The king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) is the second largest species of penguin, smaller, but somewhat similar in appearance to the emperor penguin. There are two subspecies: A. p. patagonicus and A. p. halli; patagonicus is found in the South Atlantic and halli in the South Indian Ocean (at the Kerguelen Islands, Crozet Island, Prince Edward Islands and Heard Island and McDonald Islands) and at Macquarie Island.

King penguins mainly eat lanternfish, squid and krill. On foraging trips, king penguins repeatedly dive to over 100 metres (300 ft), and have been recorded at depths greater than 300 metres (1,000 ft). Predators of the king penguin include giant petrels, skuas, the snowy sheathbill, the leopard seal and the orca.

The king penguin breeds on the Subantarctic islands at the northern reaches of Antarctica, South Georgia, and other temperate islands of the region. It also lives on Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean.

This bird was exploited commercially in the past for its blubber, oil, meat, and feathers. Today, it is fully protected.

The king penguin stands at 70 to 100 cm (28 to 39 in) tall and weighs from 9.3 to 18 kg (21 to 40 lb). Although female and male king penguins are monomorphic they can be separated by their calls. Males are also slightly larger than females. The mean body mass of adults from Marion Island was 12.4 kg (27 lb) for 70 males and 11.1 kg (24 lb) for 71 females. Another study from Marion Island found that the mean mass of 33 adults feeding chicks was 13.1 kg (29 lb). The king penguin is approximately 25% shorter and weighs around a third less than the emperor penguin.

Birth of the legend… The launch of the twin-carburettor 650cc Bonneville in 1959 was one of the most important milestones in Triumph history. Within a few years the 'Bonnie' was the world's favourite high-performance motorcycle and a significant dollar earner for Britain.

The first Bonneville was on very similar lines to Triumph's previous range-topper, the Tiger 110. But the key difference is that the T120 boasts twin carburettors, which enhance acceleration and raise top speed very close to the 120mph suggested by the model code. On very early Bonnevilles the T110 cylinder head casting is adapted to take twin intake stubs, as can be clearly seen on this engine. Triumph's trademark headlamp nacelle was retained at first but dropped for 1960 to give the machine a more sporting look.

Bonneville was chosen as a model name to commemorate American Johnny Allen's 214mph world speed record set at the salt flats of that name in Utah. His exploits in a Triumph streamliner gave the company the slogan 'World's Fastest Motorcycle’.

A strong seller in America's growing recreational market, the Bonneville was also an icon of Britain's 'ton-up' culture in the Sixties. The model name remained in the Triumph range until 1983 and was revived by the marque's current owner John Bloor in 2001.

This classic machine is on display at the National Motorcycle Museum.

The Bora/Bura wind is katabatic, but generally does not have pronounced "Foehnizing" characteristics, as instead the winds falling from the Alps (Foehn) or from the Rocky Mountains (Chinook).

This is also evident from the absence of the opposite phenomenon above and behind the mountain range, namely the "stau", which is a necessary condition for the Foehn.

In any case, when the Bora blows for a long time and intensely, in clearly anticyclonic conditions, the air tends to dry out along the entire column and from the low "stau" clouds (which is a necessary condition for the Foehn, but not sufficient), that usually envelop the peaks of the Maritime Dinaric Alps with this wind, we move to sporadic formations of lenticular clouds that exploit the little humidity left by condensing at high altitudes above the highest peaks where there is an upwelling of currents that condense when they meet the colder ones at the top.

They form layer upon layer in the same position which is necessarily orographic and remain stationary until they dissolve, which occurs with the cessation or change of wind.

Here the humidity is very low and the lenticular cloud has only 2 or 3 layers, in precarious equilibrium.

The dry air of the anticyclonic bora (and progressively milder) fits well with the "false desert" environment of Stara Baška.

I say "false" because the precipitations are actually quite high (1100-1200mm or l/m2 per year) and well distributed throughout the year (therefore not responding to the classic Mediterranean canons with precipitations concentrated in the cold semester and almost nothing in the hot one), as in the other areas of the North-Eastern Adriatic, with relatively cold winters (some very cold, now memories of the last century) and hot summers, very hot in the last 30 years, but with the presence of frequent thunderstorms, which instead are no longer present in the south in midsummer.

The desert/lunar type environment is due to the poor, rocky soil, composed in particular of limestone and silica, as well as the frequent and intense presence of the bora/bura wind that does not allow the accumulation of humus on these exposed lands and therefore not by drought conditions, which are only casual and temporary at this latitude and geo-orographic position.

The road that leads to the hamlet is definitely spectacular.

The tin deposit in the Abbaretz region has been exploited for a very long time, since the Gallo-Roman period. But it was at the beginning of the 20th century that important research work began by the Nantes company of West Minerals (SNMO). The main mining was carried out in the open pit at the Bois Vert site to the west of the village of Abbaretz from 1952. The open pit mine reached depths ranging from 40 to 70 m. During operation, the materials extracted with a mechanical shovel were transported by conveyor belts either to the north of the departmental road directly in the case of discovery rock or ore too poor in prop, or to the plant of ore processing. At the plant, the ore was crushed and ground to recover the tin. Once the latter was recovered, the treatment residues were sent to large settling areas north of the departmental road. This activity generated the Bois Vert slag heaps visible today: the conical slag heap made up of waste rock (more or less coarse materials, less loaded with metals) and the tabular slag heaps in the form of trays made up of treatment residues ( finer sand type, more loaded with metals). The recent study carried out by BRGM concludes that there is a relatively high concentration of metals in the soils (arsenic in particular) present in the residues of former ore processing activities. This area, which has been used for mining in the past, naturally contains higher metal contents than the average for soil initially loaded with metals. This report indicates that apart from a walk along the hiking trail and on the climb to the conical slag heap lookout, other uses are not compatible with the site.

