As we headed out for a walk along the south shore of False Creek we encountered this man soaking up some early morning rays at the east end of the creek.

A brick wall that used to be part of a tool shed in Vancouver's Strathcona neighbourhood Cottonwood Garden is now a mural painted by local youth sponsored by Red Fox Healthy Living Society & Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA).

Red Fox & EYA bring youth between the ages of 15-19 together for environmental stewardship volunteer work and recreation and cultural activities.

In Vancouver youth between the ages of 15-19 who are Indigenous, racialized, living with a disability or LGBTQ2+ make up the core of the group.

The Youth Garden is located in the south-east corner of the Cottonwood Community Garden.

Before Red Fox & EYA took it on, the Youth Garden was an urban wasteland, with 10 foot high blackberrys and lots of rubbish.

It is now part of an urban green spaces maintained and improved by the youth.

The Youth Garden includes a plant medicine garden, this youth-designed and painted mural, and wildlife habitat areas.

The Youth Garden is one of EYA’s core outdoor learning spaces for experiential, hands-on nature education in the inner city.

Finally a little light on a morning I went to the Ravines to photograph some birds, Lee and I walked around for a bit hearing a lot of bird sounds but not seeing much. We were about to split up and go our own way when we spotted a couple Pileated Woodpeckers along the walkway. We took a few shots and then they took off as people came walking our way.

So we decided it was time to leave and Lee went one way and I other way. I walked maybe 20 yards and found the two woodpeckers climbing up and down on this tree. They stayed there for about 10 minutes until someone came down the trail again. I headed for my car only to find the two Pileated Woodpeckers close to my car, I ended up staying almost another 45 minutes photographing birds.

Eagle nest news.....after 60 mile an hour winds Saturday I am happy to report that the nest is still standing. A well constructed nest, nicely done eagles.

At the west end of pedestrian Calle Regina at Calle Bolivar is Templo de Regina Coeli, a Roman Catholic church and convent built in the mid-1600's. The church has a beautiful, gilded altarpiece.

Although the property has some monastic sobriety, the altarpieces and paintings from the chapel, are of interest.

It was a property of the nuns of the Conception in the colonial era in Mexico. In 1863 the nuns were defrocked and the property nationalized.

In 1867, President Juárez gave the property to the army. The last owner was Concepción Béistegui who modified the place to become a hospital.

When Porfirio Díaz held power, part of the former convent was used as a hospital - the Concepción Béistegui Hospital , another part was occupied by the Secretary of Public Education and another part, the General File of Notaries , until 1973.

Today, parts of the property are owned by individuals. The cloister of the property is managed by a private board.

Another part is the House-Home for the Elderly Old Hospital Concepción Béistegui .

Apparently, the inner patios are now used for social, artistic and cultural events, and workshops are held for the elderly in the home.

Our second night dinner was Rojo Bistrot a favourite.

The bistro is a small corner dining room, Amsterdam 71, at Av. Parras, Colonia Condesa.

The bistrot opened in 1999.

The bistrot cuisine is French based with a touch of Moroccan. The restaurant has a well priced wine list,

On this visit tables were well spaced to meet COVID protocols. There is also patio seating - nope smoker heaven.

A favourite dish here is the grilled steak with black pepper, mustard, or herb butter sauce - yummy.

Wandering Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

A scene on East Hastings Street at Gore Avenue.

Many street people keep an amazing collage of collected items. I often wonder how they find the time to collect and the means to carry the possessions around. Shopping carts and suitcases are popular for the purpose.

FAMILY: Five Figures for a Triangle is a 2020 installed sculpture by Vancouver based artist Lyse Lemieux located at 4599 Cambie Street.

The piece is part of the City of Vancouver Public Art Program.

Artist statement:

FAMILY; Five Figures for a Triangle, a public artwork was commissioned in 2015 by the Intergulf Development Group for the City of Vancouver Public Art Program.

It was installed September 29 2020 at the Empire Building located at 4599 Cambie Street in Vancouver across the street and steps away, from the gardened quarry of one of the oldest public sites in Vancouver, Queen Elizabeth Park where for decades families and friends have gathered to play, to picnic and to celebrate together.

