All car engines have a timing chain, belt or gears. If they get out of time it can cause a bent valve and you are talking major bucks for a valve job, thus the title. My hubby Mike is a hot rodder, always has been and always will be and sometimes I find stuff in the yard that I think makes for a neat photo. In this case the engine was hanging from a hoist and I liked the sun on the rust. Then he told me it was the brand new out of the crate motor I bought for my beloved 1966 Pontiac back in 1984, put 100 miles on it and it blew. It was bad from the factory and Chevrolet refused to warranty it since we put it in a Pontiac and we couldn't afford to rebuild it. I did not even know we still had this, made me sad all over again after all these years. The car was my all time favorite, moved to Texas driving that car with Birdman on the seat beside me all the way from Florida.

TEXTO DO ERNANIB:
Ajude!!! Divulge!!! Dê corda nesses pequenos relógios de vida.

We have time for watching TV, reading the papers or a good book but we never have time for reading a message asking for help.
But there are the ones who don’t have any more time to lose. The ones who didn’t have time to plant. That barely have time to play. That won’t have time to say “I love you, mom, dad”. Because someone, somewhere didn’t have time to read this message, to try to know what it means, to try to know how to help. Because many times who could help don’t have the time, because it’s not an investment with short term interest or because thinks its time is too valuable to spend with somenone who doesn’t have that much time.
Stop for a moment.Try to read and get informed. The children that are about to say their goodbyes to life will be thankful for these few moments you took to help them.. Don’t let their life clocks stop just because you didn’t want to waste your time. Help them! Spread the word! Wind up these little life clocks

Prezado Amigo,a,
Feliz Natal!

A collection of clocks & watches round the house. I never realised I had so many time telling instruments!
I was trying to get this shot with as little people as possible and without any cars driving by. It seemed like once there was a break in traffic someone would walk out of the city hall building or in front of my camera. Then when there were no people a bunch of cars would drive by. After waiting for a while I finally got a break in people and car traffic to get a shot.
This is the city hall building in Portland, Maine.
the southern california timing association (SCTA) has been hosting land speed racing meets at el mirage dry lake in the mojave desert since 1937. racers come from all over california to test their skills, to see who can go the fastest in 1.3 miles from a standing start. the event is full of colorful cars, bikes and characters.

... if you want to avoid getting drenched. Of course, not everyone did want to avoid getting drenched. :)
Before visiting the Shard yesterday I had a wander around the surrounding area and came across these fountains near the river. Actually, if I'm being honest, I'd have to say that I only saw them because I took the wrong exit from London Bridge station. The Shard is right next door if you leave by the correct exit. That would be the exit with a sign saying 'The Shard' and an arrow pointing towards it. :)))
I couldn't decide if I preferred this image in colour or mono, but I think the mono has the edge for me.

Cruising up highway 63 on the first day of our Christmas trip I happened upon the CN backing its train out to Hayward Jct. after switching the LP mill. I missed the caboose (shoving platform) but was able to nab the power going away. CN 5728, December 23, 2011.
This Picasso was originally used by The AA for a field based Inspections engineer, and was part of a fleet of around 60 similar vehicles. At the time of the photo it had covered 90,000 miles and was having a timing belt kit fitted along with new auxilliary drive belt.
It is a 2002 registered 2.0 HDI SX model. More Pictures to follow!
Kim (on the left) is holding Norm (on the right). Norm is one of our garage cats. Last year we noticed that Norm was getting fed at a house around the corner from us. He even seems to have a permanent bowl on the step.
At first he pretended that he didn't know us, but, after he realized that he had been outed as a two-timer (or, really, who knows how many houses have fallen in for his evening-formal good looks and pink-nose charm?) he consented to follow us home on our walks.
Here Kim is carrying him to avoid wear and tear on his paws.
I used a little bit of Topaz Adjust to soften up the shadows.
For the first two Missouri evening primrose (oenothera macrocarpa) in my native wildflower garden this year, I didn't anticipate looking for the blossom, and didn't find it in the jumble of leaves, before it opened; but for this third one I was able to photograph the blossom yesterday evening before it opened this morning. The "grand opening" will last a single day and was only good enough for photographing early this morning. I'll post the "grand opening" photo later. Webster Groves, Missouri.

