With the introduction of the 550 Maranello in 1996, Ferrari returned to its tradition of building front-engined V12 sports cars, resurrecting a line that had remained dormant since the demise of the 365 GTB/4 'Daytona' in 1974. Car magazine was understandably enthusiastic: 'The Maranello needs no excuses: it is right-minded, a return to traditional values, albeit values and standards that tower high above those set by the Daytona when it shuffled off to extinction a quarter of a century ago.'
The heart of any Ferrari is its engine, and the 550 Maranello's 48-valve, 5.5-litre V12 developed 485bhp at 7,000rpm, some 100-or-so horsepower more than the Daytona's. Ferrari had discovered long ago that providing optimum balance in a front-engined sports car necessitated the use of a rear transaxle, and the Maranello's came with six speeds. The power train was housed in a tubular steel chassis, to which was attached aluminium coachwork, while the all-independent suspension incorporated dual-mode (normal/sports) damping, switch-selectable by the driver, which was complemented by speed-sensitive power-assisted steering.
Styled by Pininfarina like its illustrious 'Daytona' predecessor, the 550 Maranello was similarly proportioned, adopting the classical combination of long bonnet, small cabin and truncated tail. The body's aerodynamics were developed in the wind tunnel where hours of testing ensured that the minimum of drag was combined with constant downforce regardless of set up, an important consideration in a 320km/h road car. Styling details such as the bonnet air scoop and hot air outlets behind the front wheelarches recalled the great competizione Ferraris of the past, in particular the immortal 250 GTO, while the tail incorporated Ferrari's characteristic twin circular lights. Featuring a luxuriously appointed leather interior, this new generation Gran Turismo recalled and honoured its iconic forebears with aplomb.
In 2002, the 550 Maranello was extensively refreshed and updated to create the 575M ('Modificata'), which featured subtle styling refinements and a further upgraded interior together with numerous mechanical improvements. For the 575M, engine displacement grew to 5,748cc and maximum power to 515bhp, while transmitting it to the ground was a new six-speed 'paddle shift' semi-automatic gearbox, a technology that Ferrari had developed in Formula 1. The brakes were up-rated as well, together with the suspension, which now featured the adaptive damping developed on the Ferrari Enzo supercar.
In 2004, Ferrari released a limited run of 559 examples of a striking and innovative convertible, the Superamerica. Drawing its name from the iconic Pininfarina designed Lampredi V12-powered GT cars of the 1950s and '60s, the 199mph 575M Superamerica retained the coupé's mechanicals together with its general design while featuring a unique pivoting photo-chromic roof.
The work of Pininfarina's chief stylist Leonardo Fioravanti, creator of the legendary 365 GTB/4 'Daytona', it was the first roof of its kind ever fitted to a production car, and was built using a carbon fibre frame integrated with electro-chromatic glass. The transparency of the glass could be adjusted from within the cabin to transmit varying amounts of light, letting in approximately the same amount of light as a conventional glass sunroof at its lightest setting and only 1% of the sun's rays at its darkest. With the press of a button, the Superamerica can be transformed into a convertible, with the roof rotating back to rest flush with the boot lid in just 10 seconds.
Optional on the Superamerica at the point of order was the 'Handling GTC' upgrade package. Developed for the Ferrari 575 GT Competizione Berlinetta, a model produced specifically for the FIA GT and GrandAm championships, this package is considered to be the most desirable option for the 575 model range as it includes carbon-ceramic brake discs with racing pads and special callipers; 19" wheels; stiffer suspension in 'Sport' mode; a titanium racing exhaust; and 'faster' calibration for the steering rack, greatly enhancing the performance of this already capable supercar. It is estimated that around 40% of Superamericas were built with this package.
This supremely well specified left-hand drive Superamerica was built by special order after its owner had visited Maranello. Its special features include a black instrument panel back-plate (instead of yellow/red); full carbon boot interior panel (as per the Geneva Show car, later changed for series production to less expensive felt); interior carbon option, but retaining leather side panels; fuel cap in body colour rather than the stock aluminium; Schedoni bespoke luggage set; and several other interior options.
Finished in Grigio Nürburgring with Burgundy interior, the Superamerica was first registered in Italy on 22nd December 2005 and later on in the UK where it has been fitted with UK-specification lights and instrument cluster (originals available).
It was previously registered in the UK and was fitted with UK-specification lights and instrument cluster (originals available) as these have now been replaced by EU correct units in km/h. The odometer reading when the unit was changed was circa 13,000 kilometres; the replacement odometer in miles comes with the car. Currently the odometer reads just over 15,000 kilometres whereas the actual mileage is believed to be just over 20.000 kilometres from new (including the 3000 miles it has done with UK-instruments).
Accident-free, the car is offered with and old UK V5C registration document, copy of the current Luxembourg registration document (cancelled in April 2018), car cover, original luggage set, toolkit, Ferrari battery charger, certificate of conformity and an extended warranty for the roof. It has been serviced exclusively by official Ferrari agents: Rosso Corsa (Milan), Kessler (Lugano) and Bob Houghton (UK).
The 575M Superamerica has become one of the most highly coveted Ferraris of recent times thanks to its rarity, uniquely innovative design, and the exhilarating driving experience that can only be had behind the wheel of one of these modern Ferrari V12 roadsters. It is generally accepted that the Superamerica's semi-automatic transmission did not offer the most satisfying driving experience, which only makes this ultra rare example with its six-speed manual gearbox all the more desirable. We took the road across Rannoch Moor as we headed between Stirling and Fort Augustus and it seemed wrong not to stop at this popular roadside location of Loch Ba/Lochan na-h Achlaise. The water level was particularly low so I chose a lower viewpoint (to hide some of the exposed banks) and incorporated this small group of bluebells for a splash of colour amongst the greens.
(I had hoped to make a second stop at Buachaille Etive Mòr but found the small parking area which usually holds 4-5 cars was completely filled by 2 camper vans, 1 with an awning and campsite attached.....)

