CSX L456-09 with the CSXT #911 Honoring Our First Responders Unit finally takes off at River

The Chesapeake and Ohio James River Subdivision follows the favorable descending river grade of the James River east to Richmond. Some of the earth work required to build the railroad began as the tow path of the failed extension of the James River and Kanawha Canal. To avoid a horseshoe bend in the James near Lyle Virginia, a tunnel was excavated beginning in 1853 to cross the neck of the peninsula in the center of the horseshoe via aqueducts over the river on both ends. The original canal bore required enlargement for the railroad equipment of the period. C&O named the 189 foot bore “Little Tunnel”. Although the bore was enlarged again in 1933, neither linings or portals have been added to the limestone and quartz of Buttons Bluff.

A conductor trainee (he's wearing an orange vest) on CSX rides the front of a locomotive making a switch move in Cayce, South Carolina. The conductor, who is out of sight in this photograph, was very methodical with this young man. He let him throw the switches in the yard and made sure he know to look at the rails and make sure the tracks were lined up the right way before he allowed the train to pass over them.

CSX K637 passes the now gone 392 Automatic with a pair of BN SD70MACs.

CSX CW60AC #602, "The Spirit of Maryland" is seen fresh at Erie on June 23rd 1997. This was a period where AC traction was ushering in a new era on CSX beginning with CW44s and CW60s from GE alongside SD70MACs from EMD. Your humble Flickr Pal had the 602 several times during his CSX career, during happier times for this unit. It now languishes at Waycross GA facing an uncertain fate. CSX 4029 leads a couple of BNSF fatheads on K-021 at CP382 in Riga, NY on the afternoon of February 13, 2021. I don't care for the square cabs on the SD40-3's, but it's better than the fatheads.

A CSX SD50-3 and SD40-2 work CSX's Frontier Yard in Buffalo as the sun makes a brief appearance through the clouds. CSX recently retired all of the SD50's and SD50-2's from it's roster, so the few SD50-3's left are a nice treat to catch in the lead, even if it is just a yard job.

CSXT 2502 leads what I believe was the J731 southbound through Enfield, IL. Back then it was a one train a day operation. Northbound (geographically west) out of Evansville, IN as far as needed and then back to Evansville the next day. This was once the L&N mainline to St. Louis but was downgraded and truncated to New Memphis, IL and then later to Okawville, IL by CSX . The line was then leased to Evansville Western and traffic has picked up substantially since then with the construction of the 12.6 mile spur to the Sugar Camp mine near Akin, IL. and the opening of the White Oak mine near Delafield, IL. along with additional coal traffic interchanged from the NS at Mt. Vernon, IL. The current EVWR local train MCL based out of Mcleansboro is the replacement for the train pictured. Kodachrome Slide scan.

The train is seen here powering Southbound on the CSX W&A Subdivision at Cartersville, GA.
