....waren für mich 2025 absolutes Neuland. So kam es, das im April diesen Jahres, fünf Süddeutsche Fotografen erste Fotoversuche in der Türkei machten. Das eigentliche Zielgebiet war Elazig, aber da dort während unserem Aufenthalt dort das Wetter durchgehend schlecht war, suchten wir eine Alternative.
Diese fanden wir in Form von Tageszügen von Ankara nach Denizli u.z. mit einem Zug pro Tag und Richtung. Genug um den Tag gut zu füllen da man locker hinterher kommt.
Die 24 366 der TCDD hat hier mit ihrem Zug den Großteil ihrer Strecke bereits zurück gelegt und erreicht gleich den kleinen Ort Çardak um dann gut 1h später in Denizli anzukommen.
De elektrische locomotief uit 1955 arriveert met een goederentrein. In 1955 leverden de Franse industrie drie locomotieven voor 25 kV 50 Hz. Het waren de eerste elektrische locomotieven voor Turkije.
The Taurus portion of the Bagdad railway built by Germans in the beginning of the 20th century is one of the busiest rail lines in Turkey. In 2014 the railway infrastructure did preserve some remains of the heritage, the semaphore in the foreground is one example.
A container train from the mediteranien port Mersin hauled by DE22 045 has passed Karaisalıbucağı on the southern Taurus approach and heads northbound.
Zwischen Elâzığ und Tatvan fährt an drei Tagen in der Woche noch ein lokbespannter "Bölgesel" (Nahverkehrszug). In den meisten Landesteilen der Türkei haben ansonsten schon Triebwagen vergleichbare Leistungen übernommen. Am 19.08.2024 rollt TCDD DE24117 mit dem Bölgesel 52601 Tatvan - Elâzığ unweit İçme entlang des Stausees Keban Baraij.
A loco hauled "Bölgesel" (local train) runs between Elâzığ and Tatvan three days a week. In most parts of Türkiye, railcars have already taken over such comparable services. On August 19, 2024, TCDD DE24117 rolls with the Bölgesel 52601 Tatvan - Elâzığ not far from İçme along the Keban Baraij reservoir.
A heavy coil train climps up the soutern ramp of the Taurus mountain approach. The train is lead by a DE33010, a DE22 shoves. In diesel times a passing of a hardworking trains was quite impressive. Nowadys this line is electrified.
Der "Güney Kurtalan Ekspresi" verbindet fünf Mal pro Woche das ostanatolische Kurtalan und Großstädte wie Diyarbakir mit der Türkischen Hauptstadt Ankara in einer Reisezeit von über 26 Stunden. Bereits nach sieben Stunden Fahrzeit hatte der Zug mit der Nummer 52013 am 18.08.2024 jedoch bei Uluova schon eine gute Stunde Verspätung eingefahren. TCDD DE 22062 (Tülomsas/EMD G26CW-2) bremst den Zug deutlich hörbar das starke Gefälle von einem ca. 1.250 m hoch gelegenen Pass herunter.
The "Güney Kurtalan Ekspresi" connects Kurtalan and other big cities like Diyarbakir in Eastern Anatolia with Turkish Metropol Ankara five times a week. The train needs 26 hours for his journey. At August 18, 2024 the train was already one hour late after seven hours travelling time when TCDD DE 22062 (Tülomsas/EMD G26CW-2) slows down the train with number 52013 from a 1,250 m high summit near Uluova.
Early hours over Mediterranean Anatolia provide splendid backdrop for BR56501 56528 hurrying 04.22 Dinar-Eğirdir service on the 'Burdur System' of lines.
Our goal here was to capture a chimney first departure from Isparta and 56528 first coming along was unexpected. the inclusion of our two Renault 'Twelves' might therefore be excused! These proved to be rugged workhorses, also at that time the vehicle of choice by some public authorities often rather interested in our behaviours!

E68 023 fährt mit einem so klassischen Grubenzug in Richtung Mittelmeer. Der Zug rollt gerade durch das Tal zwischen Yeşilhisar und Araplı - einem wunderbaren flecken Erde in der Mitte der Türkei.
An diesem Tag lief es einfach, die Züge kamen immer genau dann wenn wir sie gebraucht haben. So hat sich die kleine Wanderung zu dieser Stelle auch gelohnt - wir hatten schon das schlimmste befürchtet.

Was für ein Spektakel! Mit 48 hämmerndern Zylindern und kaum 40 km/h befördern drei (mit Schublok!) DE 22000 einen beladenen Erzzug die Rampe nach İzzettin hoch. Dort wird die Schublok abgehängt und kehrt gleich solo zurück.
Dieser Streckenabschnitt, zwischen Kayseri und Ankara, ist fantastisch. Mit 6 Kehren windet sich die Bahn eine Geländekante hinauf um Höhe zu gewinnen.

