After a few weeks of creative deprivation caused by a deep cut and a new situation in my life I try to catch up with my work and slowly return to normal life...

Last weekend Teymur Madjderey aka www.icedsoul.de/ was in Town for a visit. We went to the lightGIANTS Studio for some shots.

We had a lot of fun and this is one shot out of the batch.

You can find a before and after comparison at my site.

Or have a look at the large version on black!

WOW... you guys ROCK! Thank you all for FrontPage! :-)

and for making this shot #4.

Post production LR4 & Photoshop CS6

On a walk around Farnborough Business Park I was looking for alternative views of the airship hangar. I found this reflection in the office building across the road to be quite appealling. I had to choose th angle carefully to ensure that I wasn't part of the shot so that meant that I had to modify the perspective in Photoshop. I also removed some distracting striplights inside the building

I had set off with the intention of going to the London Eye. The sky was pretty flat so decided to go to South Kensington instead. This was the tunnel that I attempted to photograph on Sunday.

#3 | LOST IN DRUGS

The perfectly reflective silhouette of the syringe literally blots out all our doubts and worries and makes us surrender to the clarity of intoxication. The smoke shows as a contrast the excessive toxicity of the drugs, which cannot be admitted.

Another one of Svala Jónsdóttir from this photoshoot. Like I said about that shot, I am far from a fan of smoking, I really hate it but I think it looks cool in photographs so that's that.

Thank you very much for explore! Have a peaceful time!

The title? Well, that scene reminded me of the old Dracula movies.... :-)

Light: Candles, striplight with grid from the right (we used only the modelling light).

Cheap LED flood lights provide a huge amount of light for they power they use.

Often the cheap ones come with no instructions or specifications so "you pays your money and takes your chance". Coupled with a diffuser or reflector they can be handy for the "black and white" photographer. The colour balance may be a bit harsh for colour work.

This shot was taken with a little 5 watt unit I bought to go outside the garage door; no reflector or diffuser just on the work bench for a quick test before getting up the ladder to install it.

Strobist Lighting 102 Assignment: Cooking.

I wanted to show some mystery and drama with this assignment.

I twisted and bent the fork to make it look expressive.

Lighting :

Canon 430EX with a DIY striplight and gobos at 1/4 power setting on the left of the camera. The fork was suspended about a foot from the background. The background was lit with a SB-28 with spot grid at 1/16 power opposite the camera. A SB-24 with spot grid at 1/8 power was supposed to be an accent light opposite the camera but it didn't fire in this shot. I liked the effect better than when it did.

A Harsh Critic

I had an enjoyable photo session earlier today with my youngest daughter, Rebecca.

Over the years, I've taken hundreds of photographs of her as she's grown. She has even graciously modelled for me during portrait workshops I've run. Yet, despite all the images I've captured, she has never liked a single one.

Today felt like a breakthrough. I photographed Rebecca and her partner using four Profoto lights: an octagon overhead softbox, two grided strip lights on either side, a background light, and a light golden reflector in front to soften any shadows.

At the end of the session, Rebecca looked through all the images I had using a CamRanger 2 sent to my iPad for easier viewing and said, … 'I actually really like some of these.' She went on to say that she loved the lighting and described it as 'insane.' I was astonished this had never happened before. A red-letter day indeed!!

So excitedly, I sat down to process the first image and sent the first one over to her with bated breath, awaiting approval, asking, 'Do you like this one?'

Her response? 'No, not really.' 😔

Ah well… back to the drawing board! 😊

When I originaly concieved of this shoot, I was only going to use Alan. Space and time seemed to limit this especially on this shoot because of the setup (SEE HERE). Usually I finish rehersals at 6 so things can only begin then. However we had a lucky friday and finished by 2 allowing me to bring in julia at the last minute. And I was glad too, because it worked out really well.

This is Svala Jónsdóttir, the same model as from this shoot. My wife Henný did the makeup. All three of us didn´t feel like we were finished with the makeup and the look we did in that other shoot so we got together a couple of weeks later and did similar makeup and hair and took some more shots in the studio. I especially like her expression/gaze in this one.

Two striplight softboxes aimed at her from behind, one big softbox behind me and a honeycomb with a grid pointed at the backround.

Oh and for the record, I am far from a fan of smoking, I really hate it but I think it looks cool in photographs so that's that.

#3 MEMENTO MORI | gedenke des Todes

Fotoausstellung 2022 - Thema: Nichtigkeit

From the Middle Ages to the present day, vanitas still lifes link vanity and transience with our lives. In this context, the arranged objects play a grave symbolic role.

With my modern interpretation of the vanitas still life, I would like to invite the viewer to an active mental participation and to stimulate a self-reflection on today's abundance.

The unifying element of the series is one modern object each as well as the stylistic device of levitation photography (floating objects).

Sadly I’ve not been around much on Flickr over the past few months or taken many photographs due mainly to not being very well (nothing serious thankfully) and real life getting in the way as it is wont to do.

This leaves me with a bit of a challenge in completing my 100x project by the end of the year As it is only three-quarters of the way through. So I thought I would rummage through this year’s images and have a go at preparing some that I’ve not yet published. There are quite a few: a bit of a mixed lot.

Here are the first six that I processed yesterday, all rather colourful and weird (I should have called my project ‘Wild and Wacky’ instead of the rather pretentious ‘Creative Photography’!).

Here are some brief notes:

#74 Transcendence - This was taken in the bedroom of a hotel we stayed in at the beginning of the year. The headboard had a blue and purple striplight inbuilt (just shows what dodgy hotels we use). It’s a two-image in-camera multiple exposure using Darken blend. The ICMs use diagonal movements.

#75 Fatal Attraction - An in-camera multiple exposure of three ICMs using Darken blend. It’s of a country lane with dark hedges on either side, using one twist and two zoom movements.

#76 Migraine - This is another product of the long-running Christmas Tree Light ICMs project taken last January, taken just walking towards the tree wiggling the camera. It wasn’t the best result (an understatement!) but I wanted to try postprocessing it with Topaz Studio 2. This one was processed principally using the Radiance filter with some additional mucking about in Affinity. I’ll post this to Sliders Sunday today.

#76 Diamond Light - Another three-image in-camera multiple exposure using Darken blend. There were three ICM movements - the diagonals and a vertical. It’s of a backlit wooden glasses wall cabinet in my dining room; you can see some glasses on the right if you look carefully…

#77 Dancing Angels - This is a straightforward ICM using a down-and-around movement during the exposure. It’s of the tree lights in the village church taken on a January afternoon. You can see some yellow flowers in a vase on the windowsill behind: I couldn’t really avoid the flowers in the shot but it was an interesting result nonetheless.

#78 Light Speed - In the same church, this two-image in-camera multiple exposure using Darken blend (I think), both were zoom ICMs, post-pickled for colour .

Thanks for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy some of the images. Happy Sunday :)

LIGHT

One horizontal striplight with a speedlight inside from above (obviously I cloned that out). Three speedlights in the lighttable. Forth speedlight, also bare, from the right side as kicker.

EXIF

5d3, EF 24-70 II f/2.8 at f/6.3 and at 70 mm, 1/50 second, ISO 100, RAW, WB on flash.

NOTES

The smoke comes from a little smoke tablet (www.pyroland.de).

The 1/50 does not make any sense (but does not hurt either). We tried to add a continuos light as kicker --- and I wanted to include that, and I forgot to change back to 1/160 sec. That's why. :-)
