I have had this copper and wood finial item for some time now and still have no idea what it is. maybe its a pole head ?
if it is then this one must be rare as it is made in copper and I have only see brass ones up to now.
The copper is thin and can spin like a prayer wheel.
Friendly Society Brasses were the emblems of village Friendly Societies.
What is the Friendly society about ?
Friendly Societies provided insurance for workers before the welfare state. They served social purposes and companionship and offered to members funds for funerals, money for medical care, and sick pay. Members also participated in ceremonial parades when banners were displayed. The highlight of the year was the annual feast day. Friendly Societies were particularly strong in rural communities in Somerset during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They were carefully administered and members adhered to strict rules. Women were excluded from most 'clubs'.
Club 'brasses' were mounted on poles and used during parades. The pole heads had different motifs, often depicting symbols of friendship and community. The Huntspill Friendly Society brass comprises oak leaves and acorns, symbolising strength, longevity, Englishness, and the idea that regular small contributions can grow into something useful.
A popular saying is that 'Great oaks from little acorns grow'.

I did some facepainting at the launch of the Global Work Action 10/10/10 Malaysia (9 - 11.30pm; Sunday, 11 July 2010; at field in front of Amcorp Mall). The theme was ONE WORLD, ONE GOAL. It was held in conjunction with the finals of the World Cup 2010, which Spain won.
This young girl was my first patron and she was very friendly. Most of the painting I did were the flags of Spain and The Netherlands. It was quite an experience. The organisers were Waterfall Survivors and Tourism Malaysia.
Global Work Action 10/10/10 raises awareness about Climate Change and mobilises people to do something about it.

They always make their dry landing a friendly pillaging splash. The Pirates of Treasure Island weave through the crowd during the grand parade at the 65th Lake City Pioneer Days.
I have stopped counting the times I've been approached with the question: Are you a photographer? It must be the size of my lens. Or my hungry, persistent look. Nonetheless, this friendly pirate gave me his group card and gallantly curtseyed after I said "I'll be glad to send you a good pic."
My daughter and I had our pictures taken professionally a few weeks ago in the South Park Blocks downtown in Portland...but I totally forgot to have the photographer get a few shots with Anna in her fun, totally adorable (and matching) fall coat. So the two of us headed back downtown late last Friday afternoon to rectify my oversight...and to make good use of a rare, gorgeous November afternoon in Oregon.
And what's a photo session without throwing around some fall leaves?!
