Just a little bit more TS3 porn for those who are in to it. In the end it was a relatively easy job to remove the flywheel and bell housing to reveal the chain, which it transpired, had indeed managed to hop some teeth, putting the injection pump timing about 120 degrees out. The spring / hydraulic adjuster is about half way in travel so should be OK. The question is will it do it again?
