White Balance on Flash
This is my standard, auto, walking-around setting on my camera. (The programmed, U1 setting on the dial.) Shutter priority at 1/125th because that seems fast enough to “freeze” most action on the trails (more speed is just is thumb flick away) and max aperture because it’s usually dark(er) under the leaf canopy. ISO is on auto (of course). I keep the polarizer on to take the shine off the leaves and —because it’s always shady — I put the white balance on “Flash”. (I like the tones better than “Shade” or “Cloudy”.)
Straight out of the camera. I don’t process my pictures (normally). Hence the JPEGs.

This rock formation is part of the Piedra Lumbre (Spanish, "Shining Rock") Land Grant near Abiquiu, NM, USA. If one could see through this formation, you would see the Pedernal Peak made famous by Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings. I've always found this area of New Mexico to have fascinating geology. The rocks certainly appeared to be "Shining" as the sun set the evening I made this capture.
feb. 1, 2007 - i just got my braces on... i look like a dork but i'm looking forward to having a pretty smile.
This shot was taken last weekend during my brief visit to CA. I woke up to the glow of the morning light and rushed to set up my tripod on the balcony of the bedroom. Normally, I would have avoided the angle to capture the house, but I really liked the reflection off the glass door. I don't think I could ever grow old of waking up to this.
One of the frogs that lives in the little pond behind the visitor center at Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria Virginia (9/12/23).
A special shot because of the sunlight and the shadow Cortez seems to have only one eye.
I just noticed I have reached 20.000 views on my photostream.
I thank you all for your visits.
My one and only Puffin pic from my trip to Maine in 2025 - they are tiny, wicked fast and wary, plus the seas were not quite calm enough to let me really focus and compose at the same time. It was more like spray and pray.
Rio Grande's Salina Local has just pulled into Provo, Utah the afternoon of Dec. 12, 1976. GP40-2s No. 3121 and 3112 have classic orange and silver single stripe caboose 01482 spotted in front of the yard office while the conductor consults with the trainmaster. Meanwhile, a westbound manifest freight sails by with 'Action Road' caboose 01444 on the tail end.
