Active Assignment Weekly: March 12 - March 19: Inspiration
The Assignment: I’ve found a lot of inspiration from this group in the short time I’ve been here. I have probably spent more time doing and thinking about photography in the past two weeks than I have the prior two years. More importantly, I’ve been trying all new types of photography I never so much as considered trying, and I’m having fun doing it. And that really is the point, isn’t it? So this week we’re all going to get inspired.
Your assignment is to look through the group pool and find a submission from someone else that inspires you. The inspiration can be for a new technique, a composition or theme, or maybe the entire piece is so impressive that you would be happy just to be able to replicate it. You have two options on how to express your inspiration:
1) Use the technique or style in your own original composition.
2) Use the same composition but add/change an element that you thought would enhance the final image.
Please provide a link to your inspiration, and perhaps a little background on your choice.
Restriction: Let’s delve a little deeper than just “black and white” as a style. I’m going to allow candids because it’s a common hesitation that photographers have (see dare), but you have to do more than just go out and shoot a candid. Find a submission on here first that gives you some inspiration for what or where you’re going to go out and shoot (e.g. Domenick’s recent beach shots. If that inspires you to go to the beach and take pictures of strangers in Speedos, run with it!).
Dare: Step out of your comfort zone. We all have our go to styles, and styles that we never tried because we don’t think we’re good at it. Try it. You might find your calling.
WIT: Somewhat of a failed copy of Basia's shot here: www.flickr.com/photos/bazp1x/6405472851/in/photostream. The inspiration was the wonderful swirls she got with that shot. I see a lot of these types of shots and have wanted to try my own version. I'm happy how this one came out even if it wasn't exactly where I thought I was going with it. Okay, so the set up.. wine glass with water and blue food dye, except we didn't have liquid kind - so.. mixed with water, place in a squirt bottle... and, utter failure. Added some veggie oil to the mix and just kept shooting to try to get the timing right. Slave fired camera right, shot at F/2.8, 1/100 sec., ISO 250. CS4 slight rotation and crop, curves adjustment, desaturated all but blues and cyans, cloned a few spots out, noise reduction, sharpen, resize.
Returning to this captivating spot along the Asturian coast was a long-awaited endeavor. The timing was almost right, with the tides aligning for a chance to get up close and personal with the colossal rock formation and its impressive twin holes during the sunset.
Though the receding tide didn't grant me full access to the desired vantage point, and the tranquil sea posed a challenge in capturing my preferred water textures, the allure of the location remained undeniable. I managed to freeze a moment in time as a wave nearly engulfed the prominent foreground rocks, showcasing the raw power of the ocean.
The light conditions may not have been ideal, and the sky wore a muted hue, but patience was my ally. As the day transitioned into the mystical blue hour, a cold and serene atmosphere descended upon the scene, adding a touch of ethereal charm to the already mesmerizing landscape.
While challenges may have tempered my vision, the essence of this coastal wonder remains untamed and resplendent. Every visit brings something new and a reminder of nature's awe-inspiring forces.

All natural light baby! ;)
Song lyrics have always had a big impact on me, so when I heard Bad Timing by Blue Rodeo this afternoon (still one of my favourite songs of all time) I started to think about how to incorporate the lyrics into a shot. I thought about this shot almost all day - I even went out a bought the 50-1.8 over lunch to take this shot.... I think I'll be able to find some other uses for it as well.

This is our timing sheet for London Transport's "Jubilee-Circle Line Railtour" which operated two trains the second running exacty an hour after the first.
Both trains were made up of the then new but short lived 1983 Jubilee Line tube stock, it was said that one of the trains was litterally on its first revenue earning run.
So as can be seen the high lights of the tour were the traversal of
St Marys Curve
Lillie Bridge Depot
Northfields Depot
White City Depot
Ruislip Depot
Ealing Common Depot
Cockfosters Depot
and all for £10 each.

I spotted these three up by the far end of the lake, all looking quizzically toward me and just asking to have their pictures taken. What could be springier than lambs frolicking in the greenery? It only took a second or two to get the camera ready....
Man...photgraphing lightning is really hard! I took around 50 pictures and this really was the only good one I got! But it is perty neato if I say so myself...
Five minutes earlier, it wouldn't have worked.
Five minutes later, it wouldn't have worked.
But it's nice when you get it right...

Update timings from previous table:

The methode to measure the quench-timings is now done more precise via the camera. I've taken pictures from the manual powersettings at 1/8 power via a graycard. The histogram give a nice peak value. I adjusted the camera to have this peak about 128. Now I drive the flash in TTL mode to have the same value on the histogram. This quenchpuls correspond to the manual power level. To measure the other values, I just adjust the camera F value to the higher stop and repeat this measure. In this manner all the values are defined for the different flashes. This methode is very precise.
For the SB-29-S ringflash is have enabled the 2 sides of the flash and set the slider on the flash to the middle position. This ringflash can be set to a very low output level. Even 1/512 power is possible. But the lower values need a very precise value. It's necessary the have a resolution of 1 us in timing steps to set the small 1/3 steps below 1/128 power. My controller have now the Atmega168 and the resolution is 2 us. Into the next day the Atmega328p will be furnish. Then I will change the resolution to 1 us. The Atmega328p have 2Kb sram. The timingrange will then from 1 to 1500 us with this controller.
On the highpower side not all flashes can furnish the max power below 990 us quench-timings. Therefore I have set this value to - - - into the table. With the Atmega328p, this range will be raised but this long delays are not so interesting for highspeed because the blur. Most of the time the power settings must be below 1/8 power.
I found the results of this test very accurate. If I find other flashes I will add also the timings.

All car engines have a timing chain, belt or gears. If they get out of time it can cause a bent valve and you are talking major bucks for a valve job, thus the title. My hubby Mike is a hot rodder, always has been and always will be and sometimes I find stuff in the yard that I think makes for a neat photo. In this case the engine was hanging from a hoist and I liked the sun on the rust. Then he told me it was the brand new out of the crate motor I bought for my beloved 1966 Pontiac back in 1984, put 100 miles on it and it blew. It was bad from the factory and Chevrolet refused to warranty it since we put it in a Pontiac and we couldn't afford to rebuild it. I did not even know we still had this, made me sad all over again after all these years. The car was my all time favorite, moved to Texas driving that car with Birdman on the seat beside me all the way from Florida.
Well, timing maybe everything but when you are on vacation time just slowly passes by!

Cruising up highway 63 on the first day of our Christmas trip I happened upon the CN backing its train out to Hayward Jct. after switching the LP mill. I missed the caboose (shoving platform) but was able to nab the power going away. CN 5728, December 23, 2011.

TEXTO DO ERNANIB:
Ajude!!! Divulge!!! Dê corda nesses pequenos relógios de vida.

We are all in a hurry to live, not to die.We have time for internet, for friends, for playing, for working and we never have time to stop and help others. We have time for watching TV, reading the papers or a good book but we never have time for reading a message asking for help.
But there are the ones who don’t have any more time to lose. The ones who didn’t have time to plant. That barely have time to play. That won’t have time to say “I love you, mom, dad”. Because someone, somewhere didn’t have time to read this message, to try to know what it means, to try to know how to help. Because many times who could help don’t have the time, because it’s not an investment with short term interest or because thinks its time is too valuable to spend with somenone who doesn’t have that much time.
Stop for a moment.Try to read and get informed. The children that are about to say their goodbyes to life will be thankful for these few moments you took to help them.. Don’t let their life clocks stop just because you didn’t want to waste your time. Help them! Spread the word! Wind up these little life clocks

Prezado Amigo,a,
Feliz Natal!