TEDxBoston keeps upping the game
TEDxBoston learns from each previous year and gets better. Not many conferences evolve. The organizers let the content do the talking (short, sweet intros) and the production value was high + sans major glitch. Not an easy feat. Timing and schedule were also spot on. Start at 1pm and end at 530pm was perfect. It was enough time to hear a solid slate of talks without the weight of a 10 hour, brain-numbing experience. Amen.
The first half was ok.
Second half was better.
Highlights
Best overall talk = mapping memories: It's a new idea, I had to look up optogenetics, and the pitch was a well-honed Laurel and Hardy routine. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optogenetics
Food truck: The two twenty-somethings we doing good for people who need it, and made a real, business-viable service. www.thefreshtruck.org
5 senses: Matt rightly reminded us that the glowing screen ain't the pinnacle of interaction and experience. It's about all five senses. Right on.
Lowlights
Robots++: Half the talk was about Greiner's previous accomplishments, the Rhino surveillance description was borderline insulting, there was no vision, and the message a mess.
3D-extruder toy: Peter's only good line was his last on how you don't know what your calling card or impact will be on the planet, so every detail counts.
Happiness: Do I need an app for that?! It was a branding exercise, content-less, and a sell.
Other thoughts
The TED trained delivery is becoming grating. The affect, the sameness of all the talk structures, the identical arcs make all the stories boring and feel the same.
More than usual, there was a sell component to many of the talks. The hope is that speakers are there to spread ideas, propagate novel approaches versus hocking companies or wares.
And guitarist Eliot Fisk gave a lovely performance.
How do you calculate that your pretty damn amazing service (/www.outline.com) will be critical to 10% of all US public policy making? Love the audacity, can imagine policy impact, but I wanted hard evidence (just like Outline espouses).
Best unintended crossfire was the good and lofty talk by Kerry on 1-year clinical training as part of the peace corps and White's 7 year discovery process of what communities really need (in impoverished areas in India). Big fan of Kerry's pitch but a 1 year tenure in educating doctors and nurses in countries like Ghana is a toe in the water. White described a half dozen year investigation to get one idea into the field and working reliably. It's how NGO's should work (vs the 2-3 years and out and the localities abandon the service). And creating a curriculum could take many years, even a whopping decade, to hone and see quantifiable results. Kerry will get there.
Next year, I want more out-there people and presentations. There should be a few dangerous ideas - concepts that make the audience, the organizers, and the sponsors uncomfortable. TEDxBoston needs to shed the corporate "never offend anyone" and start being a touch more biting and surprising… and offensive.

Overview of the timings from the detector. To simulate the ambient light one IR laser is set in continue mode. The signal level on the detector for this simulated light was about 65 ( right side diagram) the ADC has a range of 2.56V, so 65 means .65V or 650 mV. The left side of the diagram show where the second but now pulsed IR laser come in action. This pulsed light goes now to level 105 or 400 mV above the simulated ambient.
On the diagram you see also how long its take to transfert a data string via the SPI bus. This time is 1.83 usec to transfert one 8 bit ADC value. The total cycle time for 2 measurements is 65.35 usec. On the diagram you see also where the laser drive is on and off. The AVR controller runs on the internal clock of 8 MHz.
Overview of the frame range and the timings with the external VS14 shutter.
Min picture frame 16.5 mm, lens set to min focus point.
Max picture frame 80.0 mm lens set to max focus point.
Minimal useful shutterlag: 3.3 msec ( 0.2msec better than the specs).
Minimal shutter pulswidth: 3.0 msec
Minimal exposure time: <5.0 msec or 1/200 sec. (conform the specs).
Used shutter voltage: 65V
90V Transorb protection diodes used on the magnet:( for safe operation driver).
To adjust the focus you need to open the external shutter. This can be done via 5V continue on the magnet. This is also tested by my new driver. The shutter will perfectly meet the specs and expectations.
