Long striplight left. That's all !

Da musste ich doch heute unbedingt mal meine selbstgebasteltes Mini-Striplight ausprobieren.

Man nehme:

- Papp-Versandrolle, möglichst groß.

- Alufolie

- Butterbrotpapier

Strobist Info: One single striplight behind and above the light bulb. Blue Gel covering the middle of the striplight. The lightbulb is placed on a glassplate, under the glass a white reflector that brings the light up to the bulb. In front of the lens I placed a smaller pane were I added a small layoer of vaseline (always from top down) to create the stripes from left to right

Macro Mondays. Childhood memories theme. Strobist Sundays strip light theme. I used to play with these for hours on end. See the setup for strobist info.

WARNING

Keep in mind, that there is always a risk of a powder explosion with setups like this one. Make sure, that there is no open flame, cigarette or spark near the setup.

Finally had some time to hunt for the perfect background for this Seattle Band. I knew it was going to be at night and downtown but that was all I knew. There's nothing quite like Pioneer square at night on a weekend. Suffice it to say, I only had one earpiece in while listening to music and searching for our background. Each person was lit with a boomed beauty dish overhead with an Einstein 640. Rim lights provided by gridded striplights on either side and slightly behind with alienbees b800's. Fill was accomplished with a large octabox just behind me with an Interfit EXD400. Adjustments to shadows made in Lightroom and composite put together with 28 different layers in Photoshop. Members photographed in West Seattle Studio.

Last weekend I convinced my wife to take pictures of her. It is the first time I experimented with low key pictures. For a real low key it seems there is to much light but I and she like it.

All pictures done in the living room. :-)

Strobist info: Selfmade striplights camera left and camera right. The striplight behind her was equipped with ohne YN560III @ 24mm and 1/8 (down to 1/16) power. The keylight was equipped with an YN560III @ 24mm and 1/4 power. All speedlights triggered with the 560-TX.

Post processing: I tried a new workflow for beauty retouching. This is my first trial and I try to improve it. I want to get rid of the frequency seperation. So in this picture I just used really decent the healing brush and heavy D&B. After that some color corrections and a curve to improve the overall look. Nothing else done (no blurred skin :-D ).

PS: I'm really proud of my wife. She has always to model for me and she get never bored! Love you!

Isn't that a great and interesting face?

Lit with an Elinchrom studio strobe in a rectangular Softbox (60x90) and an Elinchrom strobe in a small striplight as kicker.

my major issues with strobes is that they give a pretty matte look to a non metallic car.

thats why i need to learn how to light a car with a fluoro.

anyways, nevermind the location and composition. this is just a testshot to learn.

although the wheels and headlights are lit with vivitar 285hv's @ 1/2.

cheers!

The major mod here is the colour and the hacked umbrella mount to make it soooo much more convenient .

The top of the umbrella mount was removed and a barrel shaped piece of plastic cut away. This allowed me to put two bolts through to mount to the tube. I don't think this is a perfect solution, but it works for now.

Studio shoot with Jana :) Lighting: Octabox from above on boom stand, 2 striplights left and right behind model.

Background added in photoshop cc.

This is María Ólafsdóttir. We took this shot a week before she is competing in Model Fitness, or on the 11th of April so obviously she is in great shape, she has been training for months for the competition. It was shot for DPChallenge with the theme "Stock photos: Fitness". I must be getting dyslexic though cause I didn´t really notice the "Stock photos" part, I rather shot an fitness image that could possibly be on the cover of a magazine, or something like that. She wound up in 6th place in her category, very good considering it was her first time competing.

Lit with 4 lights. Two bowens lights with striplight softboxes slightly behind her on both sides of her. One semi large softbox behind me for fill lighting and since I just bought a Profoto light the day before, I hung it up in a boom, behind her as you can see. Gotta love Profoto, great for outdoor use :)

Oh an the title is a reference to one of my all time favorite movies, Zoolander :)

Something a little different today, a quick howto make a small striplight attachment for a flash.

The only materials needed are a Pringles tube and a sheet of white paper. Tools are pretty minimal too, a sharp craft knife being the most important, plus a marker pen and a needle/pin will also be helpful.

I hope the pics do most of the explaining for me, but a few notes to help out, linked to the individual images.

1. Not really needed, but I find it easier to mark out the opening first. Start with a centreline running the length of the tube. I then use a strip of paper wrapped around the tube to mark the horizontal cut lines and measure where the vertical cuts will go.

The opening here is 5inches/125mm around the tube, by 6inches/150mm top to bottom.

2. Note how the opening is offset toward the bottom of the container, the bottom edge is just 1/2"/12mm from the base. The reason for not going right to the bottom, is to hold the paper difusser later.

To cut out the opening, I like to push a needle or pin through where each of the 4 corners will be. Then I just cut between the corners. It is easier to cut around the tube first, then the verticals along the tube after. It doesnt tend to compress so much working that way.

3. Easiest step of all now :) Take a sheet of white paper out of your printer, cut the length so it is about 1/2"inch/12mm shorter than the tube, roll it up and slide inside. Once inside the tube it will automatically try to open, pressing itself up against the inside of the tube.

4. Job done, all thats needed now is to insert the flash and away you go.

I dont want to go into too much depth about fitting the flash as there are so many it would be impossible to cover them all.

For those with small heads like the Yonguo shown, Nikon SB's and some Vivitars, you might find the fitment shown in the first comment below useful.

For those flashes that have larger zoom heads, you will probably find they are a tight fit in the tube itself, I know my old Canon will only just fit inside.

Well thats about all there is to it, hopefully it will be use to some.

I have included a few test shots taken with one of these in the second comment below to give some idea of the effect it gives.

Nein meine Freunde, das ist nicht was ihr glaubt! Das ist nur eine kleine, ca. 20 cm große Statue, die mir heute beim Austesten von ein paar Lichtsetups behilflich war.

I tried a few lighting setups and this little figurine was my model.

Strobist Info:

A bare Canon Speedlite 430 EX II at 3 o'clock aiming in direction 7 o'clock and a bare Yongnuo Speedlite YN-565 EX II at about 10 o'clock aiming in direction 2 o'clock. Triggerd with 2 Yongnuo YN-622C and a Yongnuo YN-622C-TX.

By the way: in my system the figurine is in the center of the clock and the camera is 6 o'clock. Since the figurine is only about 20 cm high, the bare speedlites are very much like a striplight in a more professional studio.

Another shot I entered at a challenge over at www.dpchallenge.com, the theme was "X marks the spot". When this challenge came along I thought it was a good opportunity to see if I could do something cool again in that theme that I started two years ago, called "Symbols" and I like this shot.

The model is Valdís and the bodypaint/makeup is by Eva Hrönn. Lit with 3 lights and a silver reflector, two striplight softboxes behind her on both sides and one medium sized softbox over my head, the silver reflector was between us, pointed upwards.
