You cannot visit Brugge, and return without a photo with or of a SWAN. Why Swans in Brugge?

THE LEGEND:

At the end of the 15th century, the oppressed people of Bruges rose in revolt against the unpopular Emperor Maximilian of Austria.

They captured Maximilian and imprisoned him in the Craenenburg House on the Market Square, together with his equally unpopular adviser, Pieter Lanckhals.

Lanckhals was condemned to death and Maximilian was forced to watch the execution.

The Emperor eventually escaped and later took his revenge: he decreed that ‘until the end of time’ the city should be required at its own expense to keep swans on all its lakes and canals.

And why swans? Because swans have long necks – and the Flemish for ‘long neck’ is ‘lange hals’ – or ‘lanckhals’!

And so a city legend was born…

THE FACT? More likely…

The first swans in Bruges go back to the Middle Ages.

In the early 15th century, Bruges bought the right to keep swans from the Count of Flanders.

At that time swans were a symbol of distinction.

The killing or stealing swans was forbidden.

Swans were first mentioned in the city accounts in 1403.

At that time the swans tended to stay on the vests around the city because the canals were the water highways of the city and too busy for the swans.

A Mute Swan (Cygnus olor), preening in Spring.

The mute swan is commonly associated with romance because of its stark white beauty, graceful swimming and the fact that it mates for life.

Yet there are many things most people don’t know about this swan, including that it is not native to North America and it can be one of the most aggressive waterfowl.

I chose the graphic composition, because I wanted something different. Hope you like it too.

I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*)

For all my staring at it, this intriguing rock art looks upside-down to me, a caterpillar-type figure. It also seems to have some heavenly symbols and a small map at right.

Any insights welcome.

I am flying home tomorrow night and thought that leaving India without posting a quick Taj picture can't be right. Right? I had only a day and a half in Agra, but one day was Friday when the Taj is officially closed to public. And the next day I was too busy to go there. However we stopped to see it from across the Yamuna river a couple of times. The first night the water was really still with the gorgeous reflection of the Taj, but it was too dark already and my pictures - taken with the point & shoot camera - turned out very noisy. I'll see if they are usable when I am back home. This I took with the iPhone the next morning, but reflection was nowhere to be found. It was too windy and Yamuna river was not in the "reflective" mood. I guess I will have to come back to India again to take this perfect Taj reflection shot!

But, conveniently, it is Sunday today and my slightly over-processed Taj picture goes straight to Sliders Sunday! Not that I need any excuse to over-process, but still...it is nice to do it "legally" once in a while. HSS, everyone!

Oh, and the black & white version is in the comments.

Without doubt my favourite buses in the East Yorkshire fleet, the Plaxton President have given sterling service to East Yorkshire. Earmarked for withdrawal when the new e400mmcs arrived for the x46 service, social distancing regulations has meant every double decker is needed and so 673, alongside its sisters have had a stay in execution!

An enterprising duck seems to be the early bird while inspecting the options at the kayak rental.

The summer sun ray

shifts through a suspicious tree.

though I walk through the valley of the shadow

It sucks the air

and looks around for me.

The grass speaks.

I hear green chanting all day.

I will fear no evil, fear no evil

The blades extend

and reach my way.

The sky breaks.

It sags and breathes upon my face.

In the presence of mine enemies, mine enemies

The world is full of enemies.

There is no safe place.

~ Anne Sexton, "Noon Walk on the Asylum Lawn"

I wanna run through your wicked garden

Heard that's the place to find you

Cause I'm alive, so alive now

I know the darkness binds you

Can you see without eyes?

Can you speak without lies?

I wanna drink from your naked fountain

I can drown your sorrows

I'm gonna burn, burn you alive now

Out of the chains that bind you

Can you see just like a child?

Can you see just what I want?

Can I bring you back to life?

Are you scared of life?

Burn, burn, burn

Burn your wicked garden down

Burn, burn, burn

Burn your wicked garden to the ground

Can you feel pain inside?

Can you love, can you cry?

The most puicturesque of La Hague's ports is without doubt Port Racine at Saint-Germain-des-Vaux, which is reputed to be the smallest port in France with an area of just 800 m2 and an entrance, between two jetties, just eleven metres wide.

Port Racine bears the name of one of the last pirates that prevailed under Napoleon, Captain François-Médard Racine (1774-1817). In early 1813, he chose this place as a strategic refuge. He built a pier to protect his ships from bad weather and to avoid detection by enemy ships while being able to quickly launch his schooner the the “Embuscade” (the “Ambush”) to attack ships rounding Cape La Hague or sailing to the Channel Islands. After the death of our hero, the wooden defences of Port Racine, although long maintained by fishermen, gradually disintegrated. After several petitions a stone port was finally constructed between 1870 and 1886.

Port Racine shelters the modest boats of local fishermen and fishing trip boats which are tied to ropes that run from one pier to another from a wooden bollard then passed through dike rings before all being tied onto the same post.

Port Racine is first and foremost a harbour for fishermen, with holidaymakers and pleasure craft coming along in summertime, when swimmers sunbathe on the rocks while walkers and hikers take a well-earned rest to contemplate the tiny port.

"I can be your china doll

If you want to see me fall.

Boy, you're so dope,

Your love is deadly.

Tell me life is beautiful,

They all think I have it all.

I'm nothing without you.

All my dreams and all the lights mean

Nothing without you."
