San Ignacio lagoon is one of a small number of lagoons where Grey Whales go to mate and give birth. San Ignacio is the best place to encounter friendly whales, although the habit of coming to boats for a fuss only started in 1976, but is now a very common occurence.

In case you didn’t know, I freakin’ love Actias luna. I saw one once when I was a kid (maybe 7 or 8 years old) on my parents’ beanstalks in the garden. It was literally the most magical creature I’d ever seen in my short life, I couldn’t even understand how it was supposed to be a real thing. I didn’t see another until I was 25, when my mother brought me one that she’d found dead. It was missing a tail and was beaten and tattered, but it was still just as beautiful as I remembered. I mounted and framed it into a piece of art that sits on top of my mantle and plan on making it part of a tattoo someday.
Aside from another dead specimen I found on a walk with Rich in a park (which I also have framed in my ‘gallery’ of sorts in the living room), I’d never seen another living one until today, despite -years- of trying. I tried every type of light in my lures, I walked through forests, I researched local breeding patterns, I looked under leaves and bushes. Zip.
When I walked out the door to run some errands, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye, turned to lock the door and started walking again only to do a complete double take and flip the freak out. He was just hanging out there on the side of our column, minding his business and vibrating his wings in the shade. I threw open the door again, grabbed my camera, and took as many pictures as he’d put up with before he eventually fluttered up into the oak tree outside our balcony, where he stayed for the rest of the day :).
As a bit of trivia, this guy is a male (noted by the plumed antennae), so I really hope he’s found a gal to make more Lunas with <3
I spent the day in Crestone, Colorado enjoying the autumn colors, the mountain views, and the company of some wonderful denizens of Crestone.

A leftover from a previous trip to Morton Arboretum. While passing through the picnic area, this red squirrel has his strict attention on me. Shot with 100mm, I'm not more than 2 meters away and it allowed me to get some great shots.
