One of the nicely weathered quays of the Waalhaven with a row of containers not used for storage.

The Waalhaven is one of the harbours on the left bank of the Maas in Rotterdam. With its area of 310 ha, it is the largest excavated harbour basin in the world. The Waalhaven flows into the Nieuwe Maas and is directly connected to the sea via the Scheur and the Nieuwe Waterweg.

This is number 330 of Rotterdam Harbour & Industry and 95 of Gloriously delapidated.

Let's return to the Waalhaven again... and see that the sturdy metal container boxes aren't impervious to damage.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Zuidplen, High rises, Rotterdamse DagenDagen/Bovenop Zuid, Boarding, Cables (uncut).

Captured during the 'Bovenop Zuid' roofwalk on the roof of the ZuidPlein shopping mall.

The walk is street-at rich and fascinating. The artist(collectives) showcased @ Bovenop Zuid are: here.

The context: "In modern cities, miles of unused flat rooftops await a new function. Rotterdam alone has over 18 square kilometres of unused flat roofs. That must change, and the rooftops can provide the space to realize the housing challenge, energy transition, climate change and inclusiveness in cities". Text: from the Dakendagen website.

By the way: Hurry, Bovenop Zuid closes on June 30.

This is number 10 of Rotterdamse Daken Dagen 2022 & 2023 and ofcourse 1421 of Minimalism/explicit Graphism.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminepier, Mist, De Rotterdam (slightly cut from all sides)

One of the qualities of OMA/Koolhaas’ De Rotterdam 'vertical city' is, notwithstanding the sheer bulk of the edifice, its uncanny ability to be there and kinda not. This is due to its glass facades. And mist always tends to help with this.

Shot from the Veemstraat.

This is number 43 of De Rotterdam.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Bundweg/Rijnhaven Zuidzijde, Bay house, Scaffolding (slightly cut from B&T)

Once The View a prolonged failure, and now rekindled and called Bay House. This time the project will actually be realized - the edifice has already risen 8 floors above ground level.

The Bay House residential complex will have ten floors with 110 luxury apartments. Of these, 22 are rental apartments with their own entrance and 88 are owner-occupied apartments. Design: Joke Vos architects.

This is number 1092 of Minimalism / explicit graphism and 10 of the new Greyed out album.

Oh, how I regret that I didn't have my camera with me, luckily there is always a cell phone, wich is better than nothing

I have used a texture here but cannot remember the name, The name of the texture is "aged sage". If anyone can provide with the name of the maker, please let me know so I can give credit.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Feijenoord, Supermarket, Oranges (cut from B&T)

Back again to the Netherlands.

We like to squeeze our oranges ourselves - but sometimes we use large and shiny machines like the one captured here at a local supermarket.

This is number 1399 of the Minialism / explicit Graphism album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Katendrechtt, Building, Masonry, Scaffolding, Netting, Staircase (uncut)

A shrouded apartment building nearing its completion in Katendrecht, on the part of the quarter where once the Hanno container terminal was located.

I was by the way very pleasantly surprised here by the resolving power of the old Tamron zoom lens, once ('90s) designed for analog dSLR's.

This is number 292 of Zwart/Wit and of course 278 of Urban frontiers.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminaplein, Sculpture (slightly cut)

A structure on the Wilhelmineplein, facing the regional Courthouse which I identified as a sculpture, but I ain't sure it is. There are probably a myriad of metaphoric connections to be made between this structure and a courthouse. But I was not thinking about it when I shot this – the motive was purely graphic, as it often is ;-)

This is number 1325 of Minimalism & explicit Graphism

and 311 of Urban frontiers.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Diergaarde Blijdorp, Cage (slightly cut from l)

The top part of the cage of the ringtail maki's (lemur catta). There are cables suspended from the top that can be climbed.

The cage is of course central to the concept of the Zoo- animals kept in captivity. They're cared for, fed, and treated when ill but aren't allowed to leave.

This is the last one of this Blijdorp mini-series and number 16 of the Blijdorp Zoo album.

