Autumn is here and almost gone ... a break from Iceland

Soaking up the sunlight on a bright winter day and sitting on top of St Giles' Hill looking south over the Hampshire Downs.

I have a few heroes. Frans de Waal and Frans Lanting are two of them. Frans Lanting is one of the best nature photographers, who won many awards, and Frans de Waal is one of the leading primatologists in the world, who's books I can recommend to everybody who wants to know something about our closest relatives, the Bonobo and the Chimpansee. As a young biology student I attended a college given by de Waal, before he went to America to become a professor.

De Waal and Lanting made a wonderful book about the Bonobo (Bonobo, the forgotten ape), the most elegant great ape IMO, and the pictures there were very inspirational. So when Ouwehand Zoo started a Bonobo group, I went and tried to make a few nice shots of which this is one.

Although I am not completely happy with the whole series (and I probably have to go back) I like this portrait of a young Bonobo who more or less is in deep thought.

One of many images I captured of this patient Great Blue. He stood calmly while 4 or 5 photographers snapped his portrait.

Going through Taman Safari Park and getting up close and personal with the orangutans, yielded some unusual portraits. Indonesia has done such a great job of trying to save this species from extiction and I doubt that it has been easy. I'm sure that this man of the forest would rather be in his habitat, but the rain forest is being cut down for palm oil for human consumption.

At Kreative People we are having the 245th Treat This challenge. I included the two images in the first comment box below in making this photomontage.

Explore Sept 27, 2009 Anna's Hummingbird. View Large On Black (Purple flowers are Hostas. The Anna's Hummingbird is a fairly common, mainly resident species, with its normal range extending from extreme southwestern British Columbia to northwestern Mexico. Tends to wander eastward less than Selasphorus hummers, but has been recorded in many central and eastern states. Mine over winter here in my backyard. I just have to change the water when it freezes. IMG_8792

Seagulls are little thieves and are smart in their own way. This seagull not only helped himself to our lunch but he went down on the rocks contemplating whether or not to catch a fish. He never did get that fish however.

Ascending the Besseggen Ridge in Jotunheimen national park, Norway, on our first hike there. A hiker pauses on the ridge, gazing at the unfolding vistas. It is an incredible hike with the trail rising up steeply on a rocky ridge to reveal the glacier fed turquoise blue waters of Lake Gjende deep below on one side and the darker grey waters of Lake Bessvatnet on the other side, surrounded by rugged snow-dotted peaks. It was an unrelenting climb for a while but the views on top of the ridge and along the way were unbelievably rewarding. One of the most spectacular hikes I have done, but also unnerving at times, with the trail giving way to dizzying depths thousands of feet below. We were lucky to get decent weather on the way up but the clouds rolled in quickly, the rain making the rocks somewhat slippery and the descent (not so steep) was through rain, hail and sleet!

I have more photos from here, but there just wasn't much space on the ridge to hang out and wait for the best shot. There were a lot of hikers, but I like this one that I managed to capture with just one person in the foreground ...
