Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Cool, Coolhaven, Little C, Balconies (slightly cut from all sides)
Much has already been said and written about Little C. See the previous post for a little sample.
The style of the building complex can partly be traced back to the inherent cynicism of the project developers that created a project that uses the morphology of ultimately very problematic urban districts/housing complexes like The Projects (New York) -and the long ago demolished Kowloon (Hong Kong) quarter.
This is for now the last of the Little C mini-series.
This is number 1343 of Minimalism / explicit Graphism.
Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rottredam, Kop van Zuid, De Rotterdam, Nieuwe Luxor (slightly cut from all sides)
One of the qualities of OMA/Koolhaas’ De Rotterdam 'vertical city' is, notwithstanding the sheer bulk of the edifice, its uncanny ability to be there and kinda not. This is due to its glass facades. And mist always tends to help with this.
Shot from the Veemstraat.
This is number 42 of De Rotterdam.
Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam West, Delfshaven, Dakpark Vierhavenstrip (slightly cut)
Rotterdam urban revitalization project are often centred around abandoned harbours and their rail yards. The largest one in Rotterdam West is the M4H urban redevelopment project.
A while ago I showed you an element of it, the former HAKA building. here.
Roof park Vierhavenstrip is also an integral element of it. It’s the redeveloped railyard of the adjacent 4 havens (four harbours). And its large: it’s length 120 m, and its breadth 80m, the largest roof park of Europe. It’s a well used park too. There’s a lot of green and is easily accessible from the Bospolder/Tussendijke neighbourhood. There are places to eat and drink, themed gardens and facilities for children.
The park can be reached via various stairways and also has a lift. One of the stairways is shown here, with the side façade of the park´s restaurant (Park restaurant, with its own vegetable garden). Under the roof of the park is a shopping mall.
This is number 252 of Urban Frontiers and 565 of Rotterdam architecture.
Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Leuvehaven, Maritiem museum, Leuvepaviljoen (slightly cut)
To replace three old pavilions of the Rotterdam Maritiem Museum at Rotterdam a new building was created, the Leuve Pavilion (Moederscheim Moonen architects). One of its metal/glass side façades is displayed here. The pavilion is an elongated edifice that combines different functions. It is the home to the Port of Rotterdam Port Visitors Center and the workshops of the Maritime Museum. Here the welders, blacksmiths and carpenters work to maintain the historic fleet with its vintage technology in the museum harbour. These workshops are open to the public. And last but not least there is also a brasserie with a large terrace.
This is number 265 of the Museum album.

OK, let's examine some entropy again, this time the kind tram catenaries make. Rotterdam Central station is one of the hubs of the RET (the municipal public transit company) tram network and that's apparent here.
Prominently in the frame is the Nationale Nederlanden HQ. a neo-mondernist office building (1999, Abe Bonnema). The post-modernist edifice entering the frame is a hotel designed by an architect whose name shall not be mentioned ;-)

Radjik is a young (1 year old) Asian elephant. His mother is Bangka and grandma Irma (died when she was 52 in September 2023), never letting young Radjik out of their sight.
The name Radjik was chosen by the public via an online contest.

Captured during the Bovenop Zuid roof walk on the roof of the ZuidPlein shopping mall.
The walk is street-at rich and fascinating. The artist(collectives) showcased @ Bovenop Zuid are: here.
Dutch Steigers again realized the scaffolding. The nature of the construction material sometimes adds a fairground type of thrill. The supporting towers are iron, the walkway planks are aluminium, and they sometimes nicely sag a bit while walking on them.
The context: "In modern cities, miles of unused flat rooftops await a new function. Rotterdam alone has over 18 square kilometres of unused flat roofs. That must change, and the rooftops can provide the space to realize the housing challenge, energy transition, climate change and inclusiveness in cities". Text: from the Dakendagen website.
By the way: Hurry, Bovenop Zuid closes on June 30.

