“Vaughan Unemployed Ask Relief Shelter and Light as well as Food and Clothes,” The Liberal, 1935

By 1935, many Vaughan citizens were in dire straits because of the Great Depression. They faced homelessness, starvation, and the possibility of freezing to death and many residents relied on the Township’s relief program. Rather than directly provide shelter and light to individuals, Council agreed to sponsor an extra day of relief work each day to allow citizens to cover their bills.
