The choice for B&W was mainly due to the weird white balance of the mixed light sources.
The f/11 may have been a bit more than needed for the characters on the labels to be visible but the ISO 12800 of the 5DIV is impressive.

Went fishing today in Chiba with friends. After bringing our haul back our chef friend prepared a beautiful afternoon lunch.
No post-processing at all, black & white straight outta the camera.

Balhaldie north (A9) seating area. Given that Little Chef has has so many owners with so many different ideas many sites end up sporting lots of bits from different eras. Balhaldie North is no exception. The tables and chairs from the 80s, the lightshades and carpet from the 90s and the downlighters and cream paint from the 00s. Seemed pretty well cared for though.

Opened between 1987 and 1988, Uttoxeter is a great example of the classic Little Chef success formula. A roundabout on a busy long distance route on the outskirts of a town to hit as many customers as possible. Plus, plonking a lodge beside it ensured the two could work together to attract even more. That's not to say that life has always been smooth for Uttoxeter. When then owners Permira put Little Chef up for sale in 2004, Uttoxeter was a number of branches closed to streamline the business only to reopen shortly afterwards under new owners PRG.
In 2013, after Travelodge disposed of some sites, the lodge became JCB House, to be used by plant manufacturer JCB to accommodate workers and visitors to their nearby HQ.
Under Granada in the late 90s the site gained a BK. This has now closed and serves as overspill seating for the restaurant
The site of the Colsterworth Little Chef in 2015
Colsterworth Services opened in 1989 on the Colsterworth roundabout and was built by Motorway Services giant Granada as part of their plans to conquer the A-roads with scaled-down motorway-style sites. Others included Blyth (A1), Musselburgh (A1), Markfield (A50), Saltash (A38), Warminster (A36) and their older site at Monmouth (A40). These each had a Granada Country Kitchen restaurant, shop, small arcade area, lodge and fuel forecourt. In the early 90s, Granada decided to replace the restaurant at all A-road sites, with the exception of Blyth, with AJ's Family Restaurants who it had done a deal with. This gave them a direct rival to Forte's Little Chef brand for the first time. They then added Burger King to all sites.
However, in 1995, Granada gained control of Forte as part of a hostile takeover of the company and, in doing so, got their hands on Little Chef. It then set about severing all ties with AJ's and replaced them with Little Chef at all sites. However, Colsterworth Services proved the exception here. Just to the north of the Colsterworth roundabout were two Happy Eater restaurants (a northbound and a southbound) which Granada had also acquired as part of the Forte deal. Granada decided to keep these and, in order to safeguard their trade, opted not to put a Little Chef into Colsterworth Services, leaving Burger King as the only restaurant option for a few years. The Happy Eaters were then converted to Little Chefs in 1997, a process Forte had started with the Happy Eater brand as Little Chef made more money. However, by 1998 a complete U-turn had been performed and both Little Chefs were closed and a Little Chef restaurant opened in Granada's main Colsterworth Services instead alongside the Burger King.
Granada then merged with Compass Catering in 2000 and subsequently demerged in 2001, leaving Compass with its Catering Division. Compass then set about selling off Little Chef and Travelodge and although it kept ownership of Colsterworth, Little Chef and it's new owners took care of the running.
In 2006, following a successful trial, Coffee Tempo opened at Colsterworth alongside Little Chef and BK. This later became Little Chef Express in 2012.
Today, Colsterworth Little Chef lives on and still has both BK and Little Chef Express sitting alongside it while the site is still owned by Moto Hospitality, the successor to Granada. The Colsterworth Roundabout was removed and replaced by a new junction in 2010 but the services weren't affected by the roadworks
The interior of the Little Chef at Skipton (A59/ A65 junction). This was built in 1985-7 using local stone with this look carried through into the interior of the restaurant. Definitely adds a certain something. Skipton is another example of Forte's bombproof logic for choosing a site. Find a point where two major roads cross, plant a restaurant in a visible location for all routes, if there is a roundabout get it as close to that as you can for easy access. Probably why Skipton is still one of the survivors.
Opened originally in the early to mid 80s as a Happy Eater, Thirsk served the northbound A168 which linked the A1 north of York to the A19: an alternative route north via Teeside. Handily, it was right beside a petrol station too for snaring even more customers. The change to Little Chef came in 93-95 by which time Little Chef's owners Forte also owned the Happy Eater brand and had decided that Little Chef brought in more pennies so much rebranding occurred. In 2003, under Compass Catering's stewardship, the Little Chef was briefly partnered by a Harry Ramsdens in a bid to attract a wider audience, especially in the evening.
The site continued to trade until 2012, by which point Little Chef had passed through the hands of many owners an were now under the control of turnaround company R Capital. They decided that the estate had to be slimmed down and around 70 restaurants were culled with Thirsk one of them. For a bried period it lived on as Mama B's, under the stewardship of the old Little Chef site manager, but sadly the axe fell again by the end of 2013. and today it still lies empty.
