My old 1984 Alembic Series II "Exploiter" bass. The circuit board controlling gain and hum balance shown here. Trim pots are accessed on the other side of the brass plate. That seems to be five Signetics NE5534AN opamps. I assume the top three are input gain for the two pickups and the hum balance pickup. Not sure about the bottom two. Maybe discreet output gain for the two pickups?

 

I had this bass built in the summer of 1984. The only options (besides the walnut/maple/purple heart construction) were a graphite "box" in the neck and a neck shaped like a Rickenbacker 4001 that I'd been very comfortable playing. This is still the most musical bass I've ever owned, but it also weighs so much that it's seen relatively little use.

 

BTW, don't you love the shade of green on that hum balance cable? It's kind of like that Seaspray Green that was an option for '57 Ford Thunderbirds. Or that Celeste Green that Ferrari uses sometimes. I love that color. It may well be my favorite color. And that's why I love my Alembic! OK, maybe I'm overstating the importance of that green wire. But it's a great color.

In honor of the month of the military child, the 3rd Military Intelligence Battalion (Aerial Exploitation) hosted a military child appreciation day on April 21. The unit hosted an open house tailored to children.

 

Both children and family members were treated to static displays consisting of unit equipment, vehicles, and reconnaissance aircraft. Children (and parents) were able to climb behind the wheel of an LMTV and a HEMMT. They were also able to pose for photos with M4 training aids otherwise known as ‘rubber ducks’.

B Company, 3rd MI BN (AE) had a static display of their GUARDRAIL RC-12 reconnaissance aircraft and A Company 3rd MI BN (AE) had a static display of their DHC-7 Airborne Reconnaissance Low (ARL) multi- mission aircraft. Under the watchful eyes of Soldiers, who volunteered their time to demonstrate the equipment, the children were able to go inside unit aircraft and learn about the responsibilities and missions of their military parents.

 

While the 3rd MI BN (AE) aircraft and military vehicles made an impression, the USAG-Humphreys Military Police working dogs made a guest appearance and held a working dog demonstration. The MP’s demonstrated how their dogs are trained to sniff for drugs and to attack on command.

 

Military children are a critical part of the Army family and it was great for Soldiers to have the interaction with an enthusiastic audience and teach the children about the unit and its mission.

 

The event concluded with a Family Readiness Group Potluck Dinner. Children and Spouses, of the 3rd MI BN (AE) are looking forward to another fun filled open house this summer.

Getting ready for #OpLongford on social media.

 

Police have launched a two-day operation to protect the most vulnerable members of the community.

 

The initiative codenamed Operation Longford will see officers from across the Force and specialist units including traffic, tactical aid and the ANPR intercept teams take to the streets in a bid to target vulnerability in the community.

 

Some of the work as part of the days of action (Friday 29 to Saturday 30 May) will include visits to licensed premises, policing open spaces that attract youths and alcohol, takeaway enforcement, visit to shisha bars in addition to Metrolink and Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)* patrols.

 

Superintendent Craig Thompson operational lead said: “Safeguarding vulnerable people is an on-going priority for the Force which makes days of action like this so important. By having mechanisms in place and working alongside our partners we can ensure those at greater risk in our community are protected before the actions such as exploitation and abuse begin.

 

“As with our day to day policing we will also carry out enforcement work and will target offenders for a range of offences including, human trafficking, Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE*), antisocial behaviour and general criminality.”

 

As part of the operation officers from the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team and partners such as Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner will launch the partnership Safe Haven scheme. It is a place of safety for anyone who is out and about in the city centre on a Friday or Saturday night and in need of help, support, a place of safety or a designated meeting point for when you lose your friends.

 

Superintendent Thompson added: “We want Operation Longford to show our community that their safety comes first and will always be our priority. We will make use of all of our disruption tactics to put a stop to criminals.”

German Artist Haydar Zorlu performs Faust at SWJTU

 

Faust, the masterpiece of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, was performed by the prestigious German artist Haydar Zorlu at Southwest Jiaotong University on 9th May. The world-renowned drama was delivered solely by Haydar, who added his own unique twist to the show for the audience’s delight.

