The tin deposit in the Abbaretz region has been exploited for a very long time, since the Gallo-Roman period. But it was at the beginning of the 20th century that significant research work began by the Nantes company of West Minerals (SNMO). The main mining was carried out in the open pit on the Bois Vert site west of the village of Abbaretz from 1952. The open pit mine reached depths ranging from 40 to 70 m. During operation, the materials extracted with a mechanical shovel were transported by conveyor belts either to the north of the departmental road directly in the case of discovery rock or ore too poor in prop, or to the plant of ore processing. At the plant, the ore was crushed and ground to recover the tin. Once the latter was recovered, the treatment residues were sent to large settling areas north of the departmental road. This activity generated the Bois Vert slag heaps visible today: the conical slag heap made up of waste rock (more or less coarse materials, less loaded with metals) and the tabular slag heaps in the form of trays made up of processing residues (materials finer sand type, more loaded with metals). The recent study carried out by BRGM concludes that there is a relatively high concentration of metals in the soils (arsenic in particular) present in the residues of old ore processing activities. This area, which has given rise to mining in the past, naturally contains higher levels of metals than the average soil initially loaded with metals. This report indicates that apart from a walk along the hiking trail and on the climb to the belvedere of the conical slag heap, other uses are not compatible with the site.

Do you recognise him? Protecting you from being exploited by those above you and preventing you from falling into the misery of those below you; helping you to get through the sea of revolution without getting wet shoes; making you look charitable and green at next to no expenses. Inspired by Simon Jowett's www.flickr.com/photos/sjpowermac innovative take on York station, and notably this wonderful old timepiece, I couldn't resist having a go myself during a visit earlier this week to meet an old college friend.

In fact the clock is ideally positioned to exploit several angles and I came away with at least two or three usable images, I think! This one catches a lady snapping the departing London Kings Cross train - and well, I just had to capture the event myself.

For the avoidance of doubt it's 11.37am - a timely reminder I need to reset my camera clock!

When I begun to process this exposure bracketing, I thought that I knew what I wanted to attain. I was perfectly wrong. Indeed, these RAW files kept a few secret bits of beauty which I was not aware of when I selected them for processing – and they changed the course of the journey I had foreordained.

I was in a gloomy mood, for both personal and general concerns, and the RAWs looked rather duller than the average – taken: they appeared to accurately mirror the state of my soul. At worst, I would have wasted some hours of pointless procesing work before deciding to look for something better. Nobody would have known. However things were to contradict my expectations. I got some good news (a rarity in those tough days) about the health conditions of my brother and my “adopted brother-in-law” (i.e. my brother’s brother-in-law); on the other hand, Darktable – that wonderful software – gifted me with a few unanticipated treasures. My thoughts were growing more and more positive and the processing of this bracketing were proceeding accordingly: a hidden beauty was unfolding before me, my own persisting unawareness of it notwithstanding. At last I found myself with a picture that had apparently self-processed itself*, while I was busy exploring uncharted thoughts that kept emerging along the way

* Admittedly a bizarre phenomenon, which Maurits Cornelius Escher would have loved – think of his Drawing hands.

I would avoid to nag you about this incredibly wonderful location: you can take a look at my album Silent banks, the complete collection of the photos I have taken there; the attached narratives are rich in information about the place, if you are curious enough.

This location is especially renowned for its legendary morning mists, but only a thin layer of milky mist floated above the water that morning. On top of the hill in the distance, beyond the river, lays the sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca ( = Madonna of the Rock), already brushed by the first light pouring from the Eastern horizon.

I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.7/0/+1.7 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then, as usual, I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic as a possible final contribution to the processing. While this technique (which, its imposing name notwithstanding, is pretty simple to implement) often holds interesting results in full daylight landscapes, its effects on a low-light capture (e.g. a sunrise) are utterly unpredictable, so at the end of my workflow I often give it a try to ascertain its possibilities. In this picture I have exploited this technique in a very frugal, yet effective, way – just some touches where needed.

RAW files has been processed with Darktable. Denoising with DFine 2 and the Gimp (denoised and original images blended by lightness).