The entry of the Nieuwe Luxor theatre (2001, Bolles & Wilson).

Refelcted are the facades of the neo-modernist Wihelminatoren (Zwarts en Jansma, 19980) and the Maastoren ( Dam & partners architects, 2010).

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Katendrecht, High ruise, Facade Katendrechts Hoofd (cut from B & T)

After the Rotterdam harbour activities were moved to the outer ring of the Rotterdam agglomeration in the 80s, the Katendrecht quarter is, at last, undergoing a massive redevelopment.

There are now terraced houses and apartment buildings and a school, on the southern edge (the Maashaven side) of Katendrecht, the place where once the Hanno freight terminal was.

Shown here is the facade of one of the highrises near the 2nd Katendrechts hoofd.

And tectonics is still meant in the architectural, not geological sense ;-)

This is number 303 of the Urban Frontiers album and 73 of Facades.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag CS, Light sculpture

Den Haag Central station once was Den Haag SS (Staatsspoor) which was demolished in 1970. This pic was shot in the grand hall of the third incarnation of the station (2016, Benthem Crouwel) with its glass and metal roof of 120 x 100 meter with a height of 22 meter. Shown here is one of the light sculptures of this space.

This is number 85 of Den Haag and 1327 of Minimalism & explicit Graphism

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kruisplein, Calypso (slightly cut)

Shown here is Calypso, a building complex with 407 up- market apartments, seven parking floors, offices, commercial spaces and the 'Paulus kerk'. It was designed by London architect William Alsop and Van der Laan Bouma Architekten.

On the site once was a cinema with the same name.

The soundtrack is Martha & the Muffins. This quirky 80s song goes well with the fun-loving style of William Alsop.

This is number 1195 of Minimalism Explicit graphism and 601 of Rotterdam architecture.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Energiekwartier, Electriciteitsfabriek (uncut)

The Electriciteitsfabriek (EF) is a gritty cathedral-like industrial building and a part of The Hague municipal power station (designed in 1904-1928 by A.A. Schadee). It once housed the coal-fired power generation turbines, so it’s sometimes called the “turbine hal”. The old turbine hall was decommissioned and after an extended period, was put to use again, this time as a giant art workshop and exhibition space. Which was teminated in January 18, 2022.

The power station itself is still in operation; nowadays, it’s gas-turbine-based.

I visited the EF in 2017 when it was temporally changed into the 'Zwanikkenfabriek'.

If you wonder what the turbo-alternators that were removed from the building looked like, check one out from approx the same time installed in the ‘Estacão Eléctrica Central Tejo’ in Lisbon here.

This is number 6 of the Electriciteits(Zwanikken)Fabriek album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Diergaarde Blijdorp, Dalmatian Pelicans (uncut)

"The Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) is the largest member of the pelican family, and perhaps the world's largest freshwater bird, although rivalled in weight and length by the largest swans. With a range spanning across much of Central Eurasia, from the Mediterranean in the West to the Taiwan Strait in the East, and from the Persian Gulf in the South to Siberia in the North, it is a short-to-medium-distance migrant between breeding and overwintering areas." A reissue from the Summer of 2012.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Cool, Coolhaven, Little C

Much has already been said and written about Little C. See the previous post for a little sample.

The style of the building complex can partly be traced back to the inherent cynicism of the project developers that created a project that uses the morphology of ultimately very problematic urban districts/housing complexes like The Projects (New York) and the long ago demolished Kowloon (Hong Kong) quarter.

This is number 298 of Zwart/Wit.

Sunset in spring over the lake called Gaatkensplas.

Loaction: Barendrecht , Zuid-Holland , Nederland, Europa.

Always this lake has it's wonderful moments. Ofcourse one can dream away at it's beautiful sunrise or sunset, but the lake has more then that.

If I remember well, before the lake was made a long time ago (it is an artificial lake) I walked through the wasteland there. It was so interesting for me, dead tree shapes, mud, old stones. Nothing for the materialist dutch people here. But, later on I learned that my feeling was right. Now, underneath the water there is an archaeological site of the Klokbeker people preserved, who lived here even earlier then us, wow... thats old.