 

To add an exotic feel to his solo show, Haydar played the three roles of Mephisto: Pheies, Faust and Margret, and narrated the story himself. Along with the dark light and the simple stage props, Haydar brought all the audiences back to the medieval world and exploited the Goethe’s philosophical understanding and aesthetical recognition through a breath-taking stage performance.

 

Haydar also gave a lecture to the SWJTU students on drama performance on 13th May. He vividly illustrated how to prepare a show and how to connect the player with the audience on both an emotional and visual level.

Financé par le Royaume Uni et mis en œuvre par quatre opérations de maintien de la paix en Centre-Afrique, au République démocratique du Congo, au Sud Soudan et en Haïti, ce projet vise à aider les communautés à comprendre et identifier ce qui constitue l’exploitation et les abus sexuels, à pouvoir signaler une allégation tout en obtenant les informations vitales sur l’assistance disponible pour les victimes et le suivi des cas. Why we are occupying

 

We have have occupied the Vera Anstey Suite, the central meeting room of the university administration, to demand a change to the current university system.

 

LSE is the epitome of the neoliberal university. Universities are increasingly implementing the privatised, profit-driven, and bureaucratic ‘business model’ of higher education, which locks students into huge debts and turns the university into a degree-factory and students into consumers. LSE has become the model for the transformation of the other university systems in Britain and beyond. Massive indebtedness, market-driven benchmarks, and subordination to corporate interests have deeply perverted what we think university and education should be about.

 

We demand an education that is liberating – which does not have a price tag. We want a university run by students, lecturers and workers.

 

When a University becomes a business the whole of student life is transformed. When a university is more concerned with its image, its marketability and the ‘added value’ of its degrees, the student is no longer a student - they become a commodity and education becomes a service. Institutional sexism and racism, as well as conditions of work for staff and lecturers, becomes a distraction for an institution geared to profit.

 

We join the ongoing struggles in the UK, Europe and the world to reject this system that has changed not only our education but our entire society. From the occupations in Sheffield, Warwick, Birmingham and Oxford, to the ongoing collective takeover of the University of Amsterdam– students have made clear that the current system simply cannot continue.

 

We are not alone in this struggle.

 

Why Occupy?

 

In this occupation we aim to create an open, creative and liberated space, where all are free to participate in the building of a new directly democratic, non-hierarchical and universally accessible education: The Free University of London.

 

The space will be organized around the creation of workshops, discussions and meetings to share ideas freely. Knowledge is not a commodity but something precious and valuable in its own right. And we hope to prove, if only within a limited time and space, that education can be free.This liberated space should also be a space for an open discussion on the direction this university and our educational system as a whole is heading. We want to emphasise that this process is not only for students, and we encourage the participation of all LSE staff, non-academic and academic.

 

We base our struggle on principles of equality, direct democracy, solidarity, mutual care and support. These are our current demands which we invite all to openly discuss, debate and add to.

 

1 - Free and universally accessible education not geared to making profit

 

We demand that the management of LSE lobby the government to scrap tuition fees for both domestic and international students.

 

2 - Workers Rights

 

In solidarity with the LSE workers, we demand real job security, an end to zero-hour contracts, fair remuneration and a drastic reduction in the gap between the highest and lowest paid employees.

 

3 - Genuine University Democracy

 

We demand a student-staff council, directly elected by students and academic and non-academic staff, responsible for making all managerial decisions of the institution.

 

4 - Divestment

 

We demand that the school cuts its ties to exploitative and destructive organisations, such as those involved in wars, military occupations and the destruction of the planet. This includes but is not limited to immediate divestment from the fossil fuel industry and from all companies which make a profit from the Israeli state’s occupation of Palestine.

 

5 - Liberation

 

We demand that LSE changes its harassment policy, and to have zero tolerance to harassment.

 

We demand that LSE does not implement the Counter Terrorism Bill that criminalises dissent, particularly targeting Muslim students and staff.

 

We demand that the police are not allowed on campus.

 

We demand that LSE becomes a liberated space free of racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia and religious discrimination.

