We were on a "Turkish Delight Steam Tour" starting in Istanbul & with our own train (baggage van, day coach & restaurant car) we did a large circuit of Turkey via Ankara, Sivas, Malatya, Alanya, Adana & Konya ending in Izmir & pulled by a variety of steam engines.
Starting to look a little uncared for, though to be fair it was a horribly gloomy morning, TCDD Skyliner 2-10-0 56305, built by Vulcan Iron Works of Pennsylvania in 1947, is seen shortly after arrival with a southbound freight at Karabuk, Turkey on 12 March 1984.

Turkish Railways (TCDD) 2-6-0 34014 shunting at Zonguldak on 13 January 1976.
34014 was built by Hanomag in 1914 for the Baghdad Railway as #633. This class originally came with a fifth weight distributing axle between the second and third drivers, the gap for which can be seen in this image.

With a loaded iron ore train from Suveren in the direction of Elâzığ TCDD DE 24219 (Tülomsaş/MTE) crosses river Murat east of Palu at August 19, 2024. We are on the main line from Malatya via Yolçati and Elâzığ to Tatvan and on the other side of Lake Van into Iran.
Bulk goods such as ore or coal are often loaded into old 20' open-top containers at TCDD. On August 22, 2024, TCDD E68031 pulled such a train northwest of Kangal on the newly constructed southern line between Çetinkaya and Tecer. The locomotive is an electric locomotive developed by Hyundai Rotem, 80 of them were delivered to TCDD between 2013 and 2015. Most of the locomotives were built at Tülomsaş.

No idea how I managed to wake up to catch this train, the 0514hrs from Alsehir to Manisa in Turkey, the last line work for this nicely proportioned 2-6-0. Ten were built for the Turkish Railways (TCDD) by Swedish builder Nydqvist & Holm AB (Nohab) in 1930, loosely based around the DR24 class design.
Taken on 2 April 1984, by this time only 34054 and one other were still active and 34054 was based at Manisa solely to operate the one daily return service to Alasehir. My notes are not exact, but suggest this was taken at Turgutlu - "at this time of year the sun is OK from Turgutlu onwards".

Irmak junction in the evening at June 11, 2014: TCDD class DE 33 063 (GT26CW-2/EMD/Tülomsaş) together with a class DE 22 000 (G26CW-2/GM-EMD/Tülomsaş) are waiting with a freight train towards Ankara to cross "Doğu Ekspresi" to Kars. In the background two more class DE 33 000 locos can be seen.

A most welcome arrival, not anticipated by the Yolcu Rehberi, is BR44001 44062 (Prussian G8) 07.48 Gümüşgün-Burdur with single coach possibly overnight, long-distance into Mediterranean Anatolia then ecs.
My TCDD timetable, additionally hand-written, attracted much interest from the local 'Burdur System' staff, one wishing to make a careful study.
By chance I had earlier spoken to the 'right person' at Izmir Alsançak to purchase one!

With Ataturk's changes, from 1930 onwards a range of 5-drive locomotives with wheels of moderate sizes were used, favoring tractive effort over speed on the TCDD network which was located mainly in mountains with many slopes and curves; Despite their high tractive effort, the TCDD has to use two or three of these locomotives to transport the heaviest trains, so a similar approach was made for the type 57001, designed and built shortly after. The museum has four locomotives of this type that were put into service in the 1930s, including this 2-10-2 No. 57023, which was part of a batch of 27 manufactured in Germany. Its design is specific to Türkiye, but uses standard German parts. Although they appear to be the largest locomotives in the museum, these locomotives are actually light machines, with many axles to distribute the weight of the boiler as much as possible. They were destined for the old tracks of the former Ottoman railways around İzmir and many worked on the Aydın line replacing many of the smaller and obsolete locomotives of the Ottoman railways.
That afternoon, I took the Karaman - Halkalı high-speed train which brought me from Konya to İstanbul in about five hours. It was covered (like the majority of İstanbul-bound services) by a member of the HT65000 class (courtesy of CAF in Spain), in this case HT65004. I got out at Söğütlüçeşme (kids, don't try pronouncing that at home! 😃) as it more or less serves as the central station for long-distance traffic in İstanbul - in even more central places like Üsküdar or Sirkeci, only suburban Marmaray trains call - but there are good connections to those at Söğütlüçeşme.
İstanbul is where my trip ended. It wasn't supposed to: I had a flight booked for Tehran 🇮🇷 a few days later, for three weeks of sightseeing with a group of friends and colleagues (and maybe some railway photography as well), but for whatever reason, my visa application was rejected, and my efforts to remedy that in İstanbul were to no avail. So what followed were three days of stress and frustration, and then a flight back home instead of onwards... Söğütlüçeşme, 29-03-2022.
I had come to Sandıklı for the charming water tower, as DE24 418 (a slightly older class than the DE22000 that hauls the Konya Mavi Treni, built between 1970 and 1984 and designed by the French MTE despite the American looks) is departing with the «Pamukkale Express» from Eskişehir to Denizli.
