Spot-lighting monsters in Midtown Manhattan.
A few minutes of "lucky timing", or you could have been reading my obituary today.
So you'd recall that Toronto had a one-two punch of 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24 inches) of snow last week. The snow accumulated on the roof slid towards the edge very much like a slow moving glacier. As there is invariably heat loss from the heating inside the home via the roof, the snow on the roof would eventually melt on warmer days. Usually the melting snow drips into the eavestroughs and down pipes. But then after a super heavy snowfall, the melting snow might slide over the edge of the roof and then re-freeze itself once it's exposed to the cold air, forming beautiful icicles that you see outside of Nordic or Alpine homes.
In any case, a sizeable chunk of ice fell off the roof in today's warmer (+4C) weather. I went outside to clear it from the driveway, then went back into the house to work. I was outside for about 10 minutes.
A few minutes after I returned to the house, a much much bigger chunk of ice crashed down the exact spot where I was. I estimate the ice chunk must be at least 50 to 100 lbs (20 to 45 kg), falling from a height of over 30 feet (10 meter). If that chunk of ice had fallen on my head, it probably would have crushed my skull, killing me instantly or at least turning me into a vegetable.
When the ice fell, the entire ground and the house shook, making a huge sound that startled mother, me and my neighbour.
I'm a very lucky man.
The campaign to get a good, well-lit photo of the George Robert White Memorial continues. With the aid of sun-spotting software, I'm starting to dial in on times of the day and of the year when I've got a chance of a good photo.
The photo I want continues to elude. But if you hit the Public Garden between 10 and 11, it's possible to get something nice from this angle. If you're willing to climb up on top of the marble edging of the fountain.

Opened in 1926, the Orpheum is the grand dame of theatres on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles. Originally a vaudeville house, then a movie theatre, then a live performance venue. Now it's used for private screenings, special performances and for location shoots.
Three million dollars was put into a restoration, making it the best-preserved theatre in the Historic Core.

The perspective was deliberate ... The central core of the Lanes shopping complex in Carlisle. The building has a full height central atrium, and clerestory glazing lights the three floors of the interior.
There was a lot of this happening and it's fun getting the timing right! Trying out a pre-loved Tamron 150-600mm lens at the local Osprey nest. Quite pleased with it so far. I've seen the previous owners shots so know its potential. The Osprey pair are doing well, the male brought in a fish, landing gently on the nest, then took off again and dive bombed crows in the vicinity. The female appeared to be feeding young, but no heads apparent above the nest yet.
The timing was perfect this morning as the sun was just rising above the canyon. What was especially striking was the glowing light on the shaded walls.

Missy was so good at sniffing out abandoned tennis balls and now it looks as if she passed her skills onto her friend Tasku.
It helps a lot that I can still walk with Tasku and Taivas A forest walk is not the same without a dog to share it with.

This photo was taken in the early evening on April 11th of 2013.
Maybe due to grown up in a small countryside little village, I am so attached to the nature. Therefore, anything to do with nature, not only got my attention easily, but also easily to allow myself for in love with natural thing as little as small stuff or as big as mountain, sea and most ordinary things as clouds which you can view it almost everywhere and almost most of the time.
Typical and one of the stressful day for me, lot much chance for me to go out to focus on my 365 project lately however, I still not given up and trying my best to keep myself up in the loop.
Kind of glad that I took that little 5 minutes break to step outside while I were busy at times, so I catches this incredible sunset clouds in the sky. It is so amazing how little and how tiny thing can make you so happy. That doesn't need to make you to do much effort or take much time at all, just a minute or two, then your happiness is in your hand! So incredible!
The feel of this particular shot of this image somehow reflects on the status of my personal emotional stage. All these different elements in this shot, interestingly enough seems play some kind of important role of its self which is in replaceable. I took couple more after this first shot. But without second thought to shout out, this is IT!
No matter it is the pretty dramatical clouds with these amazing pattern and color, or the just in time flying in birds, the way how they flapped the wings, and even how little of the street light pole I got and the exact position I had captured the leaves. It seems to be so perfect, even one second's difference will not be the same any more. Wow! How truthful is that? Is this sounds just like our own life in some ways? Agree?

While on my way to work this morning, I saw SOR 496 running down the Burford Spur. With 15 minutes to spare and my office being only a minute from this shot, a quick stop for a photo was in order.
It was a little gloomy for my liking but being able to shoot a train before work was pretty slick.

Taken at the lakefront in Lincoln Park yesterday during a Strobist meetup with models. This girl was standing on the edge of the concrete wall along Lake Michigan actually waiting for the waves to hit the wall and get a little splash of water but she she didn't expect the lake would be so generous. She got what she came there for. And she had a lot of fun. Me too. Who needs models when you capture moments like this?

Timing going up into Tenby for lunch perfectly for an encounter with the 351, I wasn't sure what the vehicle offering would be as it's a company I'm unfamiliar with.
Lo and behold, the newest bus on the books emerged under the railway viaduct. Unfortunately I didn't see it was a Hanover display fitted so only a portion of the display is visible....
YY74RYM enters Tenby on a short 351 from Amroth, Pleasant Valley and Saundersfoot.
I'd been taking a few shots of this butterfly on the buddleja and was delighted to get one just as the butterfly took off and still to have good focus on the butterfly. I claim no credit it was jammy timing.
Railfanning can be a frustrating game. Sure you clear your schedule to be in position, you make sure to leave early for the drive then the hike, you trek down to the river, carefully pick out your spot covering your pants in tiny pickers in the process, and finally pinch yourself at the realization that there is actually a train on the way with matching power on a beautiful sunny October day. With your cushion of time you check the settings again and fire a few test shots (1). The water is gloriously smooth for the half hour you wait. Finally you can hear the horn as the train approaches the bridge. A glance over your shoulder reveals a pontoon full of daisy pickers putting into the scene trashing the reflection (2). OK, L517 has to slow down for the bridge, maybe there is time and things start to clear up until (3) another boat heads downstream to make sure the reflection is spoiled.
It's a good thing the posse of photographers lining the shore left the rocket launchers at home. Of course, if looks could kill...
That's OK perhaps the stars will align for another chance at this in my lifetime, or not. October 17, 2021.

Once upon a time, Genesee & Wyoming started a hot boxcar train between Portland and Los Angeles, working with Union Pacific. It did not last long. One of the northbound trains passes our house in Klamath Falls during 2001.
The drive home tonight was amazing. It was so wonderful to see Rainier out and shining. As I got closing to home and the sun started to approach the horizon there was a nice glow to the mountain that I wish I had the words to descibe. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera ready to capture it. I decided to give it a shot and called Nora and said to meet me in the front of the house with my gear which she did with a smile. After that it was zoom zoom zoom to a location that gave me a clear shot. I pulled into the parking lot and proceeded to run about 500 yards to a clearning between the trees. Unfortunately I missed the glow I was looking for but did get the chance to see the moon really starting to pop. I had to do a quick bracketed exposure so that I could get both the moon and the forground exposed properly and this is the result.
Sometimes I think that I just find myself with the most beautiful views and no camera. Other times I find myself with a camera and that is it.... haha.
