The river Maas carries a lot of silt, so to keep on functioning as a harbour its depth is continually monitored and the silt is regularly removed.
In the BG is, of course, the De Zwaan (the Erasmus bridge)

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Leiden, Center, Lammermarkt Parking (JHK), Cars (uncut)
The Lammermarkt parking (JHK architects 2017) can accomadate 525 cars. It’depth is 22m and there are 7 levels, configured in a spiral.
This is what the JHK wrote about the facility “Although parking is not a goal in itself, parking in parking garage Lammermarkt is an experience in itself. The typology of the round parking garage means that all floors are spatially connected to each other. Although the depth is emphasized and visible, this spaciousness forms the basis for a socially safe environment that feels pleasant and comfortable. The light-filled parking garage excels in functionality and comfort. The routing is clear, the parking spaces are wide and the stairs and elevators are easily found. There is no intersecting traffic and traffic with one-way traffic is maximal.
In a spiral, the motorist drives down and automatically comes across an empty parking space. There is therefore no search traffic. A timeline on the footpaths guides the pedestrian to the lifts and the stairwell. You can pocket or rise one floor per century. Important moments from the century in question are depicted on the back wall of the garage, where half a floor has been created for a work of art that takes the visitor into Leiden's history. These illustrations by graphic designer Tom van der Heiden are not only beautifully narrative but also contribute to the recognisability and orientation in the garage. They help in retrieving the car. In the lift hall the artworks are once again explained with references to places in the contemporary city that can be visited. As a pedestrian you leave the parking garage through a round pavilion on the ground level. By means of an open staircase, a generous connection is made with the administration space and the parking floor on the first floor below ground level. The city of Leiden and the De Valk windmill leave the car park as a result of the curved and five-meter high glass façade.” (Source: JHK architecten)
So art and colours are used effectively again, like in the Kruisplein garage in Rotterdam here but in a somewhat minimalist way.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Crane, Workers (slightly cut from all sides)
Innercity restructuring/redevelopment can be a challenge. How to revitalize the quarter, what to demolish, what to keep and or renovate? What to build, for which target group at what price?
And when the choices are eventually made and the big machines start rolling new problems arise. Some have a logistic nature.
Like here - a crane has to manoeuvre through a narrow street where the long articulated trucks that usually brings this kind of machines to the building site can't come.
This is number 156 of the Urban Frontiers series here. it's about the process of (sub-)urbanization, urban revitalization in Holland.
The soundtrack: Cesaria Evora - Carnaval de Sao Vicente here. Apart from the fact that I listened to the song while processing the file, It has nothing to do with the scene.

The job site office of De Rotterdam. The building site is too large to have all the job site offices nearby. So most of the facilities are on the other side of the Wilhelminapier, in the Rijnhaven.

The Sand Motor at Monster, near The Hague, Zuid-Holland, The Netherlands.
website | maasvlakte book | portfolio book | getty images
The Sand Motor is an innovative method for coastal protection. It's a huge volume of sand that has been applied along the coast of Zuid-Holland at Ter Heijde in 2011. Wind, waves and currents will spread the sand naturally along the coast of Zuid-Holland. The Sand Motor will gradually change in shape and will eventually befully incorporated into the dunes and the beach. The coast will be broader and safer.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Central district, Delftsehof, Graffiti, Speto (slightly cut from all sides)
Shot from the roof of the Schieblock (the Dakakker, featured in the previous post ) into the Delftsehof.
It was created in 1958 (a modernist ‘wederopbouw’ project - a cluster of office buildings). Start of the abandonment of the offices in ‘90s. From 2005 onwards informally redeveloped by temporal structures (the Biergarten) and cultural and recreative use, such as the Hip Hop Huis . The giant graffiti art work near it was made by the Brazilian Speto realized during the R.U.A
( Reflexo on Urban Art ) - Lines, Colours and Forms of Brazilian Urban Art festival (July-August 2009). Brazilian graffiti artists were invited to paint huge walls in the streets of Rotterdam to show urban and contemporary Brazilian art next to institutionalized art of museums and galleries.
The backdrop (from L to R): the Nationale Nederlanden office building, Central Station (above it: the Groothandelsgebouw), and the former PTT post distribution centre.
Gentrification, often the next step of informal revitalization processes, doesn't seem to be in the books here. But in due course the chronic housing shortage in Rotterdam might well lead to the creation of upmarket apartments in the office buildings on dispaly here .
About Speto (Rodrigo Level) in his own words: “I came from a neighborhood (Santana in Sao Paulo) where the children would play freely on the streets- Riding their bicycles and skateboards , playing with kites ,lantern balloons … My grandfather was a Sambista (samba musician) , My uncle was a soccer player, my father used to sing and my mother was extremely catholic . All those elements were very important through my childhood and youth. I am a self-taught artist , I did not go to school nor to the University. Graffiti was something completely new back then and there was no school other than the Streets.”
The soundtrack: Mais que nada - Sergio Mendes & Black eyed peas.

