In winter, Amsterdammers watch the falling thermometer readings with the same focus as people in Aspen and Chamonix. When the temperature drops low enough for long enough, the lakes and the canals in Amsterdam become sparkling highways for the skaters. Little kiosks are set up on the ice to dispense heart-warming liqueurs. I really love this part of our culture. Almost everyone, young or old, likes to skate and is smiling and friendly. The last days the cold was enough for the canals to freeze over a rare occasion. Amsterdammers sharpen their blades and hit the ice. On the 14th of Februari 2021, the first people started skating on the canals of Amsterdam. A lovely view of children skating on the Bloemgracht canal. Who knows times of Hendrick Avercamp are coming back this year. Avercamp was the first Dutch artist to specialize in paintings of winter landscapes featuring people enjoying the ice. Some 400 years on, our image of life in the harsh winters of the Golden Age is still dominated by Avercamp’s ice scenes with their splendid narrative details of couples skating, children pelting each other with snowballs and unwary individuals falling through the ice.
Photo of the Bloemgracht canal in Amsterdam near the Wester church. As temperatures plunge across Europe, many are cursing the cold. But not in the Netherlands. There, many are hoping for further frigid conditions. It is so cold in the Dutch city that some canals have frozen over, turning them into a winter wonderland for skaters. This weekend we could ice skate even on some canals of Amsterdam. We had three fantastic days of skating.
Na 3 jaar konden de Jordanezen eindelijk de ijzers weer onderbinden. Op 14 februari 2021 nog geen ideale condities want je kon nog niet onder alle bruggen schaatsen. Op de Bloemgracht is het ijs net dik genoeg, er kan best aardig geschaatst worden, maar ook op de Keizersgracht. De grachten eindelijk bevroren en de adem komt in kleine grijze pufjes uit mijn mond. Handen op de rug. Rustig ademen. Ik geniet van het geluid van de ijzers over het ijs, sneeuw en een prachtige gezicht op de Amsterdamse grachtenpanden. Wie had dat nu gedacht, schaatsen in februari in Amsterdam. Wie even wegdenkt kan zich vandaag in Hendrick Avercamps wereld wanen. Als eerste Amsterdamse kunstenaar uit de 17de eeuw specialiseerde hij zich in het schilderen van winterlandschappen met ijspret. Ons beeld van het leven in de strenge winters in de Gouden Eeuw wordt na 400 jaar nog altijd bepaald door Avercamps ijsgezichten met prachtige verhalende details van schaatsende paartjes, kinderen die elkaar bekogelen met sneeuwballen of een man die door het ijs zakt. In de middag is er inderdaad Anno 2021 iemand door het ijs gezakt. Morgen gaat het helaas weer dooien. Het waren drie fantastische schaatsdagen in 2021. "Constructed in 1812 by local mechanic George Olney, the Moffett Mill offers a rare glimpse of the early American machine shop. The Moffett Mill was among the first mills in the area to have new metal-working technology including a metal lathe and drill press. In the early 1800s, Olney made tools and repaired vital machine parts for the other mills along Great Road, including his own thread mill at the pond in Lincoln Woods, Stephen Smith’s Butterfly Mill, and Captain Wilbur Kelly’s mill at Old Ashton. Arnold Moffett purchased the mill in 1850, replacing the breast-style waterwheel with a more modern, water-driven iron turbine. He expanded into furniture making and wagon building. At the time of the Civil War, the mill’s second floor housed braiding machines used to produce laces for shoes and corsets. By 1880, gristmill orders accounted for a large share of the Moffetts’ business, and a sawmill produced boards and wooden boxes for customers in the area. By the turn of the century, the mill closed and the building abandoned. In 2000, the Moffett Mill was stabilized and restored, with the original equipment still intact. Today, the mill is open for occasional public viewing under the stewardship of the Friends of Hearthside."
Zwischen Hyères und Saint Tropez erstreckt sich am Mittelmeer das Küstengebirge "Massif des Maures", eine im Vergleich zur lebhaften Küste ruhige und einsame bewaldete Gegend, die man zu Fuß oder mit dem Rad schön erkunden kann. Wir waren mit dem Rad auf der Route des Crêtes (Forststraße) oberhalb von Bormes les Mimosas unterwegs. Der Blick aus ca. 400 m Höhe aufs Mittelmeer ist bei sonnigem Wetter wie heute herrlich.

