In these times of Corona you don’t go to a studio to make music, but just take an extended walk and talk, somewhat hindered by the 1,5 m distance.

On this walk, we encountered another example of social distancing and social coping on the tip of the Noordereiland – a place where people love(d) to hang out and coached fitness group go(went). An instructor found a creative way to remotely facilitate his fitness group.

Shot with the vintage Fuji F30 – one of the cams that started the serious compact cam revolution with its ‘super CCD’ (Fuji’s first push into the land of innovative image sensors) and magnesium-alloy construction.

This is number 10 of the In times of Corona album and 301 of the Fuji F10 and F30 one.

The LNG powered 'Mardi Gras's was on its way from the wharf where it was built (Meyer Turku in Finland) to Florida, for its maiden trip. The only visually redeeming feature of Carnival Cruises' newest ship is its spilt aerodynamic smoke stack (pioneered by the 'France' transatlantic liner in the 60s) and.....'Coney island 'on its upper deck.

The massive scale of the ship and its exposed fairground (there's even a roller coaster ride installed) seems to signify a dominant trend in the cruise industry.

The previous 'Coney island' phase is shown here: the 'Harmony of the Sea' for the first time breaking the Manhattanism mould and actually showing a fragment of 'Coney Island' (the protruding garish water slide). Coney island is a metaphor for the fairground/amusement park functions that form an important part of Manhattanistic (a term coined by Rem Koolhaas) New York high rises. The conceptual base of Manhattanism is discussed here.

Juxtaposing the Mardi Grass is Norman Foster's World Port Centre (2001). it accommodates the head offices of the Rotterdam Port Authority, the Rotterdam Fire brigade and the 'Veiligheidsregio'.

Unesco World Heritage

The old Dutch masters made great paintings and are famous for their use of light. To get as close as possible to their style, I used a B+W Circulair Polarization Filter to reduce the reflections in the water and to emphasize the Clouds a little more.

Some post-processing was done to remove powerlines in the background.

The Unesco location Kinderdijk is one of the Netherlands most visitid tourist attractions. Lots of possibilities to take magnificent photo's!

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Maassluis, Componistenwijk, Flat, Renovation (very slightly cut)

For now the last of this mini-series about some life stages of reïnforced concrete buildings.

First: background info about the building type shown here. A building system flat.

After the end of WW2, one of the problems of Holland was its housing shortage, the associated figure was 200.000.

This figure turned out to be of the conservative size. People didn't wait anymore to get married, the economy began to grow again. So the output of the housing industry became very important. In the years '46 to '65, the yearly production rate never sunk below 35.000 and often even rose above 90.000. Because of the advantages (low cost, short lead time, fast construction, less need of skilled labour), for some 12% of the production a industrial (prefab) building systems was used. The most prominent systems were MUWI, Dura-Coignet, and PLN/Elementum.

These were rational and standardized systems that were of course based on modernistic design principles - they were, in a way, the epitome of modernist logic. A building often only offered one floor plan, which' dimensions were generally not generous (often between 45 en 75 square meters).

The urban design was often not handled by the municipalities but by the factories involved.

.

The building shown here was made using the PLN (Elementum) system. The system was developed in Denmark and fabricated in Maassluis, in the Elementum factory operated by Panagro. Like all the Dutch building system factories, the elements didn't have to be transported over a long distance. In the case of (Elementum), the output was used only in Vlaardingen (2571 units), Schiedam (923), Spijkenisse (432) and Maassluis (2674).

In the nineties of the previous century and later, many units (all social housing) were demolished or renovated and the quarters redeveloped. This obviously had to do with their age but also due to the fact that the design of the housing no longer fitted the actual residents and the way they use the houses and their environment. Another reason was that most municipalities (and housing corporations) involved, wanted to diminish the number of social housing (low cost) units. They aimed for a socially 'more balanced composition of the populace'.

Industrial building systems (IBS) are still important nowadys. Check out this video and this one. The more 'advanced' state of IBS is modular construction, check it out here.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Leiden, Center, Lammermarkt Parking (JHK), Cars (uncut)

The Lammermarkt parking (JHK architects 2017) can accomadate 525 cars. It’depth is 22m and there are 7 levels, configured in a spiral.

This is what the JHK wrote about the facility “Although parking is not a goal in itself, parking in parking garage Lammermarkt is an experience in itself. The typology of the round parking garage means that all floors are spatially connected to each other. Although the depth is emphasized and visible, this spaciousness forms the basis for a socially safe environment that feels pleasant and comfortable. The light-filled parking garage excels in functionality and comfort. The routing is clear, the parking spaces are wide and the stairs and elevators are easily found. There is no intersecting traffic and traffic with one-way traffic is maximal.

In a spiral, the motorist drives down and automatically comes across an empty parking space. There is therefore no search traffic. A timeline on the footpaths guides the pedestrian to the lifts and the stairwell. You can pocket or rise one floor per century. Important moments from the century in question are depicted on the back wall of the garage, where half a floor has been created for a work of art that takes the visitor into Leiden's history. These illustrations by graphic designer Tom van der Heiden are not only beautifully narrative but also contribute to the recognisability and orientation in the garage. They help in retrieving the car. In the lift hall the artworks are once again explained with references to places in the contemporary city that can be visited. As a pedestrian you leave the parking garage through a round pavilion on the ground level. By means of an open staircase, a generous connection is made with the administration space and the parking floor on the first floor below ground level. The city of Leiden and the De Valk windmill leave the car park as a result of the curved and five-meter high glass façade.” (Source: JHK architecten)

Because of the rain, I didn't go to the Wilhelminapier, my favorite new camera testing ground, for testing my new Lumix GX9. It will replace the G5. Not because the G5 has problems but because the advances of the Lumix m4/3 technology are too spectacular to ignore. This capture should showcase one of the major advancements: the new 20 MP sensor without the dreaded AA filter (which basically makes a cam slightly myopic ('bijziend') to avoid moiré / aliasing). The absence of the filter generally makes pics sharper- there's actually hardly any need to sharpen the GX9 pics, it's just an option now, instead of a requirement, and in the case of my 10 years old H-FSA45200 - a tele zoom lens, which begins to lose its sharpness at the last part of its tele zoom range - it actually gets a new lease of life since you can now actually use the whole zoom range.

The Sand Motor is an innovative method for coastal protection. It is a huge volume of sand that has been applied along the coast of the province South-Holland at the city of Monster in 2011. Wind, waves and currents will spread the sand naturally along of South-Holland coastline. It's like building with nature. The Sand Motor will gradually change in shape and will eventually befully incorporated into the dunes and the beach. The coast will be broader and safer.