The Klokbeker name refers to the people who lived in the Netherlands between approximately 2500 and 1900 BC. They are named after a characteristic earthenware cup that, when turned upside down, looks a bit like a bell or clock.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Rijnhaven, Terraforming, Sand dispenser (slightly cut from all sides)

During high tide, the results of the filling of the Rijnhaven get somewhat camouflaged. In this part of Rotterdam, the difference between high and low tide is some 1,5 m. On the left (bottom) are the New Luxor theatre's characteristic protruding parking deck and InHolland (top). On the right is Bayhouse.

Shot from the 20th floor of 'De Rotterdam'.

As I wrote earlier, Rijnhaven is being redeveloped. This harbour was created in 1895 to offer shelter for Rhine vessels ('rijnaken'), which could not operate during the winter due to the freezing of the rivers.

After the creation of the harbour, the transit freight traffic to Rotterdam continued to increase, and the new Rijnhaven was made suitable for large sea-going vessels by deepening it. As planned, the Rijnhaven became an essential port for the transhipment of bulk goods 'on stream' - the sea-going vessels were moored on buoys, separate from the quay, and their cargo was directly moved to rhine ships. In de 70/80s of the last century, the Rijnhaven lost its transhipment function and was brought back to its old function. In 2015, the rhine ship berths were moved to, among others, the Maashaven. Enabling the redevelopment of the old harbour.

It will be partly (30%) filled up (pure terraforming) to enable the realization of, amongst others, an office/apartment building strip with up to 200m high edifices, called the 'Skyline Posthumalaan' with an adjacent park and city beach. And there will be the floating Rijnhavenpark, too.

This is number 10 of Rijnhaven - the redevelopment, 348 of Rotterdam harbour and industry and 43 of De Rotterdam.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Hoek van Holland, Noordzee, Beach, Nieuwe Waterweg, Maasvlakte, EMO bulk terminal, Powerstation , Wind turbines (cut from B&T)

In the BG is the industrial Maasvlakte with cranes of the EMO bulk (mainly iron ore) terminal, the pulverized coal & biomass fired 1000 MW twin powerstation of E.ON Benelux with its 171 m. chimneys (It’s the biggest NOx (8500 tons/year) polluter in the Netherlands and the wind-turbine park (9 turbines producing 14 MW).

In front of that is the silver ribbon of the Nieuwe Waterweg - the waterway that connects the Rotterdam habours with the North Sea.

Cut from B&T. This is number 126 of the Beaches album and 17 of Hoek van Holland.

The river Alblas is a small river in the Dutch province Zuid-Holland.

Bleskensgraaf is really called Bleskensgraaf and Hofwegen. They were combined in 1855. The village forms part of the municipality of Molenwaard. Apart from a number of old farms and a flourmill, Bleskensgraaf does not have many monuments.

The village lies in the middle of the polder landscape of the Alblasserwaard, on the small bog river Alblas. There is the Natuurpad [Nature trail] Bleskensgraaf, which also passes along the hamlet of De Donk, which lies on a seven-metre high hill. A ‘donk’ is a type of sand dune which originated in the ice age. Some protrude above the peat and clay ground.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Kop van Zuid, J.P. Bakemakade, Binnenhaven, Vessels (slightly cropped from all sides)

The Binnenhaven was very modern for the time, equipped as it was with steam and hydraulic cranes and coal tips. It was realized by the Rotterdamsche Handelsvereeniging (RHV Lodewijk Pincoffs). At the time, the ports (including the Entrepothaven) were avoided by ships if possible because of the quay dues levied by the RHV (which did not occur in the Dutch ports at the time) and the difficult manoeuvring in and out of the harbour. In 1892, the profitable operation was no longer possible and it was taken over by the municipality of Rotterdam.

Adjacent to the harbour was the infamous Loods (Hall) 24. Nowadays the harbour is partly filled in and used as a berth for yachts and houseboats.

This is number 307 from the Rotterdam Harbour and industry album.