 

We demand that the school immediately reinstates the old ethics code and makes it legally binding, in line with the recently passed SU motion.

 

We demand that the school ensures the security and equality of international students, particularly with regards to their precarious visa status, and fully include them in our project for a free university.

Catlin certainly enjoyed hunting with the Indians, and described his own exploits in bringing down buffalo with gusto and graphic detail. He observed, with equally minute attention, that the buffalo provided everything the Plains Indian needed: "There are, by a fair calculation, more than 300,000 Indians, who are now subsisted on the flesh of the buffaloes, and by those animals supplied with all the luxuries of life. The great variety of uses to which they convert the body and other parts of that animal, are almost incredible to the person who has not actually dwelt among these people, and closely studied their modes and customs. Every part of their flesh is converted into food, in one shape or another, and on it they entirely subsist. The robes of the animals are worn by the Indians instead of blankets-their skins when tanned, are used as coverings for their lodges, and for their beds; undressed, they are used for constructing canoes-for saddles, for bridles-lariats, lassos, and thongs. The horns are shaped into ladles and spoons-the brains are used for dressing the skins -their bones are used for saddle trees - for war clubs, and scrapers for graining the robes-and others are broken up for the marrow-fat which is contained in them. Their sinews are used for strings and backs to their bows-for thread to string their beads and sew their dresses. The feet of the animals are boiled, with their hoofs, for the glue they contain, for fastening their arrow points, and many other uses. The hair from the head and shoulders, which is long, is twisted and braided into halters, and the tail is used for a fly brush. In this wise do these people convert and use the various parts of this useful animal, and with all these luxuries of life about them, and their numerous games, they are happy (God bless them) in the ignorance of the disastrous fate that awaits them" (Letters and Notes, Letter No. 31).

 

Catlin came to believe that the buffalo would be wiped out, which raised another question in his mind: "When the buffaloes shall have disappeared in his country, which will be within eight or ten years, I would ask, who is to supply [the Indian] with the necessaries of life then? and I would ask, further, (and leave the question to be answered ten years hence), when the skin shall have been stripped from the back of the last animal, who is to resist the ravages of 300,000 starving savages; and in their trains, 1,500,000 wolves, whom direst necessity will have driven from their desolate and game-less plains, to seek for the means of subsistence along our exposed frontier? God has everywhere supplied man in a State of Nature, with the necessaries of life, and before we destroy the game of his country, or teach him new desires, he has no wants that are not satisfied" (Letters and Notes, Letter No. 31). The end was not exactly as Catlin predicted, but he was nearly correct about the fate of the buffalo. Modern experts estimate that the buffalo herds in the 1830's were between forty and sixty million head; it is almost inconceivable that within fifty years, that number would be reduced to less than five thousand.

I’ve posted this image not out of pride, but out of shame from having visited Seaworld a few years ago, and as a tribute to these magnificent creatures.

 

I’ve just watched fascinating and disturbing documentary called Blackfish, about how killer whales are mistreated by Seaworld and similar parks. Many former Seaworld trainers were interviewed.

 

Killer whales are highly intelligent and emotionally developed animals, with a matriarchal society and a fierce commitment to their young. Killer whales from different parts of the world are essentially different nations with their own languages.

 

When Seaworld thrusts different killer whales together, they cannot understand each other and, coupled to being in basically a bathtub all their lives, become aggressive and disturbed. They bite each other, leaving teeth marks all over their bodies, as you can see on this killer whale above. Also, in captivity, their dorsal fin is often bowed over, as you can see above; this has not been seen in the wild.

 

No human has ever been harmed by a killer whale in the wild, but several have been killed by them in captivity.

 

Their young are often taken away from them, which leaves the mother distraught and grief-stricken.

 

Seaworld tells people that they only live to around 25-30 years in the wild. Actually they live to around a 100 years in the wild. They also tell people that they do not make the killer whales do anything that they do not want to do. In fact they enforce the routines with punishment – not feeding them unless they get it right.

 

Keeping an animal in captivity for conservation and education is one thing. Exploiting a highly intelligent creature for circus entertainment is entirely different. I can only apologise to the killer whales at Seaworld San Diego for my participation and consumption of this exploitation.

