My husband meet this happy friendly Japanese man in Tokyo next to the Imperial Palace in April 2008. His English was quite good which he learnt from the radio. They spoke for about 20min. My husband spoke some Japanese to him, which made him extremely happy.
Everywhere you go, people stop to chat to you. Even if you’re precariously balancing on a thin slice of sea wall with a giant backpack at the time :)
But today on our way along the shore, glancing over to the volcano and lighthouse in the distance a friendly old lady with her trainers on stride past us. She was extremely sweet and we had a good chat about the Te Araroa trail we’re following. I sure hope I’m so jolly, sharp and spritely when I’ve been married for 60yrs and I’m 80! What a hero!
As we walked essentially through people’s back gardens for parts of the section we tried really hard not to look like we were gawping through their windows too much ( even though we were ;) ), and even so people stopped their BBQ’s and approached us for a chat. Super relaxed and friendly bunch these kiwis so far!

I have had this copper and wood finial item for some time now and still have no idea what it is. maybe its a pole head ?
if it is then this one must be rare as it is made in copper and I have only see brass ones up to now.
The copper is thin and can spin like a prayer wheel.

What is the Friendly society about ?
Friendly Societies provided insurance for workers before the welfare state. They served social purposes and companionship and offered to members funds for funerals, money for medical care, and sick pay. Members also participated in ceremonial parades when banners were displayed. The highlight of the year was the annual feast day. Friendly Societies were particularly strong in rural communities in Somerset during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They were carefully administered and members adhered to strict rules. Women were excluded from most 'clubs'.
Club 'brasses' were mounted on poles and used during parades. The pole heads had different motifs, often depicting symbols of friendship and community. The Huntspill Friendly Society brass comprises oak leaves and acorns, symbolising strength, longevity, Englishness, and the idea that regular small contributions can grow into something useful.
A popular saying is that 'Great oaks from little acorns grow'.

I did some facepainting at the launch of the Global Work Action 10/10/10 Malaysia (9 - 11.30pm; Sunday, 11 July 2010; at field in front of Amcorp Mall). The theme was ONE WORLD, ONE GOAL. It was held in conjunction with the finals of the World Cup 2010, which Spain won.
This young girl was my first patron and she was very friendly. Most of the painting I did were the flags of Spain and The Netherlands. It was quite an experience. The organisers were Waterfall Survivors and Tourism Malaysia.
Global Work Action 10/10/10 raises awareness about Climate Change and mobilises people to do something about it.
So we moved to another lake and this little fellow was feeding near the water. We all had to move back with the big glass to shoot him while feeding. After a short while he decided to come our way which put us all on the move. He had that wild eyed look for a bit which I never trust.
