TCX's latest A321 Bound for Sharm El Sheikh

Turkish railways mototren on its way to Zonguldak meets the Black Sea Coastline near Hisaronü, 1977.

German manufacturers MAN, Düwag and Esslingen delivered 16 Diesel Motor Units between december 1951 and december 1952 to the Turkish Railways which were classified Mototren class 5300 (MT 5300). MAN designed and supplied the mechanical parts for all units. They are similar to German Railways Class VT 08.5.

Based on the Prussian G8/2 design 45017 is Tublize (Belgium) 2075/28, the first of eight with the majority coming from Nohab.

Class members 45001/17 worked out the remaining line operations during the year, their arrival at the isolated mineral line being it is thought by sea.

DE24 362 stands at Karabük with train 21818 the "Karaelmas Ekspresi" the 08.10 Ankara to Zonguldak. From its title as a named train it sounds like the premier fast service on this line from the capital to the towns on the Black Sea coast but in reality it was the only train of the day covering the route in its entirety. The section between the junction at Irmak on the mainline from Ankara heading east to Sivas and here at Karabük had just one train a day each way. The route crosses the sparsely populated Keltepe Dağlari Mountains and slow moving freights require banking assistance on this steeply graded route. There were a handful of short passenger workings along the coastal section from Zonguldak to Gökçebey or through to here at Karabük but otherwise the 293kms between Irmak and Karabük was primarily for freight.

In 1982 the Turkish Railways (TCDD) received 15 former Deutsche Bundesbahn V100 diesel hydraulic locos.

On 31 March 1984 I saw two in use on suburban trains in the Izmir era where they had recently replaced 70 year old German steam locomotives.

Former Danish EA 86.006 with former British 85.005 'Lady of the Lake' and former British 87.023 'Velocity' out of sight on the rear of MDTV 45094 from Turkey to Dimitrovgrad (and onwards into Europe). One day later, the train was seen travelling through Hungary!

The train had arrived from Turkey behind 87023 and was waiting for arrival of the other two machines to assist over the gradients between Septemvri and Sofia. It was rather a shame it was not two British machines at the head of the train but the more powerful 'EA' was needed.

DE22 013 after arriving at Izmir Basmane on the 06.15 from Usak. Clearly visible is the work on the platform in preparation for a canopy to be installed, now that TCDD has decided to concentrate its passenger services on Basmane rather than Alsancak station.

Shortly after DE36 012 had arrived on its freight, classmate DE36 018 turned up (with DE24 408 and DE33 010) on another freight heading the same way. The DE36 class of loco in Turkey is a General Electric Powerhaul design built under licence by TÜLOMSAŞ in Eskisehir, and is rated at 3,690HP.