The anger of the demonstrations and protests did not infect everyone. Just a short distance away from the blockade, youths steeped in consumerism were still relaxing and having fun. This is partly due to the blockade of information by the authorities, and partly due to the fact that thirty years of condoning and exploiting consumerism and suppressing social autonomy have created a large group of people who are indifferent to the fate of others.

On the night of 26 November 2022, a demonstration took place in Middle Wulumuqi (Urumqi) Road, Shanghai in memory of the victims of the fire in Wulumuqi (Urumqi), Xinjiang, the casualties of which were caused by the building being locked up as a result of absurd anti-epidemic measures which made it impossible for residents to escape. The police ended up arresting many of the demonstrators and loading three police buses:

On the evening of the 27th, a large area of the neighbourhood where the demonstration took place last night was suddenly blocked off, allowing only people to leave and not enter, perhaps to prevent further demonstrations from gathering there.. A large number of people gathered at the intersections of the blocked-off neighbourhoods, which gradually festered into a new demonstration.

It was a property of Juan Narbona who exploited it like limekiln.

In the year 1738 there was constructed an oratory and a chapel that were the only ones between Montevideo and Villa Soriano

The Estancia de Narbona, (Narbona’s Farm), built by Don Juan de Narbona in 1732, is an archeological relic. Its Chapel and Oratory were the only ones that existed at those times between Montevideo and Villa Soriano. They were related to the Camacho family, and they are near the Camacho Bridge, surrounded by a beautiful park.

Sigiriya (Sri Lanka) - This photo was taken near my hotel. The elephants are there for tourists. The family that owns two pachyderms has installed a high wooden platform, accessible by a staircase so that tourists can climb on the elephants, without the slightest effort. I sympathized with the mahouts, but I refused to take an "elephant ride" because I am against the exploitation of wild animals. Even though I am aware that this is the mahouts' livelihood. Despite the chains I did not have the feeling that the elephants were mistreated, but I cannot guarantee anything. On the other hand, I accepted the invitation of a mahout, to take a series of photos on the bathing and washing of the two pachyderms.

The Exploited

XL Tour

Transhumance

Anamakia (Madagascar) – The rural village of Anamakia is located about ten kilometers southwest of Diego Suarez.

The dirt track leads to the salt flats, known as the "Diego salt flats." The site covers 700 hectares, with an annual production of 100,000 tons of sea salt. When I went there, there was no activity. On the way back, near Anamakia, I focused on scenes of rural life.

The sin of King Nimrod, in the Old Testament, was to build a tower high enough to reach into Heaven so that he could access God.

The myth goes that as the Tower of Babel reached a great height, God was displeased and was concerned that humanity as a unified people would be capable of great things by their working together. So "He" caused great confusion in peoples' minds and sent them running in divergent directions. This confusion caused them to splinter their singular language into dozens of different tongues, from which sprang many nations and differing cultures of the world.

The arrogance of modern technology and science seeks to replace god ( God ) with it's own singular omnipotence, to reach heights unforeseen where every single aspect of life can be known and predicted. That would qualify as 'omniscience' to me, a quality usually reserved for the Biblical God. It's richly ironic how science works SO hard to deny the existence of God while doing everything it can to take 'his' place.

I consider myself very lucky to have a willing victim of my photographic exploits. My hubby, Ron Harper and I have been married for 10 years now and still loving it. I asked him to sit for a portrait session today to commemorate the moment.

Dead Sea salts and minerals have long been exploited for their skin-friendly properties. While swimming, the extreme salinity will help you discover cuts you never knew you had (don’t shave beforehand), and be prepared for a few minutes of agony if any water gets in your eyes. 'Swimming’ is actually a misnomer – the buoyancy makes it difficult to do much more than happily bob.

The northeast coast is lined with luxury resorts. Here you can enjoy a spa treatment, watch the sunset across the water and look across to the West Bank and the distant lights of Jerusalem.

Ho fotografato alcuni miei amici vegetariani o vegani.

Only a low percentage of the Italian population is vegetarian or vegan (about 8%), but the latest report by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) is very clear in urging the world population" in favor of diets that involve less use of resources. " According to the report, a decisive change in our diets in the vegetarian sense could free millions of square kilometers from intensive exploitation, reducing CO2 emissions by up to six billion tons per year compared to current levels.

