Catskills, NY (2/18/17) - I picked the Overlook trail today because it is considered one of the easier Catskills hikes. Today was anything but easy however. We found out firsthand why on deep soft powder snow, snowshoes is the way to go. Every step we made was the exact definition of postholing - when your foot sinks straight down into the soft ice. This made the hike doubly hard for us as we spent valuable energy pulling out our leg from the snow with every step. I knew about this classic winter hiking mistake but since we didn't own snowshoes, I was just hoping the snow was hard enough that our microspikes would save the day. Nevertheless, despite the reaggravation of the ITBS in my knee and D feeling not so hot at the end of the hike, this was a fun winter hike.

TRAIL OF TIME

Trail of Time

The Trail of Time follows the Rim Trail between Yavapai Geology Museum and Verkamp’s Visitor Center. The Trail of Time is a 4.56 km (2.83 mile) long geologic timeline. Each meter walked on the timeline trail signifies one million years of Grand Canyon's geologic history. Walking the trail gives you a visceral appreciation for the magnitude of geologic time. Bronze markers mark your location in time; every tenth marker is labelled in millions of year! Along the timeline trail are a series of rocks and exhibits that explain how Grand Canyon and its rock formed.

I photographed all the plaques with a number divisible by nine and few in-between.

Day 4. We just crossed the state line and are now in California. That's Jobs Sister on the left, and Freel Peak on the right. We were initially hoping to make it past through Freel Pass today. The snowy forest on the very steep slope would stop us early. The trail would be covered with snow for two or three miles. The new plan was to camp right below the snow line and save the tough part for tomorrow.

We have a community walking trail near our home. I shot this when my wife and I went for a 2 mile walk yesterday.

The Leatherwood Trail is a natural surface, more difficult, hike-only trail that connects to existing trails, including Limestone Gorge and the Louisville Loop. Built by The Parklands trail team, this 0.5-mile trail offers hikers a new, challenging route to extend their trek using a variety of trail combinations.
