The Great Depression in Vaughan
The Great Depression was one of the most significant events to occur in the 20th century, with many people losing their savings, jobs, and their property. This downturn forced a reliance on local government and communities for assistance as most formalized welfare systems did not yet exist. Though initially better off than other urban areas due to its primarily agriculture-based economy, the situation in Vaughan had worsened considerably by the 1930’s. To alleviate the situation, Vaughan Township Council launched innovative measures such as implementing a formalized welfare system and a work program to help residents.