Le transfert prévu de la locomotive BB Ge 4/4 81 de Landquart à Pontresina a été interrompu à Chur en raison de perturbations de signalisation au passage de la machine qui se laissait remorquer sans autres problèmes.
La Ge 4/4 81 est poussée dans le dépôt RhB de Chur pour tenter d'identifier la cause du problème.

CN 8961 leading, pulling a mixed train of mostly forestry freight south past this steel clad ex-ALBERTA WHEAT POOL (Elevator No. 2) in St Albert this morning. Most of the freight was labeled from the West Fraser and Millar Western lumber mills located in Whitecourt, Alta.
The steel clad elevator was restored to its colours as it was in 1989 when it ceased operation as a railway point for the export of grain.
It was erected in 1906 by the Brackman Kerr Milling Co.
According to the Alberta Register of Historic Places, it was owned by several companies:

Warnemünde maritim – bereits am Nachmittag des 04.08.2021 traf als Gast der Hanse Sail 2021 das polnische Segelschulschiff „Dar Młodzieży“ ein und machte an der Warnemünder Mittelmole fest. Der 109 Meter lange Großsegler ist als Vollschiff getakelt und wurde 1982 in Dienst gestellt. Auf dem Schiff werden angehende Offiziere der polnischen Handelsflotte ausgebildet – Besatzungsstärke 214. Die auf der Danziger Werft gebauten Schwesterschiffe der „Dar Młodzieży“ sind „Pallada“ (Russland), „Khersones“ (Russland), „Druschba“ (Ukraine), „Mir“ (Russland) und „Nadeschda“ (Russland).
Hoffentlich kann ich in den nächsten Tagen das Schiff auch unter Segeln fotografieren.

Sous la neige, la Re 421 391, en compagnie de la Re 421 384, d'autres Re 421 et de Re 430, attend depuis décembre 2020 sa démolition par l'entreprise Thommen à Kaiseraugst.
Les Re 421, aptes à circuler en Allemagne, sont issues de la transformation de 26 des Re 4/4" de la dernière série 11371...11397, sauf la 11382 déclassée plus tôt, livrées en 1984-1985, encore en vert pour les six premières unités, puis rouges à la livraison.
Cinq unités ont pu être revendues:
Les 421 373 et 421 381 à Widmer Rail Services WRSCH.
La 421 374 à Swiss Rail Traffic SRTAG.
Les 421 387 et 421 393 à International Rolling Stock Investment IRSI.
Les Re 430 comptaient 21 unités aux CFF. Elles disposent d'une autre démultiplication que les Re 4/4" qui réduisait leur vitesse à 125 km/h mais augmentait la force de traction pour les trains marchandises.
Les Re 4/4''' 11351-11370 ont commencé leur carrière en UM au Gotthard au début des années 70. La 11350 ex-SOB 41 a été acquise plus tard.
Les CFF retirent aussi progressivement du service les Re 420 de la première série.
Bien que ces machines, équipées d'un seul pantographe, soient plus anciennes, les CFF espèrent en revendre une grande partie, au prix d'au moins CHF 450000.- l'unité.
Dans cet espoir, les machines Re 4/4" 11129, 11131 et 11140 ont été garées au dépôt OeBB de Balsthal.