Statt des schon überfälligen Doğu Ekspresi nach Kars oder einem Erzzug nach Demirdağ überraschte am Morgen des 24.08.2024 zwischen Cürek und Demirdağ ein mit TCDD E 68047 (Hyundai Rotem/Tülomsaş/Škoda) bespannter Güterzug gen Divriği die beiden wartenden Fotografen.
Instead of the already delayed Doğu Ekspresi to Kars or an ore train to Demirdağ, on the morning of August 24th, 2024 between Cürek and Demirdağ, a freight train hauled by TCDD E 68047 (Hyundai Rotem/Tülomsaş/Škoda) to Divriği surprised the two waiting photographers.

The next day was for sightseeing in the Phrygian Valley, but seeing as the railway runs relatively close by those monuments, I made some time to await the «Pamukkale Express» in both directions. While on the portion of the line south of Afyon (where we were earlier) it is the only passenger train, there is another pair of trains north of Afyon - but that other one is a boring Anadolu class DMU running at times that are unphotogenic in March.
When I got here, I got into a friendly, but unhelpful 40-minute conversation with some locals who tried to warn me that I'd surely be arrested if I wandered around here, despite the fact that I was neither near an ancient excavation site nor near a police or military exercise terrain, but just in some scrublands. When they finally let me go, there was no time anymore to undertake the 20-minute walk to the spot I had aimed for, so once again I had to improvise - that's why the entire train isn't visible here. Anyway, the loco on duty is DE24 341. Çöğürler, 28-03-2022.
The ornate steel trestle bridge rises above azure waters of Lake Eğirdir of Mediterranean Anatolia.
Then a steam powered train worked daily into Eğirdir, on this occasion by 56507 waiting at the station upon the 18.00hrs passenger to Dinar.
Such views today are marred by new building development and rail services are sadly no more.

A pair of new WLC (Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo) 187 TRAXX locomotives with a Montansped Company container train on the way south.
The container wagons are registered in Turkey - Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları (TCDD). Such vehicles are very rare in Austria.

Nördlich von Divriği liegen die größten Eisenerz-Vorkommen der Türkei. Das sorgt auch auf der Schiene für einiges an Güterverkehr, weshalb auch die Bahnstrecke von Westen kommend bis Divriği elektrifiziert ist. Die Verladeanlagen und auch weiterverarbeitende Industrie liegt im 4 km entfernten Demirdağ. Vor der entsprechenden Kulisse rollen am Morgen des 23.08.2024 die beiden von der TCDD an das private EVU Omsan vermieteten E 43040 und E 43028 (Tülomsaş /Toshiba) mit einem leeren Erzzug in den Bahnhof Demirdağ ein.
Turkey's largest iron ore deposits are located north of Divriği. This also ensures a lot of freight traffic on the rails, so the railway line from the west to Divriği is also electrified. The loading facilities and processing industry are located in Demirdağ, 4 km away. In the morning of August 23rd, 2024, the two E 43040 and E 43028 (Tülomsaş / Toshiba), rented by the TCDD to the private railway company Omsan, rolled into Demirdağ station with an empty ore train.

es la cuarta máquina de guerra en Çamlık y también es estadounidense. Pertenece al tipo S200. Este tipo fue enviado a Oriente Medio, Irak e Irán para apoyar a las fuerzas británicas de Oriente Medio. Se entregaron 29 al TCDD durante la guerra y posteriormente el TCDD compró 25 adicionales. El S200 se podía convertir fácilmente para quemar carbón o petróleo y, de hecho, el TCDD convirtió algunos de ellos a petróleo para usarlos principalmente en el sur, al este del país alrededor de Gaziantep.
This is the fourth war machine at Çamlık and it is also American. It belongs to the S200 type. This type was sent to the Middle East, Iraq and Iran to support the British forces in the Middle East. 29 were delivered to the TCDD during the war and the TCDD subsequently purchased an additional 25. The S200 could easily be converted to burn coal or oil and indeed the TCDD converted some of them to oil for use mainly in the south, east of the country around Gaziantep.
De Amerikaanse 'Skyliner' (asindeling 1'E) voert rangeeropdrachten uit in Çatalağzı, een mijnstadje vlakbij de kust aan de Zwarte Zee. De bijnaam ontleenden de locomotieven aan de doorlopende dombekleding op de ketel en aan het feit dat ze in de Verenigde Staten waren gebouwd. Vulcan Iron Works in Pennsylvania bouwde 83 stuks voor de Turkse spoorwegen tussen 1947 en 1949.
The American 'Skyliner' (2-10-0) performs shunting duties in Çatalağzı, a coalmining town near the Black Sea coast. Vulcan Iron Works in Pennsylvania built 83 units for the Turkish Railways between 1947 and 1949.

