt to settle the issue before calling a full-fledged strike.
The action prompted city officials, religious leaders, the D.C. Transit Company and the union to reach an agreement June 3, 1968 to require exact change with paper script being issued in place of change. Bus token sales outlets were increased dramatically and the plan that company officials said would never work took hold with an accepting public.
The photograph captures the union in a period of transition. The first African American operators were hired in 1955, although several hundred had worked in the maintenance department while streetcars plied the city streets.
The numbers of African American operators were increasing, albeit slowly. The first African American officer in Local 689 was elected in 1970 to a nominal position.
However an explosion in hiring of African American operators from the late 1960s through the mid 1970s and beyond completely transformed the union to a predominantly African American-led organization by 1983.

In an image cropped from a 1961 group photograph of DC Transit operators, William “Pop” Saunders was promoted from the Capital Transit maintenance department to streetcar operator in 1955 under an agreement between the federal government, the Public Utilities Commission, the union and Capital Transit.
Saunders was among the first African Americans to operate streetcars and later converted to bus operator when streetcars were phased out. Prior to his promotion to operator, Saunders worked at the old Central Division near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and V Street NW. Saunders worked in the plow pit located about a block north of the yard and manually changed power on the cars from overhead wire to underground and vice versa.
From bus operator, Saunders moved to the new Metrorail system and became the first train operator.
