Cherry Blossoms of Roosevelt Island

This year’s timing was far better than last year, when we only saw the pink Kwanzan Cherry Trees in bloom. This year we saw both, the pink Kwanzan and the equally beautiful white Yoshino trees in full bloom. Once again, the weather forecast was for a beautifully clear day, but overnight and the morning was to be both cold (at freezing) and windy (20-30 mph winds). But luck was with us, as the sun came out the temperature rose comfortably and the winds subsided, so by the late morning it was comfortable for leisurely walking and stopping for numerous photos. And did we ever walk, we covered about three quarters of the circumference of the island. The island is approximately 2 miles long by 1/8 mile wide at its widest point. The circumference is around 4.2 miles, which means we walked around 3 ½ miles plus the many ins and outs to various sites along the way.

Of course, we stopped at the Four Freedoms State Park at the south end, walked beneath the Cherry Trees along the west side of the island, stopped for lunch at the excellent Cornell University Cafeteria and then north to the lighthouse at the northern end and the Hellgate. Getting to the island and off we opted for the subway as the wait to get on the aerial was excessive due to the Cherry Blossom season. Tourist traffic was once again heavy in various areas, however on weekends it would have been far worse, and would have made photography impossible.

If my schedule had been pushed back by an hour or even 30 minutes, I wouldn't have been able to see Aso at all. What a lucky window of opportunity that was. (And expensive, what with taking taxis up AND down the mountain! But it was well worth the expense for me.)