Auf den Neubaustrecken der Türkei (Istanbul - Ankara / Konya bzw. Ankara - Sivas) gibt es im Moment lediglich zwei Zugtypen. Einerseits die Velearo von Siemens, andererseits die von CAF gebauten 65000er. Begonneh hat damals alles mit den CAF Kisten.
Ich halte die Velaro, nicht zuletzt wegen der Farbgebung, für deutlich fotogener als die CAF. Aber wenn man an der NBS steht kommt halt auch immer mal wieder etwas von CAF vorbei. Zwischen Ankara und Istanbul ist der Verkehr ungefähr 50/50 aufgeteilt.
Wir haben uns an diesem Tag vor allem auf die Velaro und auf Züge auf der paralellen Bestandsstrecke konzetriert ... aber so ein CAF ging ab und an trotzdem mal ins Netz ;).
A powerful duo, TCCD class 56.086 2-10-0 and 46.058 2-8-2 depart from Afyon on a long freight to Konya, 27th September 1977.
Diesellocomotief DH 27003 van de Turkse Staatsspoorwegen (TCDD) arriveert in Zonguldak met een reizigerstrein uit Çatalağzı. Serie DH 27 was een zesassige (Co’Co’) versie van de Duitse V200 en was van een soortgelijk ontwerp geleverd aan Joegoslavië. Opmerkelijk was de middencabine met twee huiven met elk een Maybach MD655 V12-dieselmotor. Elke motor bevond zich boven een draaistel en de overbrenging naar het wiel was via Voith-transmissie. De maximum snelheid was 100 km/h. In 1961 werden drie exemplaren door Krauss-Maffei geleverd en getest als alternatief voor een Amerikaans product. De uiteindelijke bestelling werd gedaan bij General Electric. Ze werden in 1982 buiten dienst gesteld.

Class DH 27 was a six-axle version of the West German Class V200 and of a similar design delivered to Yugoslavia.
The class had a body design with a single centre cab, and two long hoods housing each a Maybach MD655 V12 diesel engine. They were geared for heavy gradients, resulting in a top speed of only 100 km/h. Three units were purchased from German firm Krauss-Maffei in 1961 and tested as an alternative to an American type. However, no additional units were ever ordered and instead the main order went to General Electric. All three locomotives remained in regular service until 1982.

A nostalgic return to rail centres visited a decade before under steam could not exclude the rural splendour of the 'Burdur System' here seeing loco DE18-115 depart 08.30 service to Karakuyu from the Burdur terminus.