Knots

[...] A knot is a particular type of imperfection in a piece of timber, which reduces its strength, but which may be exploited for artistic effect. In a longitudinally-sawn plank, a knot will appear as a roughly circular "solid" (usually darker) piece of wood around which the roughly parallel fibres (grain) of the rest of the "flows" (parts and rejoins).

A knot is actually a portion of a side branch (or a dormant bud) included in the wood of the stem or larger branch. The included portion is irregularly conical in shape (hence the roughly circular cross-section) with the tip at the point in stem diameter at which the plant's cambium was located when the branch formed as a bud. Within a knot, the fibre direction (grain) is up to 90 degrees different from the fibres of the stem, thus producing local cross grain.

During the development of a tree, the lower limbs often die, but may persist for a time, sometimes years. Subsequent layers of growth of the attaching stem are no longer intimately joined with the dead limb, but are grown around it. Hence, dead branches produce knots which are not attached, and likely to drop out after the tree has been sawn into boards.

In grading lumber and structural timber, knots are classified according to their form, size, soundness, and the firmness with which they are held in place. This firmness is affected by, among other factors, the length of time for which the branch was dead while the attaching stem continued to grow.

Knots materially affect cracking (known in the industry as checking) and warping, ease in working, and cleavability of timber. They are defects which weaken timber and lower its value for structural purposes where strength is an important consideration. The weakening effect is much more serious when timber is subjected to forces perpendicular to the grain and/or tension than where under load along the grain and/or compression. The extent to which knots affect the strength of a beam depends upon their position, size, number, direction of fiber, and condition. A knot on the upper side is compressed, while one on the lower side is subjected to tension.[citation needed] If there is a season check in the knot, as is often the case, it will offer little resistance to this tensile stress. Small knots, however, may be located along the neutral plane of a beam and increase the strength by preventing longitudinal shearing. Knots in a board or plank are least injurious when they extend through it at right angles to its broadest surface. Knots which occur near the ends of a beam do not weaken it. Sound knots which occur in the central portion one-fourth the height of the beam from either edge are not serious defects.[2]

Green herons are carnivorous, mainly eating fish and invertebrates. They are opportunistic foragers with a broad prey base, depending on the availability of species present. They exploit superabundant food resources, such as breeding frogs. Their invertebrate diet includes: leeches, earthworms, dragonflies, damselflies, waterbugs, grasshoppers, and crayfish. Some of the many fish eaten are: minnows, sunfish, catfish, perch, eels, and, in urban areas, goldfish. Other vertebrates eaten are rodents, lizards, frogs, tadpoles, and snakes.

Their heavy bill enables them to capture large prey. Feeding can take place at any time, day or night. Typically, prey is captured with a darting stroke of the head and neck, lunging the body towards the victim and either grabbing or impaling the prey.

CP has yet another SD60 leader today as it crawls around the curve at Greves Street in Milwaukee. It was a lot nicer catching this one in some nice light rather than the remains of a tropical storm, but hey ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Even if that means you aren’t a spoiled rich kid that can get a DSLR whenever, or exploit parents for trips to New York, and then using parked trains as a means of antagonizing others. Just remember it’s never about the camera, it’s about the person behind it.

Papa Francesco, quale rivoluzione?

KJ1 also executed.

It would be too nice if the Pope said a word against the culling of bears, against the exploitation of animals in circuses, against the zoos that exploit them, thousands of kilometers from their natural habitat.... but when ever? Many praises to Creation (Pope Francis, Laudato si', 2015) but never a word of pity towards non-human Creatures.

But he will realize that the lack of words of mercy towards animals will slowly but surely lead to his voice fading like a shadow when he then talks about human rights. It's already like this now.

Pope Francis, what revolution?

Exploitation of salt in Colchani on the salar of Uyuni.

That's the biggest desert of salt of the world and one of the most extraordinary places that I have never visited.

The pit Bindweide is a visitor's mine in Steinbach / Sieg in the administrative district Altenkirchen. The history of this pit decreases to 1837, at that time the claim of the pit field occurred. However, already about 1810 a deep tunnel was attached in the area. In 1852 the mining law were lent, and in 1864 the mining company began work.

Spavin and brown iron ore was extracted before all hematite, besides also. In 1869 the annual support amounted to 7.393 t of ore, in 1880 there were already 26.142 t of brown iron ore and hematite as well as 218 t of spavin iron stone.

Already in 1889 one reached a support of 99.491 tons of hematite and brown iron ore as well as 14.912 t of spavin iron stone. The extraction per month lay with maximum 10,000 tons. All together one promoted 5,123,810 t of iron stone. On the 30th of September, 1931 the company was concluded, but because of the rest stocks of approx. 11 million tons the pit was led as a reserve mine.

Hence, it was possible to alter the pit Bindweide in a visitor's mine. This happened from 1981, in 1986 the visitor's mine was opened. In June, 2006 300,000 visitor's borders was crossed.