Securing the rear wheel to the frame by threading it into the rear dropouts is not only safer, it's stiffer. Increasing the rear axle diameter from 10mm to 12mm provides a stable platform for the disc braking forces and allows us to tune the rear seat stays for more compliance/comfort

After two years of testing and research we are able to provide even more comfort by reducing the seat post diameter on the carbon Renegade to 27.2mm. Through the combination of a new frame seat cluster and clamping configuration we were able to accentuate the benefits of top-down 27.2mm seatpost comfort while not compromising on side-to-side flex

Starting with a wide and consistent stack and reach range, we set out to design a frame that could handle on or off road conditions while maintaining a comfortable ride. As you start to review the geo chart you will noticed we have 3 different fork offsets, BB drops and rear center measurements. Add size specific tubing and 2 different sized rear triangles and you have what we feel is the perfect endurance geo for all sized riders. The reason for this is that we wanted the 48 and 61 to fit the rider correctly and make the geo changes needed to provide the perfect ride.

Size Specific Design (SSD) is the Jamis design philosophy and technique used to create the best possible riding bike for each size rider. Human presence in the municipality has been archeologically dated to more than 40,000 years; these investigations found that human settlement in the region dates to Mesolithic Period, when the first peoples began to concentrate in the areas around Alácer. This period was characterized with exploitation of the ecosystem in the Sado Estuary, when the river extended to São Romão, involving fishing, scavenging for shellfish, hunting and forging in the local forests. The primitive tools, made from chert, were adapted from the techniques of the late Paleolithic era. By the late Mesolithic period peoples had concentrated in the area of Comporta and Torrão, later establishing primitive defensive protection to support its communities.

 

These principal settlements were abandoned by the Copper Age, but later repopulated during the Iron Age, as was the case of Alcácer. Mediterranean trade, pioneered by the Phoenicians, introduced commercial colonies in Abul and Alcácer (then referred to as Bevipo or Keition), where a written alphabet and currency allowed commerce to flourish.

 

With the fall of Carthage after the Third Punic War, Alcácer is annexed by the Roman Empire during the middle of the 1st-2nd Century B.C.; the region of Alcácer becomes known as Salatia Urbs Imperatoria in honor of the nymph and wife of Neptune, for its importance in the Iberian salt trade and salt trade routes.[1] Salatia suffers many of the problems that developed from Roman urbe localized between Atlantic routes and Romanized northern Europe, made incrementally worse by Claudius' initiatives into England and Wales. These problems changed during the 3rd Century, when the port of Salatia was devalued, in favor of Olisipo (Lisbon).

 

With the rise of Gaul, most of Hispania becomes a vassal. Returning to the Imperial-fold later, the reorganization of Roman territories by Diocletian, in order to subvert the Military Anarchy that existed, Salatia's roles was transformed. In the following centuries, Salatia slowly becomes a poor distant colony of the much larger centers of Setúbal or Lisbon. The only exception was Torrão, which continued to prosper. Until 711, when the region was annexed by the Umayyad Caliphate of Damascus, the upper areas of Salatia continued to be gradually abandoned in favor of the lower lands along the river.

 

During the Ummayad occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and following an internal victory over Muladi rebels in the 9th Century, the city was offered as reward to the Abu Denis family, and renamed Qaşr Abī Dānis (قصر أبي دانس ) = Castle Abu Denis'[2], commonly known just as Al Qaşr (English: The Castle). After the Reconquista, the Arabic name was transliterated into Latin phonetics and Sal (from the Roman Salatia) was reintroduced.

La tour Eiffel est une tour de fer puddlé de 324 mètres de hauteur (avec antennes)o 1 située à Paris, à l’extrémité nord-ouest du parc du Champ-de-Mars en bordure de la Seine dans le 7e arrondissement. Construite par Gustave Eiffel et ses collaborateurs pour l’Exposition universelle de Paris de 1889, et initialement nommée « tour de 300 mètres », ce monument est devenu le symbole de la capitale française, et un site touristique de premier plan : il s’agit du second site culturel français payant le plus visité en 2011, avec 7,1 millions de visiteurs dont 75 % d'étrangers en 2011, la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris étant en tête des monuments à l'accès libre avec 13,6 millions de visiteurs estimés1 mais il reste le monument payant le plus visité au monde2,note 1. Elle a accueilli son 250 millionième visiteur en 2010.

