the southern california timing association (SCTA) has been hosting land speed racing meets at el mirage dry lake in the mojave desert since 1937. racers come from all over california to test their skills, to see who can go the fastest in 1.3 miles from a standing start. the event is full of colorful cars, bikes and characters.

Out to grab a photograph, very poor timing today, got out the car and it started raining, grabbed a couple of shots, and off to grab a few essentials from the shop, came out into sunshine!

Dated 24. Juni 1918. Seems to be coming out of an archive of a press bureau in Leipzig.
The timing of this picture was just perfect with the dog jumping over this wall which must have been close to 1.70 - 1.80 meter (considering that the men were smaller nearly 100 years ago). Pretty impressive jump!
The instructors are certainly Saxon, so perhaps the picture was taken in Leipzig, but the dog school could have been closer to the front also and the reporter was paying a visit to Saxon troops.
Messenger and medical dogs were popularly used by the Germans during the war and thousands were training to work for the army.
