Le Pain Quotidien

A great example of my lovely wife's baking skills. And it tastes even better than it looks !

A comforting winter dish! Here's a link to the recipe. I used rotisserie chicken & I doubled the recipe. For me, it made 3 servings. For the chicken broth, I used Better than Bouillon--1 T. + 3 c. of water for the doubled recipe. onedishkitchen.com/chicken-dumplings-recipe/#wprm-recipe-... www.betterthanbouillon.com/products/roasted-chicken-base/...

The old mill was a serious sequence of photo ops. This homemade conveyance was one of the many interesting things found there, sitting under the roof/leanto at the back of the mill. It appears to be the frame and differential out of a large truck, possibly a dump truck based on the springs or even a tractor from a tractor trailer rig. No idea where they found the cool steel wheels. It is two wheeled to be towed and almost looks as if a tractor or even oxen could be used. The tongue is a most interesting construction and configuration. Would love to know more about this place.

A Photo a Day - July 31, 2010.

My friend Laura came back from Illinois and her sister, Jenny, had sent back with her for me 2 jars of homemade stawberry jam which she had made. This is by far the sweetest, most delicious strawberry jam I have ever eaten. So good in fact, that after typing this, I'm going to go have some with dinner!

Thanks Jenny!

Try these homemade chocolates available at the sweet shops in Mumbai or hill stations near by. You will never forget its taste. Clicked using Lumia 720

Finally put together a homemade suspension stand out of PVC tubing. It's Schedule 40, which is nice because it fits together tightly enough that it doesn't need glue but still comes apart pretty easily. These half-inch pipes are solid enough to support a figure nicely.

The PVC pipe cutter cost more than everything else I bought put together, and I have enough to probably make a second one (or just shorter support posts). They're 24" high and 18" wide, with 6.5 inch segments for the legs at the bottom.

homemade ginger cookies on a wooden background with Christmas scenery. vintage style.

.....Like my mom used to make. My former sister-in-law visited me last week, and as a surprise she had made me this candy like my mom always made at Christmas. It has been a number of years since I have had this, and it almost brought me to tears. One, because it really is that yummy, and two, because she had the idea and the willingness to do it. It was and is awesome.

Homemade Fried Breaded Calamari with Marinara Sauce

Inspired by the dessert at Tao. It's actually not that hard to make at home using this recipe: www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/homemade-fortune-cookies/

The hardest part is shaping the cookie when it's still hot out of the oven, painful to the fingers. Mine is filled with mango mousse and garnished with fresh raspberries and kiwano melon.

In the early 1960s, many families in Britain where ousting their old coal fires for the cleaner and more efficient gas fires of the time, many of which were being offered through Gas Board showrooms like this one. www.flickr.com/photos/8050359@N07/11633751034/

Fed up of cleaning out the hearth every morning, my parents purchased a 'New World' Sunbeam gas fire from these very showrooms. It was bought to replace the coal fire in our front room.

The sad part was that my father removed the rather nice 1930s wood-surround mantelpiece from around the fireplace, replacing it with a typical 1960s tiled affair; something he reinstated many years later.

It was all very exciting when the fitter from the Gas Board arrived to pipe in the new fire, and wow, instant heat! For my parents, no more lumping buckets of coal into the front room and getting down on bended knees to light bits of newspaper and kindling jammed between the coals to get a fire going. The old coal fire was only normally lit during the daytime or late afternoon, so it was lovely on Winter mornings to have a room that was warm. I would make the most of it, sitting in front of the fire to eat my breakfast before school.

Even so, we still had coal delivered because the coal fire in the living room wasn’t converted over to gas until a couple of years later. On that occasion, Dad bought a second hand gas fire, but this one had ‘coal fire’ effect lighting, which was a bit glam then! The main body of the fire was in a bland hammered-grey finish, so being a toolmaker, Dad made a polished stainless steel top for it, which actually looked factory fitted when in place, turning the mundane gas fire into something quite posh looking. When we were switched over to Natural Gas around 1970ish, the gas fitter who came around to convert our gas fires from town-gas to natural gas sat cross-legged on the floor for ages going through his handbook trying to find the model of our gas fire with a Stainless Steel top. …He honestly didn’t realise that it was a homemade affair.

Hey Flickr, it's been awhile. I need to get back on this site! It was my friend Jessica's birthday yesterday, so I made this for her :) In a bit of a creative rut, but baking and cooking has been a reliable go-to. Also my Facebook page has been staying active so be sure to follow me there!

A wholegrain wrap warmed up in the oven, spread guacamole, leftovers kale, beans & sweet potatoes, a bit of green salad and tahini sauce drizzled on top. Deliciousness !

The dough was soft, supple and very easy to work with. Once it rose and I shaped them into balls, I flattened them a little so they would have a head start with a nice round shape for the second rise. Before they went into the hot oven, a quick brushing of an egg wash makes these pale doughballs turn into glistening golden buns as they baked. If you like, before you set them in the oven, a scattering of sesame seeds would be quite acceptable for these. They are light and fluffy on the inside with a decent crust on the outside. Using milk, instead of all water, makes these very tender as well.