We noteren april 2021. Hoewel we normaal tijdens deze maand uitkijken richting hogere temperaturen, was dit alleszins niet het geval voor de eerste week van april. Na een week met 20 graden was de week nadien het tegenovergestelde van toepassing. Sneeuw, veel regen en soms zelfs hagel. Op de foto kan je zien dat er zomaar een grote 10 centimeter sneeuw lag! Ik had verlof, dus wilde ik foto's gaan trekken langs lijn 36, in de hoop de combinatie sneeuw en zon vast te kunnen leggen.

Wegens de installatie van ETCS in de locomotieven Class 66 in België, durven de operatoren wel eens te schuiven met hun locomotieven. Omdat zo een ETCS-installatie enige tijd duurt, zijn de firma's dan ook de loc voor enkele dagen/weken kwijt. Dit tijdelijk tekort moet telkens opgevuld worden, want de treinen moeten uiteraard blijven rijden. Voor de fotografen brengt dit altijd wat variatie mee, wat ook wel welkom is! Zo is er sinds 10 dagen een 'nieuwe' class 66 te zien in België, met name de oranje 561-04 van de Britse firma Freightliner. Deze locomotief rijdt nu tijdelijk voor Crossrail, maar in een vorig leven reed deze voor onder andere Rotterdam Rail Feeding.

De eerste ritten van Crossrails tijdelijke aanwinst waren tussen Aken (D) en Bierset gepland. Helaas liep het tijdens de ochtend van 6 april even mis. De oranje krachtpatser begaf het echter op het grensbaanvak tussen Aken (D) en Montzen. De zware containertrein die de loc bijhad, bleek iets te zwaar te zijn. Een machinist van RTB Cargo moest met zijn locomotief de trein opduwen tot de bundel van Montzen. Het betrof een China-trein te zijn, en die trein moest nog in Bierset geraken. Na 5 uur stilstand kwam bericht binnen dat de rode DE6314 de trein tot Bierset zou rijden, met de 561-04 op sleep! Er lag sneeuw in Luik, dus twijfelde ik geen seconde en sprong ik de auto in richting Voroux, waar de trein al duwend zou vertrekken richting de Terminal van Bierset.

Na een groot uur rijden in barre omstandigheden, kwam ik aan te Voroux. Crossrail was Bressoux al voorbij, dus té lang zou het niet meer duren. Omdat het al een kwartier lang sneeuwde, moest ik me niet aan te trekken aan welke kant de zon stond. De doorrit werd toegelaten tot het bundeltje van Voroux. Het stopte met sneeuwen en ik keer achter me... dat meen je niet! Een gigantische opklaring zou me een heuse tegenlichtopname bezorgen. Zo snel als ik kon sprong ik van mijn ladder en spurtte ik naar het perron van Voroux, waar de zon wél goed stond. Ik was gelukkig mooi op tijd, en klapte mijn ladder meteen uit. Stress voor een fotowolk was er niet en zo was mijn dag meteen geslaagd met deze foto! Nadien werd nog geprobeerd om een foto nabij de terminal zelf te nemen, wat helaas niet lukte omdat de trein het minst ideale spoor werd opgeduwd.
Tijdens één van de schaarse opklaringen komen Crossrail DE6314 en gehuurde Freightliner 561-04 Voroux binnen met een ellenlange containertrein uit het Chinese Zhengzou. Na een rit van 17 dagen is de trein bijna aangekomen op zijn eindbestemming. Nog één opduwbeweging en de honderden internetaankopen kunnen gelost worden, met een vertraging van zowat 7 uur.

I love tiramisu & will have it when available on he menu. This version did not appeal to me. A good tiramisu should be able to satisfy on it own, does not need anything more. The chef did some very nice versions of the other food that we had. [collaborative photo with Eugene Marangoni]
The 2021 fishing season got off to a great start today when I caught this gorgeous green sunfish. Not that this was an exceptional feat as green sunfish are undoubtedly one of the easiest fish to catch here in the Midwest and thus many anglers turn their noses up at them but if you're a young kid just learning how to fish they're as good as gold. I guess I never grew up as I still get a thrill when I hold one in my hand like this. In fact, the first fish I ever caught could well have been a green sunfish, possibly even pulled from this very same pond over 60 years ago now.

Antwerp Zoo (Dutch: ZOO Antwerpen) is a zoo in the centre of Antwerp, Belgium, located next to the Antwerpen-Centraal railway station. It is the oldest animal park in the country, and one of the oldest in the world, established on 21 July 1843.
The speckled pigeon (Columba guinea), or (African) rock pigeon, is a pigeon that is a resident breeding bird in much of Africa south of the Sahara. It is a common and widespread species in open habitats over much of its range, although there are sizable gaps in its distribution. It is sometimes referred to as a Guinea Pigeon due to its similar coloring to some species of guineafowl.