The Rotterdam World Port Days - cancelled in 2020 'cause of the Covid pandemic, a crippled edition (partly online) in 2021 (same reason). And now fully back.
The workers and the giant off-shore crane displayed here were aboard the 'Panama H332' barge, operated by HAPO. Offshore maintenance work never stops.
About HAPO : "Hapo is specialised in providing pontons, crane barges, heavy machinery and other special equipment for salvaging shipwrecks, off- or onshore operations involving heavy lift, and heavy lifting transport." Text source: Hapobarges.com.
This is number 50 of the World Port Days album and 322 of Rotterdam harbour & industry.
Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Kop van Zuid, J.P. Bakemakade, Binnenhaven, Vessels (slightly cropped from all sides)
The Binnenhaven was very modern for the time, equipped as it was with steam and hydraulic cranes and coal tips. It was realized by the Rotterdamsche Handelsvereeniging (RHV Lodewijk Pincoffs). At the time, the ports (including the Entrepothaven) were avoided by ships if possible because of the quay dues levied by the RHV (which did not occur in the Dutch ports at the time) and the difficult manoeuvring in and out of the harbour. In 1892, the profitable operation was no longer possible and it was taken over by the municipality of Rotterdam.
Adjacent to the harbour was the infamous Loods (Hall) 24. Nowadays the harbour is partly filled in and used as a berth for yachts and houseboats.
This is number 307 from the Rotterdam Harbour and industry album.

Waiting to board the approaching Waterbus back to Rotterdam on the Merwekade in Dordrecht and seeing the conductress emerging and throwing a rope from the front deck of the sleek Australian built ‘River Runner’ catamaran with its modernist ‘De Stijl’ paint scheme.
A year after the start of the Wasterbus service, it lost its competitive edge due to speed restrictions on some parts of the river. Nowadays the service is operated by Aquabus, a joint venture of Doeksen and Arriva.
This is the last one of the Bollard series and number 7 of the new Bollard & Co album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Rijnhaven, Graffiti (cut from T, slightly from L&R)
At the end of the 80s during the big transformation of the Rotterdam harbour (due to the containerization, new harbours near the coast were dug (the Maasvlakte). The Rijnhaven, shown here, together with the adjacent Maashaven largely lost its harbour function.
The latter is being used as a berth for rhine ships and the Rijnhaven will partly be filled in and used for a floating park: the Rijnhavenpark.
The harbour front is already almost wholly redeveloped. Only the Codrico flour factory is still operational.
This is number 317 of Rotterdam harbour & industry and 63 of graffiti / street art.

Shown here is the snow transformed Postumalaan and the Wilhelmina Pier, once the home of the HAL transatlantic shipping company, the Hanno container terminal and various storage facilities (vemen), now accommodating some of Rotterdam’s most iconic highrises, from which De Rotterdam(OMA/Koolhaas), and KPN building Belvédère (Renzo Piano) are shown.
And almost lost in de snowdrift, there’s, of course, the Erasmusbrug (aka de Zwaan, UN/Ben van Berkel) too.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Feijenoord, Kop van Zuid, Tunnel boring equipment (uncut)
A while ago a remarkable operation took place at the Kop van Zuid. Two big electricity cables were installed, going from a transformation station somewhere in Rotterdam's deep South to the Wilhelminapier Cruise terminal. Reason: the cruise ships berthed there expel a lot of toxic exhaust fumes from their electricity generators and the people living in De Rotterdam high rise don’t really appreciate that. The solution: the installation of a ‘walstroom’ facility for the cruise ships (an industrial-sized electricity outlet on the quay) which is connected to the new cables.
These cables had to pass our dike (a medieval dike later heightened / strengthened for ‘Delta’ duty) and to avoid damaging its foundations these cables were run under them via a small tunnel thru which the cables were fed.
Shown here is a technical unit that also supplied water to the business end of the small tunnel boring machine (TBM) which performed the 'horizontal directional drilling (thanx Gerard Vanderlaan).

Back to Rotterdam. Depicted here is a part of 'De Kuil' in the Feijenoord borough, an upmarket combination of a mid-density residential quarter with a school and swimming pool. It was realized in a demolished part of Feijenoord. In these neo-conservative times, there of course won´t be affordable housing.
The period between demolition and creation was relatively long. The space was temporarily used by a public vegetable gardening project.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Mobile tower crane (slightly cut from B&T)
Tower cranes seem to be restricted to construction sites. But they aren't. The mobile ones with their ability to telescope and fold are sometimes seen outside of these zones. Like this Liebherr 73-3. Its height (fully extended ) is 38.5m its reach (unfolded) 26,5 m. It can lift up to 6.000 kg (6 metric tons).
