CSX train W003 stops at CT Junction waiting for a signal before taking the High line to Gest Street.

Getting CSX power on trains was a bit rare so getting one leading was great. The real kick was seeing the helper set working this train in the other post.

A southbound mixed freight passes the shell of the tower at Leipsic, Ohio in June 1988. As the second unit shows, it was CSX by then but the lead GP40 still wears Chessie System paint with C&O lettering. In the spring and early summer of 1988, I spent a lot of time in Lima, Ohio backfilling a spot on a modernization project at the refinery. When I could get out of the plant in daylight, I would typically cruise up and down Rt 65 looking for DT&I trains on the this trackage that they shared but usually found CSX southbounds. They usually had a fleet of southbounds in the afternoon. Leipsic was a crossing of the former B&O between Toledo and Cincinnati and the former NKP mainline.

Nice early November day along the tracks for my lunch break.

Herzog and CSX crews coordinate dropping off a cut of Herzog hoppers from their train at the WSS of Mitchell, IN on the evening of July 25, 2020. Once the shuffle was completed, the CSX crew will head west on the former B&O as far as their hours of service will let them to Milepost 147ish.

Last of the Mohicans

CSX SD70MAC 4566 is one of the last SD70MAC's on the CSX roster to retain its as delivered YN2 "Bright Future" paint scheme. Despite terrible weather and bright skies, I ventured out to get a photo of it for what very well may be the last time I see it in YN2 paint.

I took a gamble on trying to zoom pan it, and managed to get a lucky frame.

Due to a barge hitting the bridge at Decatur, AL there were a ton of reroutes across the south with most of them utilizing the Chattanooga and W&A Subs between Nashville and Atlanta. Here's rerouted Memphis to Savannah intermodal I125 (I925 reroute symbol) cruising through north Georgia near Kingston. It sure felt like old times watching a never ending parade of trains.

CSX train D795 climbs Jacks Mountain near Fairfield, Pa. on it's way to Hagerstown, Md. The train is operating on the former Western Maryland Railway's Dutch line and will reach the summit at Highfield, Md. in a few miles. The train is led by GP40-2 6425 a rare leader for this train that usually gets two wide noise GEs. Taken on 05-2-2020.

3 CSX SD's lead a Rochester-bound coal train past UN tower at the east end of New Castle on a frosty early morning in December 1986. UN tower was so named because it was near the underpass of UnioN road. UN controlled movements in and out of the east end of the yard in New Castle as well as the connection between the B&O's Pittsburgh & Western and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie. It was remoted in November 1995 but was saved by the Beaver Valley Junction chapter of the NRHS who moved it to a nearby park in Mahoningtown. It was cut in half and top and bottom halves were moved by rail. This coal train would take the P&W out of New Castle down to Edineau where it would switch off onto the former BR&P that is now operated by the Buffalo & PIttsburgh.

Q501 accelerates east after waiting for a pair of CN trains at the Wellsboro diamonds. The train on this day was powered by an SD70ACe-ES40DC-AC6000CW trio. Only the Gevo is still rostered by CSX today.

Here is the view looking the other direction off the Koppel Bridge from my previous post. I don't know the full history of this branch, but it once gave the P&LE access to Ellwood City as well as Koppel. The bridge that took the branch to Ellwood City is just visible through the trees in the upper center of the photo. I did hike down from the bridge to JA after getting pics of 1945, and did get a CSX train passing the yard at JA. Maybe I'll post it later today. Koppel, PA on December 29, 1992.
