Taken on a cold grey overcast day in February.

Kingfishers (Alcedo atthis) or Alcedinidae are a family of small to medium-sized, brightly colored birds in the order Coraciiformes. They have a cosmopolitan distribution, with most species found in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The family contains 114 species and is divided into three subfamilies and 19 genera. All kingfishers have large heads, long, sharp, pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. Most species have bright plumage with only small differences between the sexes. Most species are tropical in distribution, and a slight majority are found only in forests. They consume a wide range of prey usually caught by swooping down from a perch. While kingfishers are usually thought to live near rivers and eat fish, many species live away from water and eat small invertebrates. Like other members of their order, they nest in cavities, usually tunnels dug into the natural or artificial banks in the ground. Some kingfishers nest in arboreal termite nests. A few species, principally insular forms, are threatened with extinction. In Britain, the word "kingfisher" normally refers to the common kingfisher.

Henry wonders why the chest is open. Will it stay open, will he be able to continue to sit in it? So much is on his busy mind:-)

Another image I took way back in January 2014 on a visit to London. This is Sligsby Place just off Long Acre by Covent Garden in London. I spotted this guy sitting on the bench just staring into the Shop Window of Jaeger, I wonder what his thoughts were?

A contemplating Girl:

She Knew.

She was meant to meet catastrophe,

It was only that she learnt from,

It set her free,

On the darkest Days,

She returned to the smell of paper,

of words that healed,

of lives that had gone by,

She could confide in those stories,

The people from centuries away,

Her tragedy gave her life a meaning,

The stories made her life less lonely.

As much as closeup shots of polar bears are interesting, I felt the story of this image is not the bear. It's the ice. The ice is visually interesting as it breaks up. And what the ice or lack thereof means for the future of this bear, her icy world, and polar bears in general.

Sea ice is the lowest on record this season in Svalbard. Polar bears depend on sea ice to hunt seals. With ice breaking up sooner in the season every year, there will be more hungry polar bears by late summer. Unfortunately some of these bears may starve. Regardless of the debate of what is causing climate change, climate is changing rapidly in the polar regions. This will have profound consequences to the wildlife residing in these regions.

I know this image won't do well on Flickr because the version everyone sees is small. But I believe it would look spectacular printed very large.

What more is needed to get you deep in thought than a beer, two dogs, cozy pants and a sun filled warm afternoon? I took this candid shot over the Thanksgiving holiday of my brother-in-law just after he came home from work, changed clothes and sat down outside on a grassy hillside. I originally considered the title to be "Contemplating the Enigma's of Life", but decided to shorten it up a bit.

The bright sunshine and deep shadows made all of the many colors and shades seem to clash together, so I made the decision to convert this image to black & white. Now, rather than being distracted in trying to decide what to look at, the focus is more on his expression of being lost in thought. I hope he wasn't thinking "when will all these relatives leave?", lol. As always, it was a great vacation spent visiting family that lives many hours away! I know that was what I was thankful for...

Comments and constructive feedback are always appreciated!

With all the Drizzle and the Sun, today was an interesting day. This Egret was in the area fishing and after a light meal it stood there simply contemplating the sea. Cheers everyone.

Just little editing on the hair (had to redraw the hair at least and edit a couple other things)

I asked this guy if he would stand up for a moment...in return for getting a copy of the photo for himself.

Wilbur rested above Lake Lillian as he considered the adventure ahead of us. From here, we went back down to the lake shore and traveled around the lake to the steep trail to the top of the ridge. The trail to the ridge is in the center of this image. After gaining the ridge, we traveled right on a goat trail across the ridge which disappears above Wilbur's head. I call it a goat trail because of the copious quantities of droppings and tufts of hair left on branches.

A man was sitting by the end of a fishing boat and seemed like he was contemplating. thus the heading . The Sunrise that day was beautiful and i could use the boat as a leading line!

I've always believed that every interesting photo needs at least one primary subject. This is usually the thing that inspired us to take that photo.

Of course there is no limit to the number of interesting "things" that we could include in one photo, but there should always be at least be one obvious one.

If the viewers of our photos can't immediately identify what it is they're supposed to be looking at, then they probably won't spend much time looking at them.

What do we do when everything looks equally interesting (or boring, depending on your outlook on life)? We could either zoom in and focus on the most interesting thing, or we could attempt to include as many interesting things as possible.

Everything in this panorama looks interesting to me, yet nothing stands out as being more interesting than anything else. So I'll completely understand if you don't understand why I took this photo. There is no primary subject here.

There is, however, only one primary emotion here... you either feel it or you don't.

That happens, sometimes, when you stare at the shoreline horizon.

Micah and I were in a car accident this morning... has been a pretty horrible day :-(