But those who choose to become vegetarian or vegan do not do so for an abstract love for the environment or for the future of humanity, but rather for the awareness of the similar sensitivity of the other species to ours, and of the equal right to life. 1975 was the essay by the philosopher Peter Singer "Animal Liberation", a fundamental text of animalism and anti-speciesism.

I photographed some of my vegetarian or vegan friends.

In 1965, Peter Wolkonsky purchased the old farm buildings of a working farm and redesigned the facades and roofs in the style of a 17th-century manor house. He created various water features, built and decorated outbuildings, a fountain, pavilions, and an Italian grotto adorned with seashells. Storms in 1987 and 1999 caused extensive damage. After Peter Wolkonsky's death in 1997, his daughter Isabelle and her husband, landscape architect Timothy Vaughan, restored the garden and continued his work. The landscape architect died in August 2025. In 2021, the gardens were purchased by luxury shoe designer Christian Louboutin. I mixed some of my more iconic images into this collage. The cow with the stripe in the upper right was my first PANO-Vision shot ever. It happened accidentally. I photographed the cow in panorama mode on my iPhone when a car, the stripe, whizzed by. I thought, "What the hell? Is there something wrong with my iPhone?" Within a couple of weeks, I was exploiting the algorithmic glitch intentionally, and so was Richard. We later learned that some guys out in California had discovered the same glitch, Richard Rahders, and John Lien. They formed their group, Rogue Pano, on Facebook. Liz Mack discovered the medium, created her fantastic images, and has written two e-books on the subject that include me, Richard Warner, Richard Rahders, John Lien, and her work, among others.

The set of Covadonga lakes is made up of two small lakes, the Enol and the Ercina, of glacial origin, located in the Asturian part of the Picos de Europa National Park, in the western massif of said mountain range. There is a third lake, the Bricial, which only has water during the thaw, but it also belongs to the whole. In Asturias they are known simply as the lakes.

They are located in the council of Cangas de Onís and are accessed through a 14.5 km road that starts at the Real Sitio de Covadonga to reach Lake Enol first, including also a small road that would take them to Lake Ercina. Its frequent use since 1983 as the end of the stage in the Cycling Tour of Spain has made the place internationally popular.

The massive influx of tourists, especially cycling fans, has forced to limit the development of cycling events in the surroundings of Los Lagos. However, the area has a tourist infrastructure.

The excessive influx of visitors, especially in high season, has also meant that access by car to the Lakes is restricted, and can only be accessed using public transport enabled for this. Private vehicles can only circulate first thing in the morning (before 8:30 a.m.) and late in the afternoon (after 20:00 p.m.). In low season, there are no access restrictions with a private vehicle.

In the vicinity of Lake Ercina, in Buferrera, iron, manganese and mercury mines were exploited until 1979. People who visit this place have at their disposal a "Buferrera parking" car park, a visitor center, a shelter and two restaurant bars for their enjoyment.

Sprimocoop co-owns a five-turbine wind farm.

Specifically, the operating company for the five turbines is three-quarters owned by the developer (VENTIS), with the remaining quarter being split equally between the municipality of Sprimont and Sprimocoop.

The wind turbines are located north of the E25 motorway, on either side of the Route Nationale 678, which connects Sprimont to Louveigné.

The five turbines are identical. They are Nordex N117/3600 Delta turbines. Each has a maximum output of 3.6 megawatts (3,600 kW) and provides power as long as the wind speed is between 10 and 75 km/h.

Each tower is about 100 meters high and supports a nacelle containing an alternator connected to the shaft of a huge three-bladed polyester-fiberglass composite propeller with a diameter of 116 meters. The surface area of the circle covered by each propeller is 10,715 m², or just over one hectare. Each of these square meters provides 336 watts of power to the machine.

The blade tips will rise to approximately 150 meters and descend to just over 40 meters from the ground. The rotation speed is 14.1 revolutions per minute. Therefore, a blade will pass over the same spot every 1.4 seconds.

