Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, RET, Subway, European Song Contest banner (uncut).

The Rijnhaven elevated tracks of the RET subway with its banner, celebrating the European Song Contest in Rotterdam. The banners already look nicely gritty, in a true Rotterdam fashion. The text on the banner is a tribute to the rich lyrical heritage of the festival ;-) And most probably from the song that won the contest in 1969: Lenny Kuhr´s 'De Troudadour'.

Continuing my curious lenses & cameras exploration - this time the diminutive and vintage Lumix GF3 mirco-four-third system cam.

Looking south from Ter Heijde you can see Maasvlakte in the distance.

The Sand Motor is an innovative method for coastal protection. It is a huge volume of sand that has been applied along the coast of the province South-Holland at Ter Heijde in 2011. Wind, waves and currents will spread the sand naturally along of South-Holland coastline. It's like building with nature. The Sand Motor will gradually change in shape and will eventually befully incorporated into the dunes and the beach. The coast will be broader and safer. Watch the film about the construction of the Sand Motor.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Laan op Zuid, Marathon Rotterdam, runner Kawu Worku (uncut)

The Rotterdam Marathon is full of stories. About the amateurs who after long and strenuous training entered it for the first time or tried to better there times, about their suffering, about the pro-athletes also trying to best their personal records and perform the way the race direction envisions it. And about replenishment, the planning of it and the rules that guide it. It's all in my Rotterdam Marathon album.

In this one, # 34, I panned Ethiopian runner Bazu Worku.

The Maas is one of Holland's major waterways. Due to the continuous deposition of silt, the river needs to be dredged regularly. Shot at the entrance of the Rijnhaven. In the BG is decorated back facade of Fenix 1 (the former San Francisco veem). A photo captured inside this veeem, including its history, is here.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Katendtecht, Wall, Graffiti (cut from B&T)

A graffiti covered backstreet Katendrecht wall. Shot with a curious combination: the Lumix GX9 and the 'plastic fantastic' (Canon EF 50 1,8 II), mediated by a Viltrox mount adapter/speedbooster. With only a slight deterioration of the image quality, it marries the two totally different camera system worlds while changing the lens to 36mm f/ 1,3. Which is of course beneficial for the light-gathering capabilities, and some say to the depth of focus too. A thing that it dóes do, is the smoothing out of the spiky bokeh of the plastic fantastic.

Europe, Holland, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Wilehminapier, Rijnhaven, Katendrecht, former ECCR site (slightly cut from all sides)

In the BG are Wilhelminapier’s high rises (from l to r: Montevideo(Mecanoo/Francine Houben), World Port Center(Norman Foster, New Orléans(Alvaro Siza) and the new kid on the block Boston(Van Dongen-Koschuchts).

On on the foreground is the former ECCR (European China Centre Rotterdam) site. Like I wrote some 2 years ago here, the European China Centre Rotterdam failed miserably. Mainly due to some avoidable political administrative problems the project halted after the underground parking of the main building (The View) was realized. The project organization was disbanded and the city was left with a large a concrete expanse (often covered with large puddles) with on the places were pillars were meant to be lengths of rebar sticking out. A dismal place.

But ! Some months ago a new organization (The View of Rotterdam BV) was formed with the object to realize the plan without the international trade connections. It consists of several buildings, containing apartments, a hotel, shops, offices, restaurants and a supermarket. Since the underground part of one of the buildings (the bi-level parking of The View) was already there it was decided that the original plan of the architect (Joke Vos architects) would be followed, with some adaptions made by Marge architects.

Edit: A few weeks after posting this the name of the poject was changed (and maybe more|). It's called Bay House now: here.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Schiedam, Merwehaven, Figee Cranes (slightly cut).

This is the last one of this mini-series about the partly demolished and now completely vanished installations and buildings of the Schiedam Gusto wharf at the Merwehaven (closed in 1978).

It's shot inside an electric Figee harbour crane. In the front-middle part is the glassed-in cabin of the crane operator (the 'kraandrijver') and behind this is the service area with the machinery.

Cranes like this had booms up to 38 m long and could hoist between 2,5 - 5 tons.

The area now is a part of the M4H urban redevelopment project. So this is number 206 of the Urban Frontiers Urban Frontier album. And 72 of the Gloriously dilapidated one: here.
