L’abbazia cistercense di San Galgano costituisce l’espressione più autorevole in Italia dello stile gotico-cistercense.
La la vita dell’abbazia fu relativamente breve. Già nel Trecento una carestia (1329) e la successiva epidemia di peste (1348) segnarono il declino di questo insediamento monastico. Nella metà del XVI secolo cominciò materialmente la fine dell’abbazia quando venne venduta la copertura in piombo. Alla fine del ‘700 un fulmine esplode sul campanile, crollano le ultime volte del tetto e arriva il definitivo abbandono, nonché la sconsacrazione.
In realtà cominciava la storia dell’abbazia che possiamo ammirare oggi. Non ci sono più i monaci, non si recitano rosari, non c’è più un altare ma la sua mistica solitudine è impregnata di una spiritualità trasparente come il suo tetto di cielo. Nell’abbazia non c’è religione ma un forte senso religioso.
Nato a Chiusdino nel 1148, Galgano era un giovane di una nobile famiglia del luogo, amante dell'avventura e della vita senza regole. Secondo la leggenda fu visitato in sogno dall'arcangelo Michele che lo convertì. Tra la disperazione della madre e della fidanzata Polissena e lo scherno degli altri cavalieri, conficcò profondamente la sua spada nella roccia così da realizzare un croce con l'elsa. Si racconta anche che il diavolo, tentando di smantellare quella fede divenuta così salda, inviò tre uomini per distruggere la spada in tre pezzi. Galgano, addolorato, si mise a pregare tentando di ricomporre l'arma che, miracolosamente, si rinsaldò.
The Abbey of San Galgano is the most important example of the Gothic-Cistercianc style in Italy. The abbey had a short life. In the fourteenth century, a famine (1329) and the following outbreak of plague (1348) marked the decline of this monastic settlement.
The end of the abbey began in the mid-sixteenth century when its lead cover was sold. At the end of the 18th-century lightning struck the bell tower, the vaults that were still intact collapsed and the Abbey was definitively abandoned and also deconsecrated. In fact, from that moment started the history of the Abbey we can see today. There isn’t any monk, no rosary is told, there isn’t the altar, but the mystic solitude of the Abbey is imbued with spirituality, clear as the sky it has as its roof. In the Abbey, there isn’t religion but a strong religious sense.
Born in 1148 in Chiusdino, Galgano was a young man from a noble family, a lover of adventure and of life without rules. According to the legend he was visited in a dream by Archangel Michael and converted. Among the despair of his mother and girlfriend Polyxena and mockery of other riders, he stuck his sword deep in the rock in order to achieve a cross with the hilt. The legend also said that the devil, trying to dismantle his strong faith, sent three men to destroy the sword into three pieces. Galgano, sorrowful, began to pray and the weapon, miraculously, was repaired.

2021 Thomas C2: Today’s visit to wantagh park brought along five C2s from EBT to haul the majority of campers from Camps R Us Bellmore location here for swimming. Four 2020s and this 2021 all powered by Detroit DD5s made the trip
Back to planes! This beautifully elegant aircraft was built to take part in the England to Australia air race of 1934, which it won. Five aircraft of this design were ever built. 2nd place in the race went to the Douglas DC-2, the improved DC-3 version of which was built in the thousands. Hundreds are still flying today. Tortoise and hare, perhaps.

What was an Epic day of Storm and Sky on the Eastern Plains of Colorado.
We had a late start to get to our destination of Goodland Kansas that afternoon. Though with that said we did see one Landspout / Tornado just to the south of Burlington Colorado. Of couse we would have luv'd to see some of the naders about 100 miles to our west but we didn't plan this one out correctly to do so.
Bumped into Legendary storm chaster Danial Shaw from Down Under... as he pulled up next to us shortly after we got there. I pretty sure he caught what we could see south of Burlington up close and personal.
Storm went outflow dominate as it squeezed its way into northwest Kansas. We ended this days chase between St. Francis and Bird City Kansas.

Several Elephant herds came to drink near a bridge across a river in Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa.
We had a great time observing their interaction especially as there were calfs of different ages.

A day after the Darcy blizzard, moving around by bicycle was not that easy. But because there were no trams on this Monday, it was often the only way to move through the city.

Watergraafsmeer
The Watergraafsmeer is a polder in the Netherlands. It was reclaimed in 1629. In the 17th and 18th centuries, there were many buitenplaatsen in the Watergraafsmeer, though nowadays only one, Frankendael, remains.
Since 1921, the Watergraafsmeer is part of the city of Amsterdam and its rural character has all but disappeared. It is located in the borough of Amsterdam-Oost. The most important streets in the Watergraafsmeer are the Middenweg and the Kruislaan.

Having just left Rise Hill Tunnel Ex LNER A3 60103 "Flying Scotsman" passes the old Plate Layers hut at Ingshead as she heads towards Carlisle on a beautiful December 18th 2021.
101003 van Train Charter Services (ex-NS 1775) trok op 23 april 2021 een lege ketelwagentrein voor ammoniakvervoer van Lineas van Kijfhoek naar Sittard, waarvandaan het met dieseltractie verder ging naar Geleen Lutterade. De foto toont de trein ten zuiden van Dordrecht.
We reden terug naar Wernfeld waar de zon inmiddels over het spoor gedraaid was. Aangezien de TX Logistik 193 878 een dag eerder richting het noorden was gegaan zou deze op 21 juli 2021 weer richting het zuiden gaan.
Voordat TX Logistik zou passeren kwam eerst de Henkelzug van BayernBahn. Met de 140 432 op kop komt trein 59945 langs Wernfeld onderweg vanuit Langenfeld naar Wassertrüderingen.