A new parking lot in the Eendragtspolder, located between Rotterdam, Zevenhuizen and Rottemeren, which is transformed into an area where water storage, nature, recreation and sports are combined. A new major rowing course has been given a prominent place in a water storage area of 300 hectares, giving room for four million m3 of temporarily water storage.
(Bron: top010.nl)

Typical inside-the-dike landscape of South-Holland Isles like Goeree Overflakkee. On the right there is the Volkerak, a large inlet of the North Sea. Before 1967, it was a tidal river open to the North Sea, but it was closed off as part of the Delta Works.

Achmea offices by VVKH architects. The location was confined and difficult to cultivate. There were large quantities of pipes in the ground, the railway embankment was in the way and across the terrain on the right is a road. These limitations have resulted in a compact building and VVKH architects have designed the remaining public space as pleasant as possible. Beneath the building and road is a two-level parking garage. This triple usage of land is unique to the Netherlands.

The city can be anything to anybody. A popular metaphor is 'the city is a stage'. This metaphor adds new meaning here because of the reflective area in the FG of the picture, the bottom level of the unfinished 'The View'. A failed project.
But first the buildings in the BG, that are what they were meant to be. They were all created as part of the Kop van Zuid urban development, an urban restructuring project in progress which has converted major parts of the old harbour area on the South bank of the Maas (with its defunct ports, warehouses and railway heads) into an integrated living, recreative and commercial service quarter.

Back row, from left to right: InHolland extension (by Erik van Egeraat associated architects, 2009), Cité student / starters tenement building (by Tangram architecten, 2010), UWV office (by OZP, 2009 ), 1989 (by Mecanoo, 1989 - probably one of the last high rise (tenement buildings exclusively dedicated to affordable housing in Holland. The buildings are (neo-) modernist, although the UWV building has a nasty postmodern twist.
Back to the the concrete expanse with the giant puddle on the foreground- the bare, bottom level (a double level underground parking) of 'The View - European China Centre Rotterdam (ECCR)'. The materialization of an interesting large scale cross cultural business project created by a team of Dutch (Volker Wessels Vastgoed), Belgian & Chinese investors (Shanghai Construction Group) that involved houses, shops and offices and public spaces: "The European China Centre Rotterdam is a modern international centre for business, living & leisure. A meeting place for East and West where cultures can mingle to create new opportunities. The concept of the European China Centre is based on the WE principle, WE both are proud to be here! The European China Centre Rotterdam functions as a platform for business, exchange and alliances. Government, companies and knowledge institutions are involved. Our services providers are trusted parties that are selected by their reputation and expertise provided in the Sino-Dutch network. The two main buildings of the centre will be completed in the first phase. The offices, 110 apartments and supermarket are being built in the West building. The East building will house a world-class hotel, business centre, luxury restaurants and various speciality shops." Source: here
Construction started in april 2011 and was halted again after completion of the twin layered underground parking in 2012 because the Belgian partner jumped ship and because the Dutch government didn't make up its mind about providing the Chinese investors with residence permits. That last part seems to be a curious flaw in a plan with a big cross-cultural and economic scope like this. After a while the Chinese partners left the project too and the ECCR general website and the ECCR real estate website have recently disappeared. The project is on permanent hold .
In the context of this photo, 'The View' has become an ironic name. And the urban stage the ECRR / The Views project wanted to offer will remain empty….it only showcases reflections of projects that did made it. The city is a laboratory (another popular metaphor).... ....sometimes things don't work out as expected.

Toyota Siennas are one of the most common US-spec cars to see in the Netherlands but this is the only 1st Generation one I have seen. Judging by the plate format, this car was most likely imported within the last 2 years. This car had the smaller size 'US' plates.

Station and viaduct for Randstad-rail by Zwarts & Jansma Architecten.
Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Timmerhuis (OMA), Atrium, Offices (cut from all sides).
Today a short break in the São Paulo series.
A little while ago the ‘Timmerhuis’ opened its doors. The first 5 floors of this OMA building (Rem Koolhaas, Reinier de Graaf. Interior design: Saskia Simon, Katrien van Dijk) are used by the municipality of Rotterdam (22.000 square meter, max capacity of 1800 of civil servants) and Museum Rotterdam, the top section of the building is formed by 84 apartments. It’s this level that gives the building it’s striking multi-'cube' shape. In OMA speak the rectangular 'cubes' are called pixels.
Other defining features are it’s play with inside/outside, due to the extensive use of partly translucent glass (OMA likes to call the building ‘a cloud of glass and steel’) and last but not least its internal metal modular frame which defines the building’s internal space – it divides and unites, as is shown in this capture, which is shot into one of the two atriums of the building. The modular frame is obviously empty in the atriums. The size of an individual cell is 7,2 x 7,2 x 3.6 m and when a cell is actually filled it becomes a 'pixel' with a floor area of 50 square meter.
More about the atriums: "through the two large atriums, which act like lungs. They are connected to a climate system that stores warmth in summer and cold in winter and releases this energy as warm or cold air as required" . Source: here.
More information about the building is here
