Playing with my new DIY striplight, used with a single speedlight. I'm really happy with the light it puts out. This image had very little editing done to it, other than turning it monochrome and playing with the contrast a bit. The box was quite close to my face here, about 15-20 inches away.

So I am designing some ad material for this show I help produce as a fundraiser. This I shot in hopes of creating a poster from it, but I have yet to produce any ideas that I like when adding text.....

Let me know what you think.

4 light setup!

Two Diy Striplights for the rim on 1/4 power.

One snoot for the background at 1/32 and 1 Softbox at 45/45 degree with 1/2 power.

All Flashes are Youngnou 560.

Wow, finally I had the chance to shoot with a professional dancer. Thanks, Minka!

STROBIST

Beautydish with grid from the left, striplight with grid from the right. Plus continuous light from left and right (cheap construction site lamps, 2x 1000 W).

EXIF

5d3 on tripod, f/20, 3.7 seconds, ISO 100, 24-70 on 27 mm.

DETAILS

We triggered the cam on bulb mode and the flashes by hand , via a hand-hold RF trigger. The flashes were equipped with full CTO gels. To prevent light spill from the continuous lights we used large cardboard as flags to block the light.

Heavy rain had just stopped which made this photo all the more interesting, it would not be the same without the reflections.

This shot shows how good the Nikon D800 is, I just set the ISO to 2000 and left the camera to work out the rest.

Trying out the technique of Rim Lighting . I lost detail down near the shoe but I think this is because the striplights are on stands so only start above ankle level

Extensive layers and luminances within the Photoshop file on the new work. Not copying anyone in particular, but loving saturated and unsaturated colors, textures, refined skin and an almost 'painterly' approach to the image.

I got a 150x25cm striplight as a birthday present - and this bottle Lagavulin was the first setup i used it for...

One of the first test shots from a session with a Swedish model. The client wanted to show their hair styling products and tools, so I set up for a very white and soft light with light shadows.

Lighting info

Main light from a Profoto ComPact 600R fitted with a Softlight Reflector camera left angled down towards the model's face. Below flash and in front of camera is a Photoflex LitePanel (white) to create some fill. On both sides of the model I placed large paper walls to reflect some light. Behind model there are 2 Profoto ComPacts in Striplight softboxes (one with grid, one without) for lighting the background and act as both rimlight and hairlight.

Some postprocessing in Lightroom, but nothing more than that yet.

My very first Pro lighting gear kit! Before, I was using a creative hodge-podge of DIY lights from Home Depot and $2 foam core borders from a craft store, which, I must say, worked remarkably well for all the videos and shoots I've done in the past 3 years. But, I had to leave them all in Vancouver, so I'm starting fresh!

At this point, I'm looking for reliability and pro gear that doesn't topple over and stab me or models in the eye.. OW! They don't seem to like that very much :P

I wanted to get a continuous lighting kit that I could use primarily for my video work, (promo videos & commercials), but also for stills (portrait and fashion).

The Wescott 3-Light Window Light Kit Plus is going to give me gorgeous daylight balanced light that looks like window light and enough play that I can experiment with a vast array of lighting set-ups.

The kit comes with 2 TD5 Spiderlites that can take up to 5 lamps (continuous or strobes), and a TD3 Spiderlite that can take up to 3 lamps. Plus, stands, softboxes and a boom arm that I can hardly lift. Heavy sucker!

The two 24" x 32" Softboxes & Strip bank will be awesome for video and I can easily throw a Speedlight in there for outdoor photography.

I'm really excited to experiment with all this gear. I'm pretty much a n00b when it comes to continuous lighting, so I'll share any tips and tricks I find with you =)

This is Egill "Gillzenegger" Einarsson as The Punisher from the Marvel comics. As usual, the makeup/bodypaint is done by Henný and Eva Hrönn. Just wanted to add that The Punisher has been one of my favorite characters from the comics, a very dark character, wich is why I chose to light this shot the way I did. Probably my favorite studio/black backround shot in this series so far.

I used 6 lights for this one, two striplight softboxes on both his sides, two honeycomb lights aimed at shoulder height behind him, one honeycomb light on the backround and an octobox from the front for very very slight fill lighting.

I hate these flaming curtains. they're not the color of your hair

I hate these striplights. they're not so undoing as your stare

I hate the buttons on your shirt when all I wanna do is tear

I hate this bloody big bed of mine when you're not here

Well, I finally found someone to turn me upside down

And nail my feet up where my head should be

If they had a 'King of Fools', then I could wear that crown

And you can all die laughing because I'll wear it proudly

Well, you seem to be shivering, dear, and the room is awfully warm

In the white and scarlet billows that subside beyond the storm

You have this expression dear, no words could take its place

And I wear it like a badge that you put all over my face

Well, I finally found someone to turn me upside down

And nail my feet up where my head should be

If they had a 'King of Fools', then I could wear that crown

And you can all die laughing because I'll wear it proudly

I'll wear it proudly through the dives and the dancehalls

If you'll wear it proudly through the snakepits and catcalls

Like a fifteen-year old kid wears a vampire kiss

If you don't know what is wrong with me

Then you don't know what you've missed

We are arms and legs wrapped 'round more than my memory tonight

When the bell rang out and the air outside turned blue from fright

But in shameless moments, you made more of me than just a mess

And a handful of eagerness says, "What do you suggest?"

Well, I finally found someone to turn me upside down

And nail my feet up where my head should be

If they had a 'King of Fools', then I could wear that crown

And you can all die laughing because I'll wear it proudly

The background is a print on 9 sheets of A2 paper, glued together. The apple tree is lit by a feathered striplight and an SB800. This is gelled green and pink, which when it was corrected, made the background colours more dramatic.
