Le Mara (aussi dit "lièvre de Patagonie") est endémique d'Argentine et classé dans la Liste rouge de l'UICN comme « quasi menacé ». Après le capybara et les castors, c'est le troisième plus gros rongeur vivant. Le mara est l'un des rares mammifères restant toute sa vie en couple monogame. L'un des partenaires guette le danger, pendant que l'autre mange. Les couples ont un terrier commun pour tous leurs petits, nourris chaque jour par leurs parents respectifs. Avec ses allures de lapin le mara est en fait plus proche de la souris et il se reproduit bien... ce qui n'est pas sans poser quelques soucis dans un zoo !

On Tuesday 1st March 2021, Go-Coach crewed Abellio London 3406 LC71 KWO so that it could be used in conjunction with a Fastrack / Cardiff University education day. It arrived at Swanley Garage around lunchtime from Walworth Garage and proceeded to Bluewater The Village where it remained until the talk was over and took the students on a tour over parts of the Fastrack network before returning to Bluewater the vehicle then returned to Walworth Garage via Swanley.

Enjoying these majestic views while deep in the woods late this afternoon. It's nice to be away from the city life once in a while. This was during me and my cousin's short adventure to the Land of Medicine Buddha around Soquel, CA. We went late since I had to wait ‘til she got off work. After trekking thru winding roads, we reached the place just before 4 p.m. We hiked a bit on the trail (started from the Land of Medicine Buddha redwood sign), taking in the majestic redwoods and views along the way. Due to time constraints, we quickly headed back and explored just around the vicinity, checking out the various displays, prayer wheels and whatnot. We then left the place shortly before 6 p.m., and grabbed dinner at a Dairy Queen place and ate it at Capitola Beach. It was a brief but nice outing to enjoy the outdoors. ‘Til next time, safe travels! (Outing taken place late Thursday, September 23, 2021)

Storm Darcy was a storm that hit parts of Western Europe from February 7, 2021. In the Netherlands, Belgium, the east of the United Kingdom and parts of the north and west of Germany, strong winds were accompanied by drifting snow, creating snow dunes. The last heavy snowstorm in Amsterdam dates from 1985. There is something very beautiful about Amsterdam in the winter. It snowed for the second time this winter in Amsterdam. Because the temperature was -4 degrees Celsius the snow stayed. The real feel temperature was -11 degrees Celsius cause there was a strong wind and drifting snow. It got more than a few centimeters of snow. The best advice is to stay indoors and turn the stove up a bit. Or of course to go outside to take some nice pictures. The snow is a rare highlight in these February dark days, especially when you have small children. It is quite difficult to come up with something fun in these Covid-19 lock-down days. After a while, sitting indoors becomes quite monotonous for such a toddler. This is a welcome change. The snow also provides a lot of fun for children and adults here in Amsterdam. Snowball fight, make snowmen, go sledding and adults go cross-country skiing. All fun activities that people do in this beautiful snowy world.

Vanmorgen 7 februari werd ik wakker en zag Amsterdam bedekt met een laag verse sneeuw. Sneeuwstorm Darcy raast over Amsterdam. De harde wind gepaard met driftsneeuw, waardoor er sneeuwduinen ontstaan. De laatste hevige sneeuwstorm in Amsterdam dateert van 1985. De sneeuw die vannacht viel bedekte de wereld om ons heen wit en prachtig. Ik heb mijn camera gepakt en op pad gegaan in m'n buurtje. Ik geniet van het geluid van knarsende sneeuw onder mijn schoenen en het prachtige gezicht op de Amsterdamse grachtenpanden. Het is min vier graden en het blijft vandaag de hele dag sneeuwen. Met een stevige wind is de gevoelstemperatuur zelf -11 graden. Mijn handschoenen en m'n sjaal houden mij warm genoeg. Er is iets heel moois over Amsterdam in de winter. Het beste advies is dan maar om lekker binnen te blijven en de kachel iets hoger te zetten. Of natuurlijk even naar buiten te gaan om wat mooie plaatjes te schieten. In Amsterdam heeft het nu voor de tweede keer deze winter gesneeuwd. Bij deze temperatuur blijft de sneeuw liggen. Er is meer dan enkele centimeters sneeuw gevallen. De sneeuw is een zeldzaam hoogtepunt in deze donkere dagen in februari, vooral als je kleine kinderen hebt. Het is best moeilijk om iets leuks te bedenken in deze Covid-19 lockdown-dagen. Binnen zitten wordt na een tijdje behoorlijk eentonig voor zo'n peuter. Dit is een welkome afwisseling. De sneeuw zorgt ook voor veel plezier voor kinderen maar ook voor volwassenen. Sneeuwballengevecht, sneeuwpoppen maken, langlaufen of rodelen. Allemaal leuke activiteiten die mensen doen in deze prachtige besneeuwde wereld. Wie even wegdenkt, waant zich vandaag in de wereld van Hendrick Avercamp.

