“Vaughan Prefers Bumps on Road to Financial Bumps,” The Liberal, 1933
The inaugural council of 1933 inherited a difficult financial situation. At the first meeting of the year they were visited by a delegation with suggestions on relief problems, one of which was sending men to work camps. In unemployment relief camps single men did physically demanding labour, in exchange for shelter, food, clothes, medical care and 20 cents a day. They worked forty-four-hour weeks clearing bush, building roads, planting trees, and constructing public buildings.
