The Sand Motor is an innovative, though simple method for coastal protection. It is a huge volume of sand that has been applied along the coast of the province South-Holland at the city of Monster in 2011. Wind, waves and currents will spread the sand naturally along of South-Holland coastline. It's like building with nature. The Sand Motor will gradually change in shape and will eventually befully incorporated into the dunes and the beach. The coast will be broader and safer.

This imported Honda Odyssey with diplomatic plates was parked on Storm van 's Gravesandeweg in the town of Wassenaar. This is a fairly standard US import to see in the Holland, however this one had diplomatic plates, which made it a great spot.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminapier, New Orleans, Cranes (slightly cut from all sides)
The most saillant element of the marble clad New Orleans (2010, Alvaro Siza) high rise is its crown. It's the place where the bi-level penthouses are located. In the foreground are two cranes based at the construction site of the new neighbours of the building: the Boston and Seatle high rises.
The stage is ofcourse the the Kop van Zuid - an urban restructuring project in progress which has converted major parts of the old harbour area on the South bank of the Maas (with its defunct ports, warehouses and railway heads) into a integrated living, recreative and commercial service quarter.
This is number 150 of the Urban Frontiers album here. About this album: Holland is one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the cities are expanding all the time, to the detriment of the open countryside or the city's own green spaces. An other growth strategy is the conversion of the former industry or habour spaces. This album is about this process of (sub-)urbanization, urban revitalization and my fascination with it.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Tweebosbuurt, Demolition, Fence, Veranda (cut from B&T)
An intermediate phase of the demolition of the Tweebos quarter is shown here. Most of the rubble is removed, the ground is levelled, on some spots, grass is planted to settle the soil, and pipes are present to be sunken in the ground.
After that, the construction of the new buildings will be started.
In the RU corner is the last block standing, and in the BG is Veranda (the terrain of the former Piet Smit wharf).
The backstory about the unfortunate demolition of the Tweebosbuurt is here.
This is number 14 of the Demolition of the Tweebosbuurt album.

"Home of Hopper"
Deze dag stond in het teken van goederenvervoer bij de RTM. Diverse stoom en diesellocs reden goederentrams of personentrams met goederenwagens. Het weer was uitstekend en de trams weer schitterend.
This day was all about freight transport at the RTM. Various steam and diesel locomotives drove freight trams or passenger trams with freight wagons. The weather was excellent and the trams were again magnificent.
Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Hoek van Holland, North Sea, Beach, Shells, Razor shells (uncut)
The elongated shells on display here (shot during low tide) are razor shells (Ensis magnus). They are obviously empty.
The razor shells live under the sand, using their powerful feet to dig to a safe depth. Its digging activity comprises six stages, repeated cyclically. A digging cycle involves the integration of the muscular foot (which takes up a large part of the body) with the opening and closing of the valve and one end. The foot is inflated hydraulically, extending into the sand and anchoring the animal. Deflation of the foot then draws the shell down. The razor shell also squirts water into the sand, removing loose sand from its path. The foot is thought to exert a pressure of about 196 kilopascals (2.00 kgf/cm2; 28.4 psi).
The presence of a razor shell is revealed by a keyhole-shaped hole in the sand, made by its siphons during suspension feeding for plankton.
Razor clams can grow up to eight inches long, but are typically only four to six inches. Razor clams are filter feeders - they strain food particles from the water around them. They primarily eat microscopic algae but can also consume small crustaceans and other organic matter. (Wiki)
This is number 96 of the Adventures in Chaos album and 128 of Beaches.

The The IFFR (International Film Festival Rotterdam) is about to start again. It's always nice to see the newest incarnation of the film Tiger. The designers of Studio 75B must have had a field day creating this new set.
About the history of the IFFR tiger:
"Since 1973, the tiger has been the iconic symbol of IFFR, chosen as a playful nod to the MGM studio logo's lion and its representation of danger, passion, and the courage to forge one's path – signifying independence within the film industry.
That same year, international protection from threats for endangered plants and animals was agreed upon for the first time. Hence, for this year’s festival campaign, Rotterdam design agency 75B, together with our Festival Director Vanja Kaludjercic, drew a connection between the need to preserve tigers and their habitat with the role of IFFR in defending and preserving filmmaking from all across the world."

This is number 21 of the IFFR album.
Europe. Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Wilhelminapier Ventilation shaft, Tree( slightly cut from all sides).
A detail of the array of ventilation shafts of an underground parking on the Wilhelminapier, an integral part of the Kop Zuid urban restructuring project, which transformed a former delipidated harbour area into a lively residential recreative and creative industry and living quarter. A neighbouring shaft, made of another material is here.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Timmerhuis (OMA), Meeting room (slightly cut)
Shot at the ‘Timmerhuis’, at the bottom layer (floors 1 to 5) of this OMA designed building (Rem Koolhaas, Reinier de Graaf. Interior design: Saskia Simon, Katrien van Dijk).
This level is used by the municipality of Rotterdam (22.000 square meters, max capacity of 1800 of civil servants) and the Museum Rotterdam.
Grandmaster Rem isn’t well known for his keen sense of humour, but the team of interior designers (led by Saskia Simon and Katrien van Dijk) seems to be a little different., when one considers ’the elephant in the room’ here. and this pic too, captured in one of the bigger meeting rooms of the Timmerhuis, with a picture-carpet of the Feijenoord soccer stadium (De Kuip) in full swing.
This decoration seems to illustrate the saying that collective decision making is an arena (the 'policy arena'). With players, rules and ‘supporters’, cheering the proceedings on. A more ironic reading of the decoration is that it might be a referral to the 'bread and circuses' adagio, stating that the masses can be pacified by the administrative elite by offering them 'bread and circuses' ;-)
This is the start of a new mini-series about the ‘Stadstimmerhuis’.
Number 261 of the Zwart/Wit album.
And number 259 of the Interiors album.
Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, World Port Days, Wilhelmakade, Multratug 32 & 33 (slightly cut)
Multratug 33 and 32 differ drastically from the classic harbour tug. They are of course powerful (5,3MW) but very agile and flexible due to the carousel towing gear. And, owing to the 'RAVE' technology, highly manoeuvrable too, as is shown here.
The sisters were built by Theodor Buschmann Shipyard & Damen Maaskant Shipyard ( 2016-2018) and are operated by Mutlraship.
About 'RAVE': "The RAVE (Robert Allan Ltd. Voith Escort) tug is a new concept (introduced in 2013) for a highly manoeuvrable, high-performance escort and ship-handling tug, jointly developed by Robert Allan Ltd. and Voith Turbo Marine. The most unique characteristic of the RAVE concept is the longitudinal alignment of the two drives ('pods'), in contrast to the more conventional transverse in a “tractor” configuration." Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Leiden, Volkenkundig Museum, People (slightly cut)
Shot at the fabulous Ethnoliogical (Volkenkundig) Museum here.
It's one of the oldest museums of Leiden and it offers the visitor a mindboggling array of cultural artefacts from all over the world.
And, of course, It uses modern tech too on a large scale for its mediated presentation of ethnological daily life (past and present). Which in a way let's the visitors participate in an integrated anthropological play.