D’une hauteur de 312 mètreso 1 à l’origine, la tour Eiffel est restée le monument le plus élevé du monde pendant 41 ans. Le second niveau du troisième étage, appelé parfois quatrième étage, situé à 279,11 m, est la plus haute plateforme d'observation accessible au public de l'Union européenne et la plus haute d'Europe, tant que celle de la Tour Ostankino à Moscou culminant à 337 m demeurera fermée au public, à la suite de l'incendie survenu en l'an 2000. La hauteur de la tour a été plusieurs fois augmentée par l’installation de nombreuses antennes. Utilisée dans le passé pour de nombreuses expériences scientifiques, elle sert aujourd’hui d’émetteur de programmes radiophoniques et télévisés.

 

Contestée par certains à l'origine, la tour Eiffel fut d'abord, à l'occasion de l'exposition universelle de 1889, la vitrine du savoir-faire technique français. Plébiscitée par le public dès sa présentation à l'exposition, elle a accueilli plus de 200 millions de visiteurs depuis son inaugurationo 2. Sa taille exceptionnelle et sa silhouette immédiatement reconnaissable en ont fait un emblème de Paris.

Imaginée par Maurice Koechlin et Émile Nouguier, respectivement chef du bureau des études et chef du bureau des méthodes d'Eiffel & Cie4, la tour Eiffel est conçue pour être le « clou de l'Exposition de 1889 se tenant à Paris. ». Elle salue également le centenaire de la Révolution française. Le premier plan est réalisé en juin 1884 et amélioré par Stephen Sauvestre, l’architecte en chef des projets de l'entreprise, qui lui apporte plus d'esthétique.

Le 1er mai 1886, le ministre du Commerce et de l'Industrie Édouard Lockroy, fervent défenseur du projet, signe un arrêté qui déclare ouvert « un concours en vue de l’Exposition universelle de 1889 »5. Gustave Eiffel remporte ce concours et une convention du 8 janvier 1887 fixe les modalités d'exploitation de l'édifice. La galerie Vittorio Emanuele II, au centre de Milan, fut une source d'inspiration, pour sa structure métallique.[réf. nécessaire]

Construite en deux ans, deux mois et cinq jours, de 1887 à 1889, par 250 ouvriers, elle est inaugurée, à l'occasion d'une fête de fin de chantier organisée par Gustave Eiffel, le 31 mars 1889o 3. Sa fréquentation s'érode rapidement ; la tour Eiffel ne connaîtra véritablement un succès massif et constant qu'à partir des années 1960, avec l'essor du tourisme international. Elle accueille maintenant plus de six millions de visiteurs chaque année.

Sa hauteur lui a permis de porter le titre de « plus haute structure du monde » jusqu'à la construction en 1930 du Chrysler Building à New York. Située sur le Champ-de-Mars, près de la Seine, dans le 7e arrondissement de Paris, elle est actuellement exploitée par la société d'exploitation de la tour Eiffel (SETE). Inicialmente tema de controversia de algunos, la Torre Eiffel sirvió como presentación a la Exposición Universal de París de 1889, la cual acogió a más de 236 millones de visitantes desde su inauguración. This is what Spotted Lake looks like from space (on Google Earth). The main lake (lower right) is about 700 metres (less than half a mile) long. The spots, some dark, some light, are clearly visible. I found one article on the internet that mentions "at least 3" other spotted lakes in the area. I suppose that these are the pale patches to the northwest of the main lake in this image. The two patches to the south of highway 3, one large with a few circles in it and a smaller one to the east, appear to be more or less intact. On the other hand, two patches on the north side of highway 3 appear to have been mined out. I couldn't find anything on the Internet about these exploitations (when, what, who, etc.). If anyone knows the story, please leave us a note.
