Op de Leusderheide werd de Viking Operators Course gehouden. Na deze lessen moesten de groepsleiders een examen afleggen.

Sumlock was a brand of mechanical and electronic calculators widely used in administration and accounts offices. A trained and experienced Sumlock operator could use the machines for rapid addition of large numbers of figures and also perform other calculations that involved subtraction, multiplication and division. This badge appears to depict the Sumlock 912/S used for pre-decimal currency calculations and such badges would have been awarded with a diploma for those who successfully completed the Sumlock-Comptometer training course. The use of Sumlock calculators declined from the 1970’s and became obsolete as their use was superseded digital and computerised technology.

The origins of Sumlock go back with the Bell Punch Company who were established in 1878 as a manufacturer of ticket-punch machines for busses and trams. Bell Punch launched their first Plus Adder mechanical calculator during the late 1930’s and in 1961 launched the world’s first electronic calculators; the ANITA Mk VII and ANITA Mk VIII. Around this time, they merged with the British subsidiary of the Comptometer Corporation of Chicago to form the Sumlock Comptometer Ltd. In 1973, Sumlock-Comptometer was bought over by Rockwell International who three years later would cease manufacture of Sumlock calculators.

Those who successfully completed the course were awarded the Sumlock-Comptometer Diploma and badge.)

This 1993 Leyland DAF 45 was seen parked amongst multiple other horseboxes at Rockrose Equestrian Sports Centre, near East Linton, Scotland. While not always especially interesting, horsebox lorries tend to be considerably old and rare, one example being this 31 year old Leyland. The vehicle is still taxed and in use, and interestingly its V5C logbook was last issued only last July. If we're to presume that date is when its current owner purchased the lorry, it should have a good few years left at work, over three decades after being registered.

Operator: "I'm sorry Ma'am, we had a bit of a mix up and crossed the lines. Unfortunately there may have been a brief moment where the whole world could have heard what the two of you were saying. Sorry for any inconvenience."

The door at the rear of the train was left open, so I poked my camera in to take a shot or two.

Hmm, new zoom means greater distance between camera operator and subject. NOTE TO SELF: Construct cardboard sign that reads I AM TAKING YOUR PHOTO FOR MY BLOG CALLED GOKUROUSAMA. SMILE!
