I was back at New Bridge Polo and Country Club last evening shooting a match between Crestview Farm and Bliss Polo. The power and speed of the riders and ponies is always amazing!

Two eagles were flying toward the small gate at the Lock and Dam No. 14 on the Mississippi River, then one of them suddenly made the above upside-down flight maneuver. I did not know the trigger of action until seeing Troy's photo because it happened so fast and unexpected.
January 10 was the 2015 annual "Hotdog and Chili" cookout day, hosted by Larry Williams (see the photo below). Although the weather forecast showed sunny morning, but cloudy afternoon with SW wind, I decided to visit LD14 to support the event. The SW wind would be ideal for eagle photography in the afternoon if sunny, but might create backlighting in the morning. Thus, the time window for good light was very short, not to mention the recent aggression and number of Canada geese there (pelicans were gone).
The nature continues to surprise me. Geese at the small lock were gone. Eagles were actively soaring and fishing very close to the gate without bait, including eagle landing on sheets of floating ice to fish. Perhaps the SW wind washed fish over to the gate as well as created updrafts that eagles could use for soaring.
I remember we were driving, driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
I read a post on Facebook, which was posted fifteen minutes beforehand, that 1989 was leading the southbound ZG4MQ through Springfield. After someone commented saying it was leading, I hauled down to a less than desirable place for a shot, considering I have never railfanned Auburn before. After stepping out of the truck, I could hear the duo of 710s screaming off at the north end of Auburn siding. With only 30 seconds to spare after a lens change, I catch my first leading heritage unit making all of track speed, waking the entire town of Auburn, Illinois in the process.
Taking a break from my Antarctic series (which, by the way, you will be able to see at the upcoming Slidefest on 30th of January, organised by GPP) I wanted to do a quick post with a Dubai image from a familiar location.
I’ve been going to this same location for close to two years now and for some reason I always like going there as there’s always a new twist to the images I come back with. This time it was the clouds. Really fast moving clouds that I initially went to capture in a timelapse and ended up capturing in a long exposure image that I’m very happy with it. The clouds were looking great not just because they were fast moving, but the direction in which they were moving made them look like some sort of rays shooting out from the back of Burj Khalifa.
Initially I was shooting with an ND filter, but in the end I didn’t need it anymore as it was getting fairly dark and I managed to get a 2 minute long exposure at f22.

Here is the Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus), actually running on the road, with his prey. They can run up to 15mph and snatch insects from the air.
If you compare this image side-by-side with a picture of the Looney Tunes Roadrunner running, you'll notice the resemblance. =)
Here's the coyote!

We were told that if they had to replace a part of this grinder one workman had to squeeze into this machine to loosen the bolts. And later again to fasten them.
Obviously they didn't look like me...

Reminiscent of its last year of service on the N&W before retirement, J Class 611 hustles 12 cars of revenue freight on a deadhead move from Lynchburg, VA to Spencer, NC. Following the previous weekend's excursions out of Lynchburg, the passenger equipment was taken to Bristol, VA for excursions with the Southern 4501, necessitating freight cars to aid in braking so as to not wear out the brakes on the 611. This was the first revenue freight train powered by the 611 after its recent rebuild and it is seen here at Altavista, VA, heading south on the NS Danville District.
Saved by a quick u-turn. Bears must eat about 25 fish a day to put on enough fat to survive the winter hibernation.
I scrapped my knees, but I promised Mommy I wouldn't run fast anymore.