I got wet on this one : )
Op 30 december 2021 reed RFO zoals gewoonlijk de Ostrava-kolentrein vanuit de Maasvlakte naar Bad Bentheim. Dit keer werd de tractie echter niet geleverd door een 1800, maar door de 193 734 in ELL kleuren.
Normaal is dit niet zo'n interessante locomotief, maar de combinatie met de bruine Falns'en is erg fraai. Daarom besloot ik met een vriend richting de Gooikersdijk, tussen Colmschate en Bathmen te fietsen.
Hier komt RFO 193 734 met een sleep TSSK Falns'en door Deventer, onderweg richting Bad Bentheim.

Il y a plus d'un an et demi maintenant, je suis allé à la Gare de Miramas pour faire quelques photos histoire de faire passer le temps, après une courte accalmie, l'annonce de la gare dit qu'un train sur la voie 2 va passer, après quelques minutes d'attente, je m'attendais à un FRET en provenance de Fos, quand soudain le train en question se montra, c'était donc en étant scotché que la BB26230 blasonnée aux armes d'Agen, s'arrête sur la voie 2 pour relève conducteur, mon Nikon était prêt à sortir son gros engin 70-300 en voyant cette belle béton qui a l'habitude de prendre l'air de la Côte d'Azur...
Après avoir totalement arrêté le train avec précision, le mécano en provenance de Marseille (à droite), profite d'échanger avec son collègue, durant ce temps, j'en ai profité pour immortaliser ce moment : c'était donc avant son départ pour la Maurienne dans une ambiance que j'adore, que la BB26230 a eu droit à un shooting rarissime alors qu'elle assurait en ce 27 octobre 2021, le Train N°75814, connu sous le nom d'Alumine, train mythique du coin qui relie le Port de Marseille à Saint Jean de Maurienne avec ses fameux wagons TRIMET.

Edifici encarregat per Pere Serra a l'arquitecte Josep Puig i Cadafalch, construït entre 1903 i 1908. Pere Serra mai no el va habitar, primer va ser un col·legi de monges i després la seu de la Diputació de Barcelona. Del projecte original se'n conserven dues ales que formen un angle, unides per una torre semicircular. A la façana de la Rambla de Catalunya hi ha una reproducció de la porta de la Casa Gralla, edifici enderrocat el 1856.
Stagecoach Bluebird Volvo B9TL East Lancs Olympus 16948 SY07CUX "Chuggy" sits at the lights on Union Street at Crown Street while operating a Service X7 from Aberdeen Bus Station to Stonehaven, Barclay Street.
16948 is one of 4 B9TLs in the Bluebird fleet. All 4 were built in 2006 and delivered to Rapsons in early 2007 for the relaunch of the JET 11 between Inverness and Inverness Airport, they transferred to Stagecoach when the Rapsons business was sold off and have migrated multiple times between Highland, West Scotland and Bluebird. They've been unpopular buses their entire lives being plagued with poor reliability and structural issues as early as 2009/10, despite this they've beaten the odds and limped on for over a decade.
16948 is locally known as "Chuggy" due to it's notably rough running engine, it along with sister bus 16945 come with their own warning/alert system in the form of cooling fan that can be heard from many many miles away. One night early this year 16945 was allocated to an evening duty on 59 which lead to Stagecoach receiving a Twitter complaint about the sheer racket it makes asking if the driver could "change up a gear"...
