We're celebrating Christmas in July on the Craftsy Blog! Check out our roundup of Christmas quilting patterns, including this beautiful Christmas tree quilt!
People often associate trains with Christmas even though most Americans have never ridden one. In the late 19th and first half of the 20th century, most Americans travelled and shipped freight by rail, and some of the eariest mechanical toys were trains. As late as the 1950s, toy and model trains were common Christmas presents for most boys and some girls. That changed in the 60s as new mechanical toys were developed, mass marketed on television, and sold for Christmas gifts. Even so, lots of electric trains are still sold for Christmas, and stylized trains show up as decorations meant to recall old toys in the same way that strings of colored electric lights are meant to recall candles used as Christmas tree decorations.
In between various cooking chores, eating dinner, and cleaning up after dinner, I ran my trains through an entire operating session. Not much has changed since last year. Before I can do any serious and realistic scenery, I have to install styrofoam roadbed under all my track so I can enable my mainline to climb up 2 inches in order to elevate my eastbound staging yard over my westbound staging yard. Then I can run more trains and build some mountains, creeks, and forests.
Merry Christmas to all of you, and thanks so much for continuing to follow my work.
Another year is about to end, and my Flickr stream's view count currently stands at 4.99 million: by the time the year is out it will number over 5 million. These two landmarks, and the exciting but frightening sense that a lot is going to change in the coming months - perhaps even more than has changed in the past year - have caused me to reflect on all kinds of things: friends, family, money, age, health, my personal work, my professional work... life and how it ought to be lived.
I hope you are all having a wonderful day!

Christmas is a religious commemoration of the #Nativity - the birth of our Lord #JesusChrist. In today's context, Christmas is also a celebration of united families and friends to give presents, smiles, and hopes to everyone.
