The intricate valve-gear of 3807, correct to the millimetre to that of its life-size counterpart is captured in a momentary stationary state. (All scaled down of course!)

Today (2nd January 2012) is the 30th anniversary of the last Deltic-hauled train in BR service.

My timing sheet for 1F50, the "Deltic Scotsman Farewell" which ran from London King's Cross to Edinburgh and back on 2nd January 1982.

The train was organised by British Rail as the final service to be hauled by the legendary Deltic locomotives. 55015 TULYAR took the train north and the final run home was behind 55022 ROYAL SCOTS GREY. 55009 ALYCIDON was the standby locomotive, travelling up to Newcastle in case of any problems with the booked engines.

Note the weather conditions (which were frankly appalling) and the spirited run home after a dead stop at Hitchin. The Deltic gave everything on this final section and truly went out in fine style.

Here is why I named this image "Perfect Timing" . It was the morning of my third wedding anniversary and we were camping at the beach in South Carolina. Just before sunrise, we were walking along on the beach and found this sand dollar in the surf. I quickly positioned it in a good spot and laid down on the sand to wait for the sun to come over the horizon. No more than 2 minutes after finding it, I took this photo. I love how the golden light is bouncing off of the sand and sand dollar.

Our Daily Challenge: Timing is everything. Yes, as my daughter so kindly pointed out, this is out of focus. My two comments: One: catching these fast little bullets speeding through the air is some kind of challenging. Two: in spite of the blurriness, I like it. So there.

A cutoff from the Pa'rus Trail took me to this classic Zion view.

I'm standing on the patio behind the Zion Human History Museum, which served as the park's visitor center until the current building was built in 2000.

On the left, at an elevation of 7810' the West Temple is the highest point in the Zion Canyon area. A nearby sign indicates it's just two miles from this spot, but 3800' higher. The Altar of Sacrifice (7505') is the formation on the right with the red streak.

This is a nice morning shot, but unfortunately, I happened to be there on a rare morning without sunshine.

As the sun was setting behind me, the solitary bush eventually remained the only lit object in the foreground, a few minutes later the effect was gone...

It's the fact that time is so fleeting that makes it doubly beautiful to me sometimes...

That's Navaho Mountain in the background, taken at lake Powell in Arizona with a EOS-1DS camera at 1/64 s, F 18.00

This morning sunrise was gorgeous and I can't wait to share more pictures from it. I was more or less interested in the burn of the clouds and how it contrasted well with the bridge.

As I was taking the shots, two big rigs, both going opposite directions came into my frame. At the same time, a pigeon flew by in my frame as well.

Quite the lucky picture!

As David says, "one of my #luckysnapshot of the day."

In live dance photography, timing really is everything! This may be one of my favorite shots of live dance ever - simply because of the timing of the shot.

Man! I'm alive! I caught the upper respiratory plague from a Typhoid Mary who came into work sick and spread the joy around. I haven't processed a photo in a weeks time! That will tell you how sick I was. And, thanks to the homeopathic remedies I swear by, I am healthier, and more well than those who fell sick before me.

Blurb about the photo taken at Japan Fest 2016: This is Takahamaryu Mitsujuroku, stage name given by her Headmaster Takahamaryu Mitsutae (one of the most prominent Japanese Classical Dancer in Japan). Master Mitsujuroku posses the highest teaching certificate "Shihan" from the Takahamaryu Dance Discipline.

On Day 20, my timing was off and most of my bus streaks turned out like this (or worse).

Song lyrics have always had a big impact on me, so when I heard Bad Timing by Blue Rodeo this afternoon (still one of my favourite songs of all time) I started to think about how to incorporate the lyrics into a shot. I thought about this shot almost all day - I even went out a bought the 50-1.8 over lunch to take this shot.... I think I'll be able to find some other uses for it as well.

Active Assignment Weekly: March 12 - March 19: Inspiration

The Assignment: I’ve found a lot of inspiration from this group in the short time I’ve been here. I have probably spent more time doing and thinking about photography in the past two weeks than I have the prior two years. More importantly, I’ve been trying all new types of photography I never so much as considered trying, and I’m having fun doing it. And that really is the point, isn’t it? So this week we’re all going to get inspired.

Your assignment is to look through the group pool and find a submission from someone else that inspires you. The inspiration can be for a new technique, a composition or theme, or maybe the entire piece is so impressive that you would be happy just to be able to replicate it. You have two options on how to express your inspiration:

1) Use the technique or style in your own original composition.

2) Use the same composition but add/change an element that you thought would enhance the final image.

Please provide a link to your inspiration, and perhaps a little background on your choice.

Restriction: Let’s delve a little deeper than just “black and white” as a style. I’m going to allow candids because it’s a common hesitation that photographers have (see dare), but you have to do more than just go out and shoot a candid. Find a submission on here first that gives you some inspiration for what or where you’re going to go out and shoot (e.g. Domenick’s recent beach shots. If that inspires you to go to the beach and take pictures of strangers in Speedos, run with it!).

Dare: Step out of your comfort zone. We all have our go to styles, and styles that we never tried because we don’t think we’re good at it. Try it. You might find your calling.

WIT: Somewhat of a failed copy of Basia's shot here: www.flickr.com/photos/bazp1x/6405472851/in/photostream. The inspiration was the wonderful swirls she got with that shot. I see a lot of these types of shots and have wanted to try my own version. I'm happy how this one came out even if it wasn't exactly where I thought I was going with it. Okay, so the set up.. wine glass with water and blue food dye, except we didn't have liquid kind - so.. mixed with water, place in a squirt bottle... and, utter failure. Added some veggie oil to the mix and just kept shooting to try to get the timing right. Slave fired camera right, shot at F/2.8, 1/100 sec., ISO 250. CS4 slight rotation and crop, curves adjustment, desaturated all but blues and cyans, cloned a few spots out, noise reduction, sharpen, resize.