The five figures that make up this family are intentionally not gendered and not culturally specific.

The double-sided figures are a playful, strong and hopeful point of connection to the concept of community, home and body.

The two tallest of the five figures stand on the perimeter of the group while the other three are at the core of the gathering.

Each figure is a cacophonic meeting of patterns and painted interstices.

Reproduced by a process of dye sublimation on aluminum the fabrics and patterns that make up the figures are universal and immediately recognizable.

The stripes, plaids, paisleys and dotted fabrics of the shirt-collars and shirt-plackets that make up each figure, brings forward memories and narratives of our own past and histories, regardless of age, gender or cultural background.

Most challenging during the conceptual stages of this artwork was meeting my commitment to have the final fabricated work seamlessly translate the original maquettes made out of paper and fabric in the studio.

Finally, although their positioning on the plaza was determined years before the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic and the now familiar concept of physical distancing, this gathering synchronistically stands apart and yet, in step with each other and the current reality of those times.

In spring 2021 the line between Leipzig and Zeitz was closed due to construction works. Freight traffic was rerouted via Gera during this time. 232 484 brought a freight train from Zwickau to Zeitz in the morning and is now, shortly after noon, on the way back to Zwickau, having train 92090 in tow.

St. Louis is the second-largest city in Missouri, United States. It sits near the confluence of the Mississippi and the Missouri Rivers, on the western bank of the latter. As of 2020, the city proper had a population of around 301,500, while the bi-state metropolitan area, which extends into Illinois, had an estimated population of over 2.8 million, making it the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, the second-largest in Illinois, the seventh-largest in the Great Lakes Megalopolis, and the 20th-largest in the United States.

Before European settlement, the area was a regional center of Native American Mississippian culture. St. Louis was founded on February 14, 1764, by French fur traders Gilbert Antoine de St. Maxent, Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, who named it for Louis IX of France. In 1764, following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War, the area was ceded to Spain. In 1800, it was retroceded to France, which sold it three years later to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase; the city was then the point of embarkation for the Corps of Discovery on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In the 19th century, St. Louis became a major port on the Mississippi River; from 1870 until the 1920 census, it was the fourth-largest city in the country. It separated from St. Louis County in 1877, becoming an independent city and limiting its own political boundaries. St. Louis had a brief run as a world-class city in the early 20th century. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics.

A "Gamma" global city with a metropolitan GDP of more than $160 billion in 2017, metropolitan St. Louis has a diverse economy with strengths in the service, manufacturing, trade, transportation, and tourism industries. It is home to nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri. Major companies headquartered or with significant operations in the city include Ameren Corporation, Peabody Energy, Nestlé Purina PetCare, Anheuser-Busch, Wells Fargo Advisors, Stifel Financial, Spire, Inc., MilliporeSigma, FleishmanHillard, Square, Inc., U.S. Bank, Anthem BlueCross and Blue Shield, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Centene Corporation, and Express Scripts.

Major research universities include Saint Louis University and Washington University in St. Louis. The Washington University Medical Center in the Central West End neighborhood hosts an agglomeration of medical and pharmaceutical institutions, including Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

St. Louis has three professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball, the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League, and the St. Louis BattleHawks of the newly formed XFL. In 2019, the city was awarded a Major League Soccer franchise, St. Louis City SC, which is expected to begin play upon the completion of a 22,500-seat stadium in the city's Downtown West neighborhood in 2023. Among the city's notable sights is the 630-foot (192 m) Gateway Arch in the downtown area. St. Louis is also home to the St. Louis Zoo and the Missouri Botanical Garden, which has the second-largest herbarium in North America.

The Tyrolean Zillertalbahn resumed freight transportation, after some years of discontinuation, in spring 2021. Locomotives such as VL23 of the Styrian "SteiermarkBahn" were borrowed for that purpose. The engine originally from Yugoslavia brought a logging train from Jenbach to Fügen-Hart that day.
