Chef Alex Lowe, from Swansea in South Wales, has been in the Royal Navy for 2 years. He is currently onboard HMS Westminster, a Portsmouth based Type 23 frigate, in the Indian Ocean as part of the Royal Navy’s long standing commitment in the area
Alex is part of the Logistics department and, as a chef, he helps provide three nutritious meals a day for the 200 sailors on board.
This will include the ship’s Christmas lunch of turkey, beef and gammon with all the trimmings followed by the traditional Christmas pudding and mince pies. As this will be held at sea a few days before the 25th, there will also be a BBQ brunch on Christmas Day itself due to the hot climate that HMS Westminster will be experiencing in the region.
Alex is also first aid trained and is part of one of the ship’s first aid teams which is a crucial part of the ship’s capability in an emergency or war situation.
This is 20-year-old Alex’s first Christmas away from home and he normally spends it with his family. He said: “Christmas is a time where all my family come together for one occasion, and the day is about nothing or no one else but family and it’s been like that since I can remember.
“This being my first ever Christmas away, and the longest I have ever been away from home, so it is very hard. The thing I will miss most has definitely got to be Christmas dinner, everyone sat around the table reminiscing and laughing about the years gone by and the banter. That and all the little traditions we have.
“That said, I may be missing all that but the experiences and sights that I’m gaining make it that much easier. Also, quite literally, all being in the same boat as 200 other people makes Christmas and the deployment that much more enjoyable. So for me Christmas is going to be a lot different but I’m still looking forward to it no matter who I spend it with.”
Alex is due back to the UK in February 2014.

Little Chef on the A1 near to Grantham.
All in all a cracking venue for a Little Chef, close to the picturesque market town of Grantham.
I had a fairly rancid version of a full English breakfast - one ratty sausage, some pretty poor bacon, beans, mushrooms in slime, and a slice of black pudding which tasted of a mixture of pot pourri and those pineapple chunk things that pubs put in urinals. Plus a pot of tea for £1.99, what a stinking rip off. It's no wonder the place is going bust, although I did get a free lollipop for clearing my plate.
Come on Little Chef people, you can do better than this.
Just discovered today (10/4/13) that the owner of this Burger Chef had a falling out with the chain back in the 1960s and then ventured out on his own. (probably at that time the distinctive top of the sign was lopped off while the "HAMBURGERS" part of the sign remained). Not sure when they finally closed, but the sign continued to be used for several unsuccessful businesses for many years. The building seems to have been altered from its original appearance. The sign was finally removed in September 2013.