Glasgow

The Mary Barbour statue in Glasgow is a tribute to a remarkable woman who played a pivotal role in the 1915 rent strikes. Located at Govan Cross, the statue was unveiled on March 8, 2018, coinciding with International Women's Day. Mary Barbour led "Mrs. Barbour's Army," a group of women who protested against landlords exploiting wartime poverty by raising rents. Their efforts led to the Rent Restriction Act of 1915.

The statue, created by sculptor Andrew Brown, depicts Barbour leading her "army" and serves as a reminder of her contributions to social justice and housing reform. She was also one of Glasgow's first female councillors and a champion for maternity benefits, education, and equal voting rights.

Mary Barbour was born on February 20, 1875, in Kilbarchan, a village in Renfrewshire, Scotland. She grew up in a working-class family, with her father being a handloom carpet weaver. Her early life in Kilbarchan and later in Elderslie shaped her understanding of the struggles faced by working-class communities, which influenced her activism later in life.

Stories of exploration make for fascinating reading and they impress on the mind that exploration is a joint venture even though often the name of a single person is attached to a given account. Alfred Russell Wallace (1823-1913), the great English naturalist and traveller, has a sharp eye for others than himself in his exploits. A good example is a wonderful sentence from his "The Malay Archipelago" (1869):

'It was on the 13th of June, 1856, after a twenty days' passage from Singapore in the "Kembang Djepon" (Rose of Japan), a schooner belonging to a Chinese merchant, manned by a Javanese crew, and commanded by an English captain, that we cast anchor in the dangerous roadstead of Bileling on the north side of the island of Bali.'

In the book, Wallace gives a marvellous description of the geography, the natural world and the great variety of human culture of the Malaysian and Indonesian islands. But he is not only a describer; he also theorises about what he sees. On the basis of his observations he put forward the theory of the Wallace Line. This is an imaginary boundary running through the Lombok Strait (between the islands of Bali and Lombok) which separates the zoogeographical areas of Asia from Australia. Although the Strait is rather narrow - only about 22 miles across - it is extremely deep and was a barrier that in theory kept the flora and fauna of Asia divided from those of the Australian region.

This idea has today basically been abandoned. But the fact of the difference between the various species of plants and animals of those continental areas helped Charles Darwin conceptualise his theory of the origin of species.

This photo shows a plantation of palm trees, a thatched beach hut, and the Blue Waters leading to the Lombok Strait. My back is to magnificent Mount Rinjani, and from this spot in clear weather you can see to the East the outlines of Bali's Mount Agung.

'Leaving Bileling,' writes Russell a few pages on, 'a pleasant sail of two days brought us to ... the island of Lombock...' And he continues: 'We enjoyed superb views of the twin volcanoes of Bali and Lombock, each about eight thousand feet high, which form magnificent objects at sunrise and sunset, when they rise out of the mists and clouds that surround their bases, glowing with the rich and changing tints of these the most charming moments in a tropical day'.

With this book on my knee, a gin-and-tonic at hand, and this view: what more could one wish to enjoy!

BROUAGE, oyster farms

Charente maritime, la France.

The port of Brouage was built in the middle of the sixteenth century to market the salt produced in salt marshes around the village of Hiers.

Brouage will become under Louis XIV one of the most important port for the supply of salt, "white gold", from all over Europe.

Strategic place of the region, the citadel will be fortified and enlarged by several great engineers of the kingdom of France including the famous Vauban.

Today, the sea has withdrawn to about ten km and the port is closed.

The salt marshes have been replaced by many oyster farms.

I should have been in Brecon today, but having found a hole in my roof my walking plans were seriously curtailled.

The river Avon at Eckington is always a beautiful spot, particularly at sunrise. The river is still slowly getting back to normal having been in flood earlier in the week.

I'm just glad that there weren't too many witnesses for my DIY roofing exploits later in the day, as my methods were... improvised... so much so that Paul would have been proud of me! I used my climbing gear to slither up the frozen half of the roof, and over the top to reach the hole. I replaced the big broken tile whilst roped to a selection of attachment points but avoiding the solar panels, and then slid back down to the roof edge. Getting back onto the ladder got the adrenalin going as it decided to move sideways as I put my foot on it....

Scaffolding? For wimps!
