Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Lange Voorhout, Thorbecke monument (slightly cut from B&T)

Thom Puckey’s Thorbecke sculpture (marble & steel, 2017). It’s a monument to the 19th-century statesman Johan Rudolph Thorbecke (1798-1872). The art work lets the 19th and 21st centuries intersect and was an initiative from the municipal council of The Hague.

Thorbecke is the founder of the Dutch constitutional monarchy. The present impact of Thorbecke's ideas is symbolized by the direction of his gaze towards 'the Torentje' - the office of the Durch prime minister.

As chairman of the Constitution Committee, Thorbecke founded Dutch parliamentary democracy in 1848. King William II established this committee to draft a new Constitution. This was because he was shocked by the political turmoil abroad. The Constitution was almost wholly written by Thorbecke. It introduced direct elections, ministerial responsibility and the extension of parliamentary rights. Thorbecke’s constitution turned the Netherlands into a modern state. It was proclaimed on November 3, 1848.

Captured during a great extended lunch with Leun. I used the 19-year-old Olympus C8080 here. It’s still going strong.

At the time, labourers of the now fully redeveloped Katendrecht' Hanno freight terminal would be hard-pressed to imagine that some 30 years later, an extensive array of residential buildings would be created on the site, with a large inner court called 'Daktuin' (roof garden) by the residents.

About de Groene Kaap: 450 rental and owner-occupied homes in an array of buildings connected by courtyards, walkways and roof gardens. It was designed by Bureau Massa and realized in 2021.

Katendrecht is undergoing a massive redevelopment after the Rotterdam Harbour activities of the quarter were moved to the outer ring of the Rotterdam agglomeration.

In Covid times the Rotterdam inner city is a sad affair with its screened of benches, semi-closed shops, and almost devoid of people. What can one do else than look up at the Koons-esque street decorations?

Shor with a Lumix LX7. Obtained for the same ridiculously low price I bought the LX3 for. And that little Leica/Lumix f/1,4 - 2,3 - 24-90 mm lens really rocks.

Though I'm not too keen on shooting weather phenomena, I couldn't help adding this to my industrial picture. Had to handle it with restraint though - my camera wanted to make it more spectacular.

The Sand Motor is an innovative, though simple method for coastal protection. It is a huge volume of sand that has been applied along the coast of the province South-Holland at the city of Monster in 2011. Wind, waves and currents will spread the sand naturally along of South-Holland coastline. It's like building with nature. The Sand Motor will gradually change in shape and will eventually befully incorporated into the dunes and the beach. The coast will be broader and safer.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminapier, New Orleans, Cranes (slightly cut from all sides)

The most saillant element of the marble clad New Orleans (2010, Alvaro Siza) high rise is its crown. It's the place where the bi-level penthouses are located. In the foreground are two cranes based at the construction site of the new neighbours of the building: the Boston and Seatle high rises.

The stage is ofcourse the the Kop van Zuid - an urban restructuring project in progress which has converted major parts of the old harbour area on the South bank of the Maas (with its defunct ports, warehouses and railway heads) into a integrated living, recreative and commercial service quarter.

This is number 150 of the Urban Frontiers album here. About this album: Holland is one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the cities are expanding all the time, to the detriment of the open countryside or the city's own green spaces. An other growth strategy is the conversion of the former industry or habour spaces. This album is about this process of (sub-)urbanization, urban revitalization and my fascination with it.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Tweebosbuurt, Demolition, Fence, Veranda (cut from B&T)

An intermediate phase of the demolition of the Tweebos quarter is shown here. Most of the rubble is removed, the ground is levelled, on some spots, grass is planted to settle the soil, and pipes are present to be sunken in the ground.

After that, the construction of the new buildings will be started.

In the RU corner is the last block standing, and in the BG is Veranda (the terrain of the former Piet Smit wharf).

The backstory about the unfortunate demolition of the Tweebosbuurt is here.

This is number 14 of the Demolition of the Tweebosbuurt album.

"Home of Hopper"

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Hoek van Holland, North Sea, Beach, Shells, Razor shells (uncut)

The elongated shells on display here (shot during low tide) are razor shells (Ensis magnus). They are obviously empty.

The razor shells live under the sand, using their powerful feet to dig to a safe depth. Its digging activity comprises six stages, repeated cyclically. A digging cycle involves the integration of the muscular foot (which takes up a large part of the body) with the opening and closing of the valve and one end. The foot is inflated hydraulically, extending into the sand and anchoring the animal. Deflation of the foot then draws the shell down. The razor shell also squirts water into the sand, removing loose sand from its path. The foot is thought to exert a pressure of about 196 kilopascals (2.00 kgf/cm2; 28.4 psi).

The presence of a razor shell is revealed by a keyhole-shaped hole in the sand, made by its siphons during suspension feeding for plankton.

Razor clams can grow up to eight inches long, but are typically only four to six inches. Razor clams are filter feeders - they strain food particles from the water around them. They primarily eat microscopic algae but can also consume small crustaceans and other organic matter. (Wiki)