Beetje bij beetje beginnen de leuke foto's met zon uit 2021 op te raken. Ik heb nog wel een voorraadje liggen, maar inmiddels ben ik toch wel bij de laatste echte zonnige foto van het uitstapje in de regio van Leipzig aanbeland wat ook niet heel moeilijk was met de matige hoeveelheid zon die we daar kregen. Ook deze foto werd gemaakt op de namiddag van 20 augustus wat samen met de eerste en laatste dag van ons bezoek aan de regio de meest zonnige periode was, zij het niet dat de eerste en laatste dag bijna geen enkele foto werd gemaakt doordat er op een enkele trein na, niks reed. Op deze namiddag van 20 augustus was het eigenlijk ook wel flink bewolkt maar hadden we gewoon veel geluk dat de zon er regelmatig tussendoor wist te schijnen en zodoende kon een trein van HSL onder een dreigende wolkenlucht gefotografeerd worden.
Het is 17:01 als de HSL 186 299 met een onbekend gebleven keteltrein de vier Hollanders te Schkeuditz passeert onderweg vanuit Tsjechië richting Halle. Naast de matige hoeveelheid aan zonplaatjes werden deze trip nog wel een aantal fraaie treinen op de bewolkte dagen gefotografeerd waarvan een enkeling nog binnenkort online zal komen...

[1] The last time I visited the top of the Tour Eiffel was way before I started to work for Thalys (before 2001), so it was about time.
[2] The compulsion to visit the top of the Tour Eiffel was reinforced by the fact that Invader installed PA_1431 on the top at a height of 281 meters.
Invader: Hiding up in the clouds, PA_1431 is the highest space invader ever placed in Paris. It has landed at the 7th of November 2019 on the top of the Eiffel Tower where it enjoys the great view!

Me and my mom painted her summer house in August of 2021 and step one was cleaning it.
But of course I couldn't just do that - step .5 became shooting this lovely (and small) tortrix moth on the side of the house before chasing it off so I could proceed with the cleaning.
I had some help figuring out the species here, and it turns out to be a chestnut tortrix (Cydia splendana). It is also known as the acorn moth (though that name is used for a different species in North America). Given that the house is surrounded by several really large oaks and zero chestnuts, I'm figuring this one was here for the acorns.
Since it stayed perfectly still and was at pretty much eye level, I had time to take lots of shots so this is a six-exposure focus stack compiled using Zerene Stacker.
The magnification level here is 3.9:1 which sounds a lot - but just how close is it? Well, when you know the level of magnification, it is actually quite simple to calculate the size of the subject so I decided to measure the eye. It turns out the diameter of one of those green eyes is no more than 600 microns - or .6 mm! (That's about 1/40th of an inch for those of you who use freedom units.) Personally, I'm absolutely elated that I can capture such small details so well now.

In Manual mode, Live-view, Delayed Exposure, LENR and of course remote shutter release.
This is where the Nikon D800E shines, on tripod and no touching of the shutter button even! The D800E long exposure files are very clean, handheld or at high ISO unfortunately is a very different story.
Processed from RAW and edited.
Fortunately shot in RAW as I've gotten better at editing since years ago when this shot was 1st taken.

Op 28 oktober 2021 wist ik mijn eerste zonfoto van de 186 252 "Modal Shift" te maken in Molenstede. We zien hem hier samen met de 186 346 en de brammentrein uit Genk naar Châtelet een hele bende fotografen passeren op de bekende stek in Molenstede.

It is with a very heavy heart that we have to announce that yesterday evening our handsome boy Colin went to sleep for the last time.
Colin, you were such a wonderful dog, despite forever scavenging food and getting us into trouble. You were so photogenic too. You were such a good-looking lad and you would sit ever so patiently while I took photo after photo. It already feels too open without you. It feels weird not having you sit there, pawing for attention. It feels weird not having a shadow every time I go into the kitchen. Colin, we miss you more than you will ever know and love you even more than that.