The German Philipp Holzmann company was responsible for the construction on the Taurus-section, part of the Berlin-Baghdad railroad project, some 70 kilometres north of Adana. The most difficult phase of the project was crossing the Belemedik plateau in the Taurus Mountains. To accommodate all necessary personnel, approx. in 1907 a large shanty town was built by the Germans (Holzmann company) at Karapınar railway stop (later called Belemedik) in Pozantı district.
Between 1907 and 1914 estimated 3,500 Germans and Austrians where living here. They were engineers, technicians and railway workers (special railway construction platoon 5, Eisenbahnbau-Sonderkommando 5), often with their families. For the Turks in the vicinity, the shanty town was considered the “German city”. It was designed to meet all the needs of the company’s employees. A hospital was built to the state of the art of those days (employing German doctors and nurses), a German church, a mosque, a German school for the children of the employees, a cinema, waterpipes/drainage system, big stone houses, etc. and even a brothel (about 1 km outside of the city). Belemedik was also one of the first cities in the Ottoman Empire that enjoyed 24h electricity thanks to a power station,
Starting as a village, Belemedik gained the appearance of a regular provincial town. Next to Germans and Austrians, a number of Turkish people were attracted to settle here as well as traders. Holzmann had also employed locally many Greeks, Armenians and Turkishs workers and in addition, the Ottoman government provided prisoners (including Armenians in 1914/15) to work in the tunnels. Hence, there was also a detachment of Turkish soldiers in the small city. From 1916 on, an unknown (to me) number of Allied POWs were based here to support the on-going construction works. As stone houses were not common in that region in those days, they have most likely been accommodated in tents or wooden/shanty houses (of which nothing has remained). At its peak in 1917/18, nearly 35,000 people populated Belemedik.
The railway station Karapınar was opened in 1912. Even by then, the site was called Belemedik. According to one source the name Belemedik is the corrupt form of the Turkish word Bilemedik meaning We couldn't guess. During the railway construction, each tunnel was bored by two teams working at the opposite sides of the tunnel. The teams were required to meet at the mid point. When for any reason, one team failed to accomplish the task, the excuse was the word bilemedik and in German pronunciation it became belemedik. Belemedik was the end of the railway until the completition of the Giaudere (Varda)-viaduct at Hacıkırı in September 1918, the connection to Adana (Durak) was openend in early October 1918 finishing the railway works just before the end of the war. The section is using 37 tunnels with a cumulative length 14.4 km).
Work on the railway was long and hard. In the eight years of construction in the area 41 German citizens people lost their lives (accidents, slides and diseases). In 2005, the German Honorary Consul Dr. Teyfik Kısacık bought land and with the help of German company Pratiker (Metro AG) as well as locals opened in September 30, 2005 a new German cemetery. However, if there are any tombs/graves at all in this ground is doubtful. Probably it is more a memorial ground. The memorial plate which was errected was brought from Hacikiri (those dead were brought to the German central cemetery in Tarabya, Istanbul).
The number of Allied POWs who died here is unknown to me. If you know, pls. leave a comment. Those tombs of POWs which were found after WW1 were transferred to Baghdad North cemetery (most likely for white British and Australian soldiers rather than for British-Indian soldiers who might have been cremated or where just buried anywhere).
The Belemedik station was closed at the end of the First World War. After WW I, Belemedik was occupied by the French army, with its headquarters in Pozantı. The French occupying force used Belemedik as a site for a military hospital in which the commander's wife Mme. Mesnil was working as a nurse. Turkish Nationalists (also called Kemalist) captured Belemedik on 10 April 1920. On 28 May the rest of the French troops also surrendered during the battle of Karboğazı. During the rest of the independence war, the hospital in Belemedik was used by the Turkish Nationalists. In the turmoil which followed, the area was widely abandoned and almost forgotten. Until Atatürk was able to establish the modern Turkey, it was said that bandits were living in the remains of the houses and later locals from the region used Belemedik houses as source for cheap construction material. As result, almost nothing of the “German town” has remained (btw., Holzmann went bankrupt in 2002). Still existing are the fundaments of the generator, the chimney of the German hospital and a few stone houses in different conditions (either ruins or to house animals). Today, there is merely a small hamlet left with friendly and helpful inhabitants.

TCDD engineers were mostly trained by Germans and adhered to the practice of using standard German types, although adapted to Turkish working conditions. As Türkiye had no domestic manufacturers, TCDD had to import all its locomotives and order them from various European manufacturers. The 2-6-0 No 34056 (turntable) was manufactured by Nohab in Denmark in 1930. It was derived from the German railway type 24 and was particularly suitable for light freight and passenger traffic --the 4th locomotive from the left. The 2-10-0 No 46005 is another Henshel product from 1932 and also custom made for Türkiye. These engines were designed using component designs from standard German locomotives of the time, such as the P8 and G8. In fact, the first batch looks like a "stretched P8" - there is a photograph of this machine in this series.

Como Turquía no poseía fabricantes nacionales, TCDD tuvo que importar todas sus locomotoras y encargarlas a varios fabricantes europeos. El 2-6-0 No 34056 (plataforma giratoria) fue fabricado por Nohab en Dinamarca en 1930. Se deriva del ferrocarril alemán tipo 24 y era especialmente adecuado para el tráfico ligero de mercancías y pasajeros (la 4ª locomotora por la izquierda).La 2-10-0 No 46005 es otro producto Henshel de 1932 y también fabricado a medida para Turquía. Estos motores fueron diseñados utilizando diseños de componentes de las locomotoras alemanas estándar de la época, por ejemplo ejemplo del P8 y el G8. De hecho, el primer lote se parece a un "P8 estirado" -hay una fotografía de ésta máquina en esta serie.
Workers' departure at Ereğli town beside its Black Sea harbour sees one of a pair of similar-likeness BRG8/2 employed on the line 45001 06.45 service to the coal mines at Armutçuk.
The Black Sea minerals line was unconnected to the national network, later becoming abandoned with eventual disposal of the pair of locos 45001/17 stationed there.
The railway ran from a large mine in Armuçuk to the port town of Karadeniz Ereğlı and the large Erdemir steel mill but passenger services also operated to small villages along the line, some as heavy 'mixed' trains.
The abandoned town alignments have become laid out as attractive boulevards.
